Thanks for bringing this amazing musician to my attention

I had never heard of him before. I did some searching and found a tribute site run by his family. Then a song began to play. Epilogue for Lisa....I really got tears in my eyes. What an incredible piece of music

I've been learning Epilogue over the past couple of days.

This one really caught my attention

It's really hard to select a favorite because his work is just amazing. I already ordered his cd "Powers of ten". Even though i have only heard a small amount of his work i can say: "the most amazing guitar player/composer" i have ever seen.....The best in my opinion

Thanks again for bringing this guy to my attention

Yeah, Shawn was probably the greatest musician of all time in my eyes. He was also a total genius intellectually. For instance, he could recite entire books from memory. That sort of thing. Lots of great stories about his intellect.

Grey Pianos Flying is one of the best songs from the studio Powers of Ten and Powers of Ten; Live! albums.

Here's a couple Lane/Hellborg-era solos and an unreleased solo demo of Shawn's called Sins:

Also check out:

A lot of Shawn’s underground fame early on came from his appearance on an album called M.V.P., where he soloed several times along with Brett Garsed and Frank Gambale (which is where the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ3cj94_r84 came from). It was re-released awhile back, but without an opening solo by Shawn that he was never satisfied with. It was taken out and replaced by a new solo by two-handed tapping master T.J. Helmerich, out of respect for Shawn after he passed away.

Abstractlogix.com carries most of his stuff. His first solo studio album was Powers of Ten, which finally saw a re-release recently, but was then taken down because there’s some major issues between the label and Shawn's family. Powers of Ten Live is an essential album as well, and is quite a bit different from the studio version because of the full live band setting. For instance, Epilogue (For Lisa) was an acoustic number on the studio album, but really came into its own on PoT Live with Shawn playing it on eclectic and using the vibrato bar to give the song more flavor.

Then there’s Shawn’s second studio album, The Tri-Tone Fascination. It’s good, but not nearly as classic as Powers of Ten. Shawn had already moved towards East meets West, fusion / Indian type music with Jonas Hellborg. His music moved in a whole different direction from the rock/fusion/jazz solo material.

With Jonas he released an album called Abstract Logic, which was recently re-mastered and re-issued nicely. They also did a live DVD in Paris, and a whole lot more albums including: Personae, Temporal Analogues of Paradise, Good People in Times of Evil, Icon, Time is the Enemy, Zen House, and they appeared on half of an album called Two Doors. The best / most famous among Lane fans of those is probably Good People in Times of Evil and Icon.
