I Find Your Lack Of Explorer Disturbing!

Anyone noticed that we have almost no Explorer shape players on GMC (aside from Aleksander Sukovic) ?

I had to do something against it, sold my Ibanez RG 550 to a friend and got myself this baby:
(warning, crappy cell-phone pic from the rehearsal room)

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=19081

It's a 2001 Gibson Gothic Explorer which I upgraded with Bareknuckle Miracle Man Humbuckers. I bought it used in a decent condition for a fair price. I will be gigging and rehearsing with this guitar anyways so no need for a perfect finish.

It's s really fat, warm and mighty sounding guitar (I use it in D Standard and Drop C most of the time).

Hey GMC,

Just wondering if anyone else has heard about this new supergroup?

They apparently played the Metro in Chicago last night, but it is proving hard to get a listen to these guys. "These guys" being Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and some guy named John Paul Jones from this little group that was big back in the 70's.... you probably never heard of them... I think they were called Led Zeppelin or something I'm really anxious to have a listen, I mean it's Grohl, Homme and John Paul Jones!!! Talk about some amazing musicianship. I am waiting with bated breath to hear something by them. There is some stuff on youtube but it's horrible quality. Apparently an album is due in October.

rok

Dreamy Ballad Odd Time Collaboration, Try It!

Hello guys and girls! This is my first and fresh collab for GMC! This is way fun,

I got inspired by watching a starry night (who hasn't been there?) and recorded a backing track on 5/8. I went for a very soothing, relaxed, dark vibe. I think it has some fusion in it as well,

For the first part, the chords pretty much are a prolongation of Em7 with added C and F#.

Second part are: Am7 – G – D7

Back to first part, and for the last part the chords are:
Em9 – D/E – G/E – Bm7 - D – Em7 (not exactly sure though)

Some suggested scales are Em, G, Bm but really just follow your ears and don’t over analyse the note names,
if you want don’t even analyse them at all,

I think it’s a good idea to go for melodic ideas over this musical idea. But just go for whatever you feel like.
If you feel like shredding it, please do!

Feel free to take risks, 1000 points to the riskiest

Tempo: 148bpm

Deadline: November 29th/2009

Participants signed up so far:

1. jafomatic

2.
Metal Dorian Collab

Here's the final mix and comments for metal dorian collaboration!

There weren't a lot of participants involved, but Dexxter and Jafo really did their best, and I think it sounds awesome. Each put it's own distinct style and flavor into the track, and I'm very pleased on the result!

Comments:

Dexxter:

Rhythm: great figures, not one note off in the whole take and all played with perfect timing, probably due to the fact that you had guitar pro. Really well done for this one. I like the intro, and all the rhythmical phrases in both parts, but I think somewhere after the start of the second part you had some longer notes that kinda outbalanced the rhythmical structure a bit.
Phrasing: Great sense for the phrases, specially in the first part of the take, where melodies interact with each other in a very cool way using some fast passages. In that second part there is again that problematic part that is lacking a bit of a structure and connection with the rest of the solo. My general impression regarding your phrasing on this one was that all the phrases was nicely fitted and perfectly played, but they lack some degree connection so they don't sound phrase-after-phrase like. However, by listening to your take, I definitely didn't get the impression that you were playing lick after lick, the connection is there, I just feel the connection could be a bit stronger.
Technique: You displayed a variety of techniques here, and all of them were perfectly used to execute the notes flawlessly. There are only 1 or 2 week notes in the whole take, and the only thing I would like to hear more is the use of a wider more aggressive vibrato more often.
Sound: Great sound that cuts well, and doesn't suffer from any problems regarding buzzing. The amount of overdrive is just about enough, and space is great. Nothing to add here, very good.

Jafomatic:

Rhythm: Rhythmical structure has tighter connections between the phrases that it may appear at first glance. All the notes were carefully played, with minor timing problems in the beginning section of the second part. The dynamic build up was not executed effectively, and because of this the solo sounded flat. The reason for this is the use of too many similar rhythmical phrases in both takes. Despite of this, the second part indeed had somewhat faster sequences which can be considered a nice separation and build up from the first one. If it had some crucial elements implemented, like defining the transition between the parts better, and defining those faster passages towards the end to a bigger extent so they reach a proper climax, I think it would sound even better.
Phrasing: The phrasing used was excellent, with a very noticeable and straightforward structure of 4 big phrases in each section and more than cool overdubs. All 4 phrases in the first section were really good, and you found a way to balance them and develop them as the backing progressed. In the second part, the notes and the theme start to loose definition towards the end of the solo. All this decreases the effectiveness of the solo a lot, because the listener usually remembers the last part of the solo. Next time, I advise if you do have problems finishing up the last phrases, stop, rest, and come back the next day with a fresh idea in mind. The overdub the guitars carefully and recreate the end part so that really fuses with the solo, but also it wraps up the solo nicely.
Technique: Everything was played very good, with strong accent given on palm muting technique. The thing that I believe lack here is a good controlled vibrato, and some definition in those last phrases, so all the notes come out equally well. Everything else was really nice.
Sound: Overall tone was good. I listened both of your posts, and it sounded more defined to me while listening only to the soloed guitar track. This leads me to conclusion that amount of space used and relative lack of mids made guitar track a bit lost in the mix. Not too much, but I believe it could have better definition to some extent. I believe focusing guitars into 500-1500Hz region and cutting out other places (specially the low end) would make it a bit more tighter and mids-hi mids would be smoothed out and your palm muting and notes would get that pleasant "chunk" pronounced even more to let the notes jump out in the mix. Cutting down the space just a bit would help as well.

Thanks a lot guys for participating in this one!

Lukather Style Collaboration

Hello friends! This is the final mix and comments thread for the Steve Lukather Style Collaboration. Here we give the results of the collaboration. In general, the work has been very good. Do not know if I've been lucky or if most GMC members are good students and guitarists! When working with the recordings, I recommend you do the mixdown with Sound Forge. It is an interesting program, and also easy to use where you may remove noise and normalize volumes. If any of you work with frutty Loops, I can give them some useful files with very interesting configurations.
I must admit that you have been the best group of students.
Also want to thank you for having done her homework and participating in this collaboration. Now, download the file and listen to the work friends. Enjoy it.

These are the 11 participants:

Marek Rojewski - kaznie_NL - Jafomatic - NoSkill - Sollesnes - Dexxter - Staffy - Rated htr – Mhskeide – Nimrandir – TheKeplerConjecture .

Comments:

Marek Rojewski: (0:03 – 01:04)
Looking for the sound, you pay attention to the search of the tone. I would take a bit of reverb and I proportion more delay, anyway, is a matter of personal taste. Apply a good vibrato suggested in rhythmic phrases beginning with melodies. The rhythmic figures seem to exercise, I would suggest more research figures, play with the spontaneity. In the chorus you play octaves with interesting rhythmic, very original. In general, good work Marek! You're creative when it comes to make the solos.

Kaznie: (01:09 – 02:10)
You're also search the sounds, sounds-like Lukather (gain with chorus) I like it. You create melodies in the beginning, is a good proposal. Duplicate guitars with interesting arguments. In the chorus provides a bluesy color. Then execute difficult moves at the right time. Well done! You must work in the neatness of it. Perform in the style of Steve. Very good finish with a nice job of two guitars. You work in the creation of the solos. You have good vibrato and the implementation of bending are good. Kazni Good job!

Jafomatic: (02:17 – 03:16)
Very Good sound! Use less gain at the beginning and do it more powerful from the chorus. Good setup delay. The arguments are very good, the notes from the beginning has a nice rhythm. Interestingly, the contrast is like 2 guitars. I appreciate a more melodic sound from the chorus. Well done!.

NoSkill: (03:23 – 04:25)
NoSkill, my friend. I found a note that is not on the scale. I recommend that you verify. From the bluesy chorus apply a color (I like!). You give importance to sound, and those looking for close to a great tone. That's part of the maturation of the guitarist. I would change to less reverb and a longer delay so that it's so confusing. You must realize that what I say is a matter of taste. Make good straight and have good control of vibrato. Resolving the problem of the correct scale (which is just a note!), you did a good job. Well done.

Sollesnes: (04:29 – 05:34)
Good proposal in the beginning about melodies and rhythm. You made a good sound. You make some nice fast phrasing, very original. The change in the chorus sound changing positively the song (chorus tone as usage varies sometimes Lukather). In the chorus perform an ascending scale very difficult! You have very good typing and interesting musical ideas. The finish is very good too, with melody harmonization with other guitar. With your track, I had to fix the volume with the sound forge. Very good job.

Dexxter: (05:35 – 06:39)
Looking rhythmic phrases, something very important in a student. Well done. I provide more delay and reverb (a matter of taste). Make good bending and have a good vibrato. Very good finish and good Lick rockers (the style that used in some cases, Steve). Looking melody on the chorus, another plus. Good work mate.

Staffy: (06:40 – 07:44)
Staffy Very good job! You're an experienced guitarist. Dominates the sound of blues and also run some fast movements. You have a good control of vibrato and bending as any blues guitarist (that's why I insist to study the blues as a basic tool of the application of taste when you run a good one.). You have a good sound. You make beautiful melodies in the chorus and make a nice phrase up coming to the end.

Rated htr: (07:46 – 08:49)
Nice Sound Rated. Search melody’s in the beginning, important for a guitarist who moves forward in its level. The work you do in the chorus is interesting, original, with phrases legatos. When you return to the music of the verse, you realize interesting arguments differentiating of others. Well done. The tapping of the end is complicated. It's an interesting work. Well done.

TheKeplerConjecture: (08:54 – 09:56)
Run good arguments rhythmic with melodies and sometimes some nice licks. Your bending is good, it would delay and reverb for a longer sound. In the instrumental styles, is widely used implementation of delay and reverb, when the guitar comes to the first place. Nearing in the end of song, I realize that your arguments rhythmic and melodies are similar throughout the song. I suggest you investigate that. Play with the shift to the blues scale, or just do other things after the chorus. Good job!

Dear fellow GMC-ers,

Today, I have a question. I've been trying to play "Dear God" by Avenged Sevenfold.
Already got the intro down, seems like it is in Em (please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm rather a newbie to learning songs by ear). Anyway, the tone used for the lead guitar is very nice, but I have not idea how he gets it.
I've got a Kustom Arrow 16 amp, and a Silvertone SIK1 guitar. It's probably not possible to really get the tone like it is in the song, but I'd like to come as close to it as possible anyway.

Here's the song :

Hoping for some helpful replies, and thanks in advance!

Mtp November Thread - Kaznie

Hey Kaz, here's your new fresh thread for November. The idea now is to upgrade the scheduling of MTP Program, and change the pace of our work a bit.

Here are this months' new things, that were presented on forum as well:

* Weekly assignment: The student has one week to complete the assignment, and must then provide audio or video of how progress is going

* Monthly REC take: After one month of mtp, the student must submit a REC take. (This take doesn't necessarily have to pass)

* One new thread per month / per student: When the month is finished the instructor closes the mtp thread. The instructors' last post in the thread should be a summary of the student's four assignments and a link to the student's REC submission. If the student has failed to complete an assignment/progress report, or the monthly rec submission - he/she will not be able to continue with mtp (this rule applies for November as well!)

We know that these rules will mean a higher tempo for the students - and that some will probably not like it. However there are many people who want to use the mtp - and this is a way to make sure the most deserving ones get to be mentored. Also it is a way to ensure that students in fact make a lot of progress with the mtp program.

I will put one easier week November assignment for you tomorrow, so you have time to record it in the next 3 days.

Pick Noise

Ok. Here is the deal. I thought I would take the time to really listen to the superposition of pick noise as I played today. Trying different picks as I go. All the while adjusting the pick angle. My conclusions? Doesn't really matter what I do. The only discernible difference I can tell is if I pick closer to the bridge on the unwound strings. So close to the bridge that I have to be pretty much over the pole-pieces. Not really a position where one can easily use the palm for muting as it now finds itself behind the bridge proper hanging in free space. I have yet to test on other guitars but this holds true at least for the Ibanez S470 in its current setup. Anyone else have experience of this phenomenon? Or is there something else I can do to clean up my pick attack? Don't say pick angle. Tried it. Doesn't help.

[EDIT] >> Think I am gonna experiment with treble settings on amp and EQ tomorrow. The Triaxis Treble parameter acts as an extra gain stage and hence tends to be always up fairly high!

ok guys, the thread you`ve all been waiting for, and I`m very sorry that it has taken so long to get going, there has been some unforeseen circumstances that held us up a little, but now we have got over those, I`m hoping that we can kick this off in a big way!

First off, a little on the way that we think that we should work this.

After 3 months, we should have a bit of a review, I`m making a cut off point (of tonight) for all MTP applications for this first phase.

After three months we will restart, hopefully as new members join GMC and the forum they will also want a chance to be mentored by an Instructor.

It may be that we only have a few extra applications, so at this 3 month review point, I will discuss with the Instructors how they wish to proceed with their exsisting group etc.

anyway, enough already! heres how the Phase 1 groups will look!

Emir Hot (8 students)

Jesse, Jafomatic, NoSkill, Gus, Alexaiden93, Dexxter, Dark_Dude, ChrnoAM,

Lian Gerbino (5 Students)

Superize, Canis, johnvg, Zogerdr, Marek Rojewski,

Muris Varajic (2 students)

maharzan, playaxeman,

Pedja Simovic (17 Students)

TheKeplerConjecture, Edguy, Sondre, caelumamittendum, Coffeeman, mariogl91, Sami, Matt23, alejandro osorno, frederik, Deleted, Oxac, Paiva, Patrik Jezierski, wrk, marc_maiden, Duendezillo

Ivan Milenkovic (6 Students)

Sted, Staffy, Fusar, methodseeker, Kaznie_NL, shrednbuttah,

Bogdan Radovic (3 Students)

Purple Hayes, Mrblomme, Iluha

David Wallimann (4 Students)

Joruus, arctic1234, T-Gunn, Nimrandir

Ok, please please, if I have missed anyone out at all then let me know asap!

Over the next day or so MTP boards should be added to the individual Instructors sub boards (Emirs is on its way!)

here you`ll be able to communicate better with your mentor/instructor (a little like Pedja has done on his boards if you have missed it )

Its now over to the instructors, as each will have their own way of guiding you, good luck to you all over the next three months, and I hope that you all learn a great deal from the awesome Instructors we have here!

Tempo Subdivision/track Editing In Garageband

Hi,

I use garageband and I met the following problem. When I'm using a backing track, most of the time, it doesn't fit with garage band tempo and time subdivision.

For instance, the backing track tempo is "120.05", and after a few measures, there's a shift between garage band time subdivision and the backing track. Or, sometimes, the tempo match, but the back track first beat doesn't correspond exactly to the beginning of the song.

It's not a problem if I just want to record over the BT, but it becomes a problem if I want to do some track editing, or use the metronome over the track (it can be useful sometimes).

Anyway, I'm sure others have encountered this problem. Is there a way to solve this in GB, or in similar software?

Thanks,
Philippe

My Second Anniversary At Gmc :)

Another year at GMC! it went so fast it seems like yesterday

Where to start? So many awesome things went by... let's just say that soon after last year's wiki competition I became more & more involved with our wiki/knowledge base, and somehow I became Wiki Coordinator, and a Senior soon after (thanks Kris!).

Lots of projects were going on, and many more came after, the GMC Journal being one of my favourites. Hundreds of entries, a Portal Team being recruited in the process and our best efforts to support other GMC departments such as REC and competition re-issues

I keep practicing every day for a couple hours or so, and I'm having a great time playing GMC lessons and learning songs that I love since I was a teenager. Being able to play them (easy ones!) is my goal, and GMC lessons, boards & community are all I need to keep at it until I can play like Dave Murray (in 30 years time ).

I have gathered some cool gear this year too, mainly a nice tube amp & pedalboard. I love it, and I don't practice anymore with my POD because it can't compare to a real amp, though I still use POD to record. Oh! I also got me a nice webcam too, for REC purposes mainly, though I also record my takes of songs I like

Next year goals:

- Learn some new techniques with GMC lessons.
Tribute to Michael Jackson, Part 2
Link to Muris's original lesson is Here

PRS Custom 24, Artist
Line6, Pod X3 Live
Sonar,
Re-amped with Pod Farm's Mesa Tri-axis model.
Getting Muris's tone was quite a challenge. I came close by using EQ to add a peak at 1.6KHz, and then rolling off the highs sharply above 5KHz. Not sure if this is a common technique. For this solo, it seemed to work well, especially to filter out some of the fizz that seemes to be a part of this amp model. As for the performance here, it was tricky to get all the slides into and out of some of the notes. I especially like the "one bend" vibrato notes which add something really cool to this solo. They are hard to get right, but again, I think I got close with this take. I'll keep working on it.

(Great Britain specifically)
But before I even consider it, I need to get a lot more information about a few things:

I'm looking for somewhere peaceful to live, but not ridiculously overpriced. I imagine I'd need to be somewhat close to a city, as I am going to school to be a Computer Scientist (software engineering), so somewhere that might be notorious for jobs like that might be helpful.

I'm not picky about placement as far as weather, proximity to a coast, etc. I'd actually prefer a mainland area

Probably need somewhere that has some form of public transportation, as when I first arrive chances are I wont have a car

I cant really think of anything else at the moment....

I will be the only prospect moving, so dont need ridiculously large housing

Thanks in advance!
Practicing Too Much?

I would say on average I play guitar around 4-5 hours a day with a schedule, but sometimes in excess of 8-10 hours. Ive been playing for 7 years and about 2 of those seriously with a schedule. I also lift weights 2-3 times a week and also use the pc a fair bit.

Just over 2 weeks ago (I cant really remember when it started) I noticed a slight pain in my right wrist when I pushed myself up from a chair, I didnt think anything of it and carried on with everything. Then a few practice sessions later I really noticed a weird pain in my wrist so I had to stop playing. I'm sure many of u know that the thought of not playing guitar for a while is just a really hard one to accept, and I hadnt really considered it but after this practice session i realised my wrist wasnt right so had to stop. I havnt played for over a week now, no weights and no use of the mouse with my right hand. The pain in my wrist isnt painful, it just twinges a little discomfort if i put it into a certain position and lets me know its still there, but i know playing on it could just make it worse. Also putting weight on it, like doing a push up on the floor is pretty much impossible so it makes me wonder if its RSI or something else like injury from weights or RSI from using the mouse.. im seeing the doctor next week, but i guess the only thing hes going to say is rest it!

Anyone had any problems with this type of thing before? how long do u think i'll be out of action? its depressing me so much cos i cant play! just want it to heal

Triaxis Retubing Advice

Hi Muris,

I am a newbie to the GMC site and noticed by trolling through some older forum posts of yours that you have had experience in this department. I was wondering whether you could offer some advice and suggestions in this regard?

I have experienced the same problem you mentioned about hum and noise. I have tried numerous means to fix the issue. None of which have been overly successful. Of course, pumping up the gain (I can't help it!) does nothing to alleviate this. It has been a constant source of irritation to me in an otherwise awesome piece of kit.

My idea is that there is no way around it --- I need to retube the stock tubes (cheap and not of the best quality considering the purchase price) that came with the unit when I bought it brand new way back when. Many Triaxis users in various forums recommend it as they were not happy with the tone out of the box either.

I was stoked to find you have purchased a retube kit from Eurotubes. I too, was considering exactly that in the coming month or two. In particular, I had my eyes on the "Triaxis High Gain Low Output Option" in their catalog. Some time ago, I got my hands on the schematic diagram which confirmed there is a real need to tame the noise by a specific combination of tube placements in the appropriate stages.

My main question is: "did you find that the hum and noise were appreciably lowered by your action as you hoped and therefore easier to live with?". Like you, I don't use noise reduction and tend to not like the result if I do. More tends to be lost than gained. In short, I am hoping this will be the longed for 'magic bullet', so to speak.

Any and all advice is most welcome.

Many thanks,
Ken

PS GMC has provided a big boost to my desire to dust off my gear and actually start using it again!

Addendum:

Since sending this as a private message, I realise only now that there is a specific forum that is appropriate for this topic and there are at least a few other folks out there in GMC land that could potentially chime in who also are the proud owner of a Triaxis. Therefore, I am reproducing it here. That as well as it also seems Muris is on his vacation ...

I was most surprised to find there is even a fresh topic started by maharzan who even now has his hot little hands on a Triaxis himself? Geez. Talk about weird timing! The stars must be aligned or something?! Congrats, BTW! It takes a lot of work to get it to fit your needs but the effort is definitely worth it.

Another Pickup-thread

Hi guys
After playing my Ibanez through different amps, I`ve conluded that it`s my pickup I don`t like, not the gain channel on my amp.

When playing riffs with much gain, f.i. Pantera, Dream Theater, Symphony X and those types of gain amounts, the sound becomes pretty muddy, and I have a hard time hitting all the harmonics as clean as I want.

The guitar will mainly be used (at least the bruidge position) for riffs like the ones mentioned above, and different kinds of rock and metal. It won`t be any extreme metal or death metal, but things like Satriani, Gilbert, Rush, Dream Theater.

Although I almost exclusively mentioned metal, I want the guitar to be versatile. The gain tone is the most important, but to some point it must be able to play some clean stuff and maybe some blues.

I`ve been looking at several Dimarzios, and I`m aware of the high end Bareknuckles, and I saw that virtouso Kiko Lourerio uses a SD TB4 I believe in his custom esp. But I tend to get confused witht eh different specs and so on.

The post written short:
My guitar is of mahogny with a stop tail. I need a cleaner pickup for tight progrock/progmetal/some light fusion and blues.

Please advice

The original BBC report was very shocking and shocked the world into action.

Band Aid and Live Aid raised lots of money and provided lots of help, this has been ongoing.
Gaaahhhhh!

Gaaaahhh!

I've just realised how long this is gona take. Got the guitar 2 months ago and, though I'm improving, I still can't play a single tune worth listening to. All the songs and riffs worth playing are around level 4-5 and Slash would slice his wrist if he heard my Sweet Child O'mine.

Sooo.. How long time is it gona take to be able to play the things in lv 4-5 if i practise 1-1,5 hour 4-5 days a week. Feels like the lv 1-3 is too boring and I'm afraid that will ultimately stop me from playing

Are there any fun and cool sounding Lv 2-3 songs i could play 'till I'm good enough for the real McCoy? Or do you suggest an alternative way? (right now I'm practicing Ivans pentatonic boxes, Sweet Child, Under the brigde, Kris' speedpicking and the chords by OToole and the songs are too tough).

Love,Martz

Hi there.

I really like the 101 lessons but I'm having trouble finding them all. The most logical place would be under guitar lessons- under a 101 box. Or can I browse them all some where else?

/Martz

And btw... Would it be posible to add a slow mo in the streaming. I often have to play a section 10 times before I have time to see exactly what the teatcher is doing with their fingers. An the backing tracks are sometimes a bit too fast for me..

I love the rest!

Ciao

Hi Jose! I'm practicing your lesson called "Hard Rock Shred Solo", probably going to post in the rec, but I noticed that the 185 bpm backing track is looped, and I thought that a non-looped track is required to make a good REC record, so is it possible that you could you give me a not looped one?

Thanks
Wabba

Purple Hayes Mtp Thread - November

This month will be all about the slap!

Your monthly REC take will be to master this lesson :
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Larry_Graham_Style/

All assignments will be revolving around the techniques needed to play that lesson. You should also start working on it right now and hopefully by the end of month you will be able to play it well.

Weekly assignment 1:

Slap bass exercise 1

Lessons to practice:

Slap Bass Exercises 1: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...bass-exercises/

Goal : To master different slap patterns and be able to play them against a drum backing.

Purpose : Practice your slap bass technique and get new slap patterns under your belt.

Instructions :

I want you to learn all the patterns included in the lesson. Practice them slowly with a metronome/drum backing or Guitar Pro file included. It is important to start slowly and gradually increase the tempo. I want you to slap and pluck a little harder (then in previous slap videos you posted). Try to attack strings with more force in order to get proper sound. Slap bass is an aggressive technique, don't worry strings will be able to withstand it. You want to be aware of your dynamic range possible when slapping.

Requirements :

Post updates on your practice daily if possible, describing what have you done. I want you to post the recording audio or preferably video of your performance of the patterns from the lesson played against a drum backing at the tempo you are comfortable with. For that recording I want you to record on a tempo you are comfortable with , if its 50-60 or 80 bpm doesn't matter. Its better to play clean and right then sloppy on a faster tempo. Just notify me which tempo backing track you need for recording and I'll send it to you.

Deadline to complete: 8th of November

Good luck and remember to post your questions and progress!

Back From A Long Break

Hi guys,
I really enjoyed my first 6 months here at GMC from june till december 2008. Then I didn`t renew my membership ( I don`t recall if there's been a reason at all...) but focused on playing with my band, the Rocking Sixties. Yeah, we're a coverband, covering anything from the 60's until now (unfortunately, as I must say). I am 28 years old, my bandmembers are all older than 50, sometimes 60, but it's really cool to play with them. But I'm having trouble to convince them that Bon Jovi's "it's my life" is not a good song for us...
Well, I've made great improvements during my time here at GMC. Being a rhythm guitar player for like 16 years, I'm pretty good at rhythm stuff and a quick study too.
I really want to get deeper into playing alternative and metal rhythm, but also solo stuff, as a contrast to the stuff I play in my band (which I also really love, but it's not that much of a challenge).
And I really like the community here, everone is friendly and always ready to answer any question.
So it's great to be back!

Some Thinking About My Ibanez

Hi there GMC'ers! I have to much time, as I visited my cousins at Northern Ireland, and I couldn't take the guitar to the plane. I started to wonder what should I do with my second guitar - Ibanez RG 370B (don't know what are the big differences between B and Dx, if there are any except the markers on the fretboard). Anyway - the guitar has a "floyd rose" bridge, but this bridge is of the crappy ibanez bridges family, so it really can't be used and maintain tuning. So now it is my second guitar, that can't be retuned fast, and I can't use the only thing that this guitar has and my schecter devil doesn't. It isn't a prestige/valuable model, so the only reason to keep it, is that's my first electric guitar ever, so it is bit sentimental. And here is the main question, and three answers that can be given:

1.Spend some money on this guitar, for example replacing the crappy bridge with a better one, and painting the guitar to look cooler.

2. Trying to make a average guitar a good guitar is a waste of time, so just sell this guitar, save more and buy another better one.

3. Keep the guitar on the wall and don't use it, as I won't get much money for it anyway.

They're the 6th and 10th ones on the page. All you have to do is click the word "Vote" that's on top of each cartoon and it's done. Here is the link:

http://blog.psprint.com/humor/

Best,

Jason"

Best of luck Jason!

My New Guitar: What Pickups Should I Need?

Hey there rocker friends!!

I've joined GuitarMasterClass about a year now and since then i've been having this cheap (but relativelly good for it's price) Stagg Fender-style guitar. Since August I moved to India for my studies and in the town where I am staying is a luthier making extraodinary electric guitars. The particularity is that those guitars are very cheap for what they are worth.

Usually it is a one-piece mohagony (or red cedar) body with rosewood fretboard and 12 layers painting, with very good pickups, vibrato and locking tuners costs (everything entirely handmade) for about 1000 euros. Everything is custom, from the body's shape to the woods and pickups.

I know that I am relatively beginner but I probably won't find such an deal anywhere, and I really like playing guitar and I was planning to buy a new guitar anyway. I feel that having such a good and nice looking guitar will push me to study this instrument hard and progress rapidly.

Now I roughly have got all the specs of the guitar in my head: a yamaha shaped body made of a single piece mahogany, rosewood fretboard, sunburst painting, and customized fender-type neck (flatter at buttom to access high notes and 1mm wider than Strats to prevent the high E and low E strings from sliding from the fretboard).

For the pickups a High output pickup and two low output single coil seem the best for me.

Now, I am not a very experienced player, and I am not very sure wich pickups I need exactly.

The styles I like go from blues (especially distorded blues, like Gary Moore or Jimmi Hendrix) to rock (modern bands like RHCP), and hard-rock (Led Zep, Deep Purple, ACDC, and even Black Sabbath in some aspects).

So basically a high output pickup for hard-rock/rock distorded sound, and two other ones for a warmer bluesy sound.

I am not aiming at playing heavy metal or any very "dirty sound" music.

Now this luthier told me about those very good pickups he is working with: Lindy Fralin. Now I am not completely sure I need THAT good pickup, since I don't have an unlimited budget^^

Can you guys help me out wondering what kind of pickup I need? Maybe a Gibson P90 and two fender single coils?

Thanks in advance guys
