I wanted to share this with ya!
I got the link from bass player mag about their free online issue about Tone and Technology. Its got strings and various bass (related) pedals reviews in it as well as some tone tips. Its a very good resource to check out - especially strings reviews!  http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/bptt/ We can discuss here some gear too... I'm currently waiting for MXR Micro Amp pedal to arrive which I need for boosts during live performance. I have been playing lately and I'm very happy with a DOD FX25b envelope filter pedal - it works awesome on my bass
