Hi! So I read your profile and came up with a fun exercise it will help you develop your alternative picking plus you will learn scales much better
it is a mechanical exercise so make sure to practice it very slow and have a full control over your hands!
It's not easy and after you will master it your mind will start thinking a little different!
This exercise in G major and has all the positions
here is the tab!

Great! And please let me know if you have any questions! I chose G major because it is the most common key and most songs are written in this key plus for some reason it's easier to learn!

Hi Alex,
I did start working on the scale yesterday. It's not one I am used to. Some of the notes repeat, and some have single notes on a string, or skip a string. I am used to more sequential. I have been putting a lot of time into the Metal Rhythm with Octaves, but I have started on the first 1/3 of the scale.I just got focusrite Scarlett 8i6 Audio Interface, and trying to get that working. I will record my progress soon!

I am into "Killing two birds with one stone"
So all the exercises I am giving you will help you with a few things at the same time!
This exercise will help you develop alternative picking, string skipping and you will learn scale shapes better because it makes your brain think in a different way! I am looking forward to hear your progress! Let me know if you need any help!

Alex you are a genius! This is the first time I have almost learned a whole scale in one night. I learned 3/4ths of it. I should have the rest down tonight. I really like the scale, is this modified? This doesn't seem like the usual scale like a C Major.Once I have it down, i will record so you can see. Thanks!

I am a very slow learner and it took me forever to learn anything, so I discovered how to make learning fun! This scale is one this I have created for myself smile.gif It helped me the same way! I have learned scale in a few days!

Genius! I learned the scale in two hours! I will spend more time over the weekend hammering it down. My concern is my picking, and fingering. I will make a video of my progress over the weekend. This is Epic. Can't wait to learn the other scales! I want to make sure I have this one down first. Also the end find of reminds me of a arpeggio, or maybe its to practice in and out picking. Thanks for sharing this, and tailoring the lessons to the student. This is exactly what I was looking for!

So now you are ready for the second part of this exercise! You have to transpose G major yourself! This is the best way to learn!
I want you to do C major scale now! You can do exactly the same shapes but starting with C
Let me know how it goes!

Hi Alex,

Ok, so it's just a matter of shifting the starting position, and the shapes. I will give it a go, and see what I come up with. Also just have to look at what the notes are in the C Major Scale, and then look at the fret board and see where the shapes line up.

I have been practicing the G Major scale, but my time this weekend was limited, I am studying to finish my degree. I have a big exam coming up. I will record my progress tomorrow with the G Major scale. I know I could use help on the fingering, and picking.

Also I am probably getting ahead of myself, but you have tricks like this for minor scales?

It will take time but results will impress you smile.gif
About minor scale It's easier than you think! smile.gif
What I want you to do is to start learning numbers
Gmaj - I
Ami - II
Bmi III
Cmaj - IV
Dmaj - V
Emi - VI
F#dim - VII

I want you to learn all the numbers in every key you can do notes or chords!
Now here is the trick!
Say you are playing G major scale so you can do the same thing for parallel minor which is VI
Playing G major scale you also can use the same shapes for E minor
I hope that makes sense smile.gif
It works for Ionian mode only! So if you have to play in Dorian this trick won't work
but there are others smile.gif
Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Alex,
I have been working on the G Major Scale. Practicing it about 30 minutes a day. I really like the scale. I will work on transposing C Major this weekend.Of course I wouldn't mind if you wanted to give me that scale too. It would be easier to transpose the others because I have two Major scales of reference. However you want to do it, is cool with me. I will also work on memorizing the numbers

Let's do that! Try doing it yourself first and if you can't figure something out I will help you!
You will get much better results if you will transpose yourself!
