I started playing guitar when I was 13yrs old and spent the 60's playing lead guitar in a group in the UK, France and Germany. I then teamed up as a Duo with my wife for the next 25yrs.

I have recently purchased an Ibanez Prestige 2550mz-GW which came with the IBZ pups fitted as standard. In conjunction with good advice from members of this forum and this review which is the same guitar as mine (except the colour)
http://en.audiofanzine.com/stc-shaped-guit.../reviews/#pages I decided to replace the IBZ's with a White Evolution set; DP158FSP DP159FSP and ISCV2BKUK-Middle pickup. First of all the guitar is great to play, has a fretboard and action to die for and fitted with the zero point trem system which I think is fairly new. The Evo's are substantually more powerfull thats for sure than the IBZ and they do sound smoother as the IBZ's sometimes sounded a little grainy and my tech considered they were smaller wound than the Evolutions. The single coil middle pickup I don't rate at all, it sounds less powerfull and has no character. If anyone were to go ahead I would just go for the two humbuckers and leave your single coil IBZ and save your money. I am only a bedroom player now but if you were to use the Evo's with a big amp etc, etc I'm sure your sound would benefit substantially. On my small Zoom G2 with a small line 6 amp I have had to turn down the gain on most of my settings to accomodate the extra power in these pickups. I have noticed on youtube some have put the "Steve specials" in the bridge and the "Air Norton or the PAF" in the neck. However, I have a hand made guitar about 12 years old built by a local luthier with good quality Humbuckers also wound by hand and the IBZ's were marginally more powerful but not as smooth. Pickups are very subjective I suppose but I can say I am well pleased with the Evo's and I finally finished up by paying £950'ish all-together. The guitar cost £700 (new JAKE'S GUITARS ebay UK) and the set of pickups (white more expensive than the black) were £220 with £20 fitted. Hope this helps anyone interested in a replacement. I am considering making my first video, but what happens if you make a mistake half way through. Is it a matter of just "getting it right" or can it be edited with post-editing with cut-ins later if you have decent software. I was intending to go in to the camera through the aux jack socket and then into the computer, BUT even though I've played it many times correctly I always seem to cock-up somewhere when the comera is running.

I have just bought an Ibanez Prestige rg2550mz-GW, its a lovely guitar and the fretboard and Action is to die for but I am having trouble as my sleeves (clothing) keeps getting caught at the back where the fine tuners are located and even though I've got it to its lowest point its driving me up the wall when I go for the arm or a right hand hammer (I know it sounds frivolous but I'm at the point of selling it).
The trem system is the Edge Zero type (newish type) accompanied at the back by the Zero Point system. Can anyone tell me if the "Edge Pro" will fit into this system as it may be my answer. ( Please don't suggest rolling my sleeves up) Regards Tony

Hi everyone,
I am intending to buy an Ibanez RG 2570 MZ guitar with the new trem system (Zero Point) and it has IBZ pickups on it, however I have read a couple of recommendations to perhaps upgrade the pickups so I was thinking in terms of the Evolution DP 158 and 159 which are on the 7v-wh Steve Vai and which I like the sound of. I have just contacted 'thoman' and they have told me they are 'F- Spaced' I did'nt know what this meant and asked them to clarify and they said, these pickups have spacings other than a normal humbucker but are the same dimensions.... so presumably the strings will not be in line with the pole pieces. Is this correct? Can some one enlighten me on this I AM CONFUSED. Regards Tony

Hi Muris,
This is going to be heavy going but here goes; I don't like to reveal my age ( 64yrs) but I have been playing guitar since I was 13yrs and they have been normally Strat type guitars. I grew up in the Uk in the late 50's with Elvis, Ricky Nelson etc etc and finished up with a Strat, Vox Ac 30 and Watkins Copycat doing gigs for 30yrs and playing a lot of Hank Marvin and Shadows stuff where there is a big world following in my age group. Anyway not wanting to bore you (this is tricky to explain) but due to all that Strat playing I have always avoided floyd Rose Trem systems because the little tuning pegs have always got in the way catching my sleeve etc and I've always been uncomfortable with them for that reason and played with my right hand coming in over the bridge at a slight angle but more or less straight. If you remember I placed a thread about GEAR " Ibanez Jem 555 or 7v" a few days ago and I took on the comments that were made. I am aware you play with Floyd Rose type trems and decided to scrutinise your 'right hand technique' on your lessons. I noticed that your right hand emerges more from the top of the guitar rather than lower down coming accross the bridge and when you do a " speed of light run" across the strings your wrist seems to flow downwards in a kind of ark. Giong back to the gear thing first I tried a Steve Vai signature Jem v-wh and its a nice guitar no doubt but I also went with the advice and tried a new Ibanez prestige with the new zero point floyd rose trem systems. They both sounded pretty much the same actually but the Jem cost £1100 more. Realisticly I very much like the Prestige guitar anyway and will probably buy it tomorrow £900; so I went back today and played it attempting one of your " speed of light runs" with your technique rather than my Strat position. Although I found it strange I avoided getting my cuff fast but my alternate picking felt somewhat smoother because my plectrum was at a downward angle skimming across the strings in an ark. The bottom line is.... Will it be wrong to give it a go and adjust my right hand technique or am I going to confuse myself. Best regards Tony |
