I love old school metal, like metallica, megadeth, and black sabbath, i dont listen to much new stuff for i cant stand it. most of the time i just listen to my , cds, And then when i do turn on the radeo and listen to what is new i cant stand what i am hearing. I have just recently started listening to more progessive metal like dream theater. i feel like i am stuck in what to listen too. NEED HELP!

first of all, you're not gonna find very much good metal on the radio.. When I first got into metal, I only liked 80's metal.. But now I have discovered bands that aren't as famous as Metallica and Iron Maiden ect. but I like them a hundred times more! Especially Lamb of God and Gojira are "newer" metal bands that are amazingly good. Dont't be mistaken by new metal and nu metal, this is not nu metal! Nu metal is just a genre (that sucks IMO). There is lots of newer metal that is not in the genre nu metal. Which means: there is lots of newer metal band that doesn't suck.

As far as i'm concerned, you've answered your own question............
Dream Theater
Sorry im a DT nut- but honestly sometimes i find that i just cycle their albums now and then so their music doesnt get stale.
Maybe try out symphony x? Paradise Lost is a great album
Posted by: Trond Vold Apr 6 2008, 10:28 AM
There's so much good metal out there you will never hear on the radio.
Symphony X, Strapping Young Lad or any Devin Townsend metal project, Angra, Septic Flesh, Testament, Meshuggah, Pain of Salvation, Ayreon, (old) In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Krux,
There's a bit of style-variation in these bands though, but they are all great in my opinion.
Posted by: superize Apr 6 2008, 10:58 AM
As everony one said there are alot of great bands out there that are not as well known
Here are some that i listened to
Rhapsody of fire
Moonlight Agony
Nighwish
Blind Guardian
Hammerfall
Children of bodom
Stratovarius
Sonata Arctica
Grave Digger
Posted by: Toni Suominen Apr 6 2008, 11:26 AM
I agree with Trond, If you wanna hear quality metal, don't try and look for it in the radio
And if you like progressive metal, you must check out Opeth!
Posted by: Martin la guitarra Apr 6 2008, 11:40 AM
personally i love slipknot, best band ever in my opinion
Posted by: Robin Apr 6 2008, 11:41 AM
If you want metal that is dirty and raw you should check out 80's/90's black metal. There is tons and tons of good bands in this genre, also new bands.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0haPd1AiAXY
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0_F4KiYFVWQ
http://youtube.com/watch?v=n5TsYgBSN3U
etc.
most people wont like this right away, but bands like http://youtube.com/watch?v=98SaFvW-JyQ&feature=related i think is a good start to get used to more heavy stuff. Opeth is ridiculously fantastic, so check them out if you havent yet.
Also check out Saxon and Pentagram(US). Very early heavy metal.

Theres music out there of every flavor and tons that match what sounds best to your ears, but you need to delve deeper with your research then just trying to find songs that the mainstream media force feed you by playing every hour on the radio. Alot of power metal bands take the sound of early metallica and iron maiden and put it on steroids. Sense you say you like Dream Theater, I think you may like some progressive power metal. A few bands to get you started off the top of my head are:
Kamelot
Blind Gaurdian
Adagio
Dragonforce
Rage
Sentenced
Edguy
Mercenary (definitly check these guys out, very under rated)
If you want something with less melody and more balls, heres a couple of the best
Protest the Hero - Im begining to sound like a fanboy but these guys deserve it, f'n crazy guitar skills
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Machine Head - The Blackening
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
Unearth- The Oncoming Storm ( Their newest one kicks tail also)
The Human Abstract- Nocturne
Children of Bodom- Will either inspire you or depress the hell out of you because their so good
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Avenged Sevenfold - Waking the Fallen (yeah I know, mainstream blah blah blah, this cd rocks, end of story)
Shadows Fall- Pretty much anything, these guys shred
Everytime I Die
Mastodon- Blood Mountain and Leviathon especially
Theres a whole lot of underground bands that I could list, but this is sort of metal 101 and I want you to try and find your own list of music you enjoy. Nothing happened to metal, its just not the most marketable music at the moment so it doesnt get as much exposure as the same sound garden and pearl jam songs a hundred times a day. You have to find it on your own, but honestly that half the fun haha. The internet is a wonderful tool. Happy Hunting !

Well chances are you wont find good metal bands on the radio, Unless your paying for satellite radio and get the underground stations. You have to look in weird places, Searching the net will reveal some excellent bands.
If you want some bands with a more old school approach, check out Warbringer and EVILE, two awesome thrash bands bringing back the old school thrash riffage of slayer, exodus, megadeth, testament, and all the good stuff.
All in all alot has happened to Metal, Perhaps so much has happened to it in such subtle ways hidden from mainstream view, it goes unnoticed. If your into Progressive stuff like Dream Theater, check out Meshuggah, Evergrey, Opeth, Nevermore, and Jag Panzer, Name some genres you want to get into, and Ill gladly help you out, This is what im best at

Music just runs in cycles like everything else and those cycles tend to overlap. Eventually it will come full circle again.
Imo todays nu-metal is a mashing together of 80's hard rock and grunge of the 90's.
Alot of people blame the downfall of 80's metal to Nirvana, i know alot of people will disagree with me but if you want my honest opinion about who brought about the change to what we have now look no further then Guns n Roses. They are the ones who bridged the gap between 80's metal and the seattle sound. Take a long listen to Guns n Roses and you will hear it.
Of course thats my opinion.
On another note most heavy metal that is good never got air play in their prime unless you listend to college radio stations.
Real good metal is always fringe with a tight nit following of hardcore fans.

I agree with Daniel here. GNR really bridged the gap between the Seatle Grunge and 80's hair. Unfortunately,IMHO the grunge sound won the airwaves and eventually pretty much took bands like Tesla,Dokken,Motly Crue, ect.... off the shelves. Those bands that could see where things were going, and willing to give up there style to sell copies stayed around longer. Some are still selling out today!
Take a look at Bon Jovi for example. From there first album Runaway, to the crap they play today. It's almost like they have gone "country", to there credit, they are still selling out shows.
Personaly, I think the style of the 80's and early 90's are gone. Too much rap and pop music has taken over the top 40. Glad I have a good collection od cd's!

As some others already stated, if you are looking for metal, the radio is definitely the wrong place and about old vs new metal, well, I have my own philosophy about all this, for me there is music that I like, and music that I don't like, I don't care if it is old school metal, or Nu metal, or metal at all. And I am almost sure that if you keep exploring todays scene you will sooner or later find some new bands that you will also like. If you want some advice about progressive metal, I would also recommend Opeth, and one of my alltime faves: Fates Warning (check out "Awaken the Guardian!!!)
Posted by: JVM Apr 16 2008, 05:00 PM
I have to give a prop to the Opeth suggestion. My favorite metal band going at the mo'. Many other really good ones mentioned though But I agree with what robin said, Opeth is a really good start for heavier new metal stuff.

XM's Liquid Metal (41, I think) channel does a pretty good job of getting a variety of different and interesting stuff on the air. At least for those of us in the US.
Posted by: Fsgdjv Apr 16 2008, 08:02 PM
Well, I obviously agree when it comes to the Opeth suggestion, I think they have something that everyone can like in them. And they are also a great way to get into the heavier stuff. (I still haven't found aband I like as much as Opeth)
Dream Theater is a good suggestion aswell.
And if you're into Sabbath maybe you should check out some traditional doom? You could try Candlemass and Krux as a start. (Even though I'm not a a fan of their stuff I still think they have some good riffs here and they and I can difenetly see how someone with different tastes than me could really like them.)

Opeth is what happened to metal ( it got better )
also check out
Gojira
In Flames

actually we have one radio station that plays metal in the middle of the day,and they play every thing, and every kind and every time of day....but there is only one...so I agree there is no much metal in the radio....

And when has it cycled before?
Thanks

Check out Muse, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, and some others listed here. Make sure to check out Orphaned Land, extremely awesome band.

What has happened to metal? It's freaking awesome. If you think it's bad now you haven't seen nothing, when I was growing up in the late 90's early 2000's all there was was Nu Metal, like Korn, Limp Biskit, Mudvayne, etc... there wasn't much good going on then. Now Mastodon has gotten popular, Machine Head, Opeth, Trivium, The Sword, High on Fire, many good bands have relesed great metal albums recently, just do some digging and you'll find something you like, I promise.

since we're on the topic of metal...
i really like listening to metal but i cant stand bands that scream or growl, i know its popular but i just cant stand it. are there any metal bands out there that are good but dont have constant screaming vocals or vocals that are really low and demonic. like metallica for instance, they're a great metal band but james hetfield never screams or growls he just has a good metal singing voice and i can actualy understand what he says.
Posted by: erik Apr 17 2008, 09:33 AM
I felt excactly like you a couple of years ago. You've probably heard of Iron Maiden. Slayer also doesn't quite growl, they are maybe the heaviest band I know of that doesn't growl. Also check out Pantera, and maybe som glam metal like Motley Crüe (or early Pantera ). Also there's a Norwegian band called Stonegard that you might like. And since you already like Metallica: check out Megadeth

I feel your pain... I got really into Metallica, Ozzy, Iron Maiden a little while ago. However, when I look in Guitar Player magazine, there are so many metal bands that I just can't stand. They are either too intense for me, or they are trying too hard...

Some bands i listen, that maybe are a little hardcore but incredibly good are
Trivium (Anthem, The Crusade)
Bullet For my Valentine (Scream, Aim, Fire)
All That Remains (The Air That I Breathe)
As I Lay Dying (The Darkest Nights)
the song at the end im including so you dont start off listening to their worst song
Posted by: Iron King Apr 27 2008, 06:05 AM
I know exactly what you mean
In my opinion 80's thrash is metal perfected
One thing I can't stand is what I call the "Present Bands". Bands with names like In Flames, In This Moment, As I Lay Dying. I just don't think they sound good, I especially hate their vocals. I can't stand seeing these bands live because to me it just ends up sounding like garbled mess with someone screaming words at the top of their lungs.
If you ask me, metal has to be fast and aggressive but it must have a strong beat to head bang to. Once you get the drop tunning with the complicated lead parts and the double bass non stop... it's just too much, you know? There's no longer a strong and identifiable beat.
Thankfully I think metalcore is just a fad. Nobody will remember them in 50 years, but one thing's for sure. Metal bands, even after our lifetime, will list Metallica and Slayer and other early metal bands as influences.
That being said, I do enjoy bands like High on Fire and Lamb of God.

So very true. Personally I strongly dislike growling and other types of "I have a hedgehog down my thoat" voices.
It's not always nasty though. Amorphis for example, use growling now and then, but it fits good with the music and sounds good.

I have to agree with you about Dream Theater, my favorite progressive rock band! They are all virtuosos, and Petrucci has technique and tone for days! I, too, cycle through all their albums. Which is your favorite?
I don't know what nu-metal or emo or heavy metal means. They are just labels to pigeonhole music and bands. I like bands with a good rock sound, like Dream Theater, who have all the right ingredients. Any band that exhibits good musicianship, including the singer, is okay by me. I can't stand that screaming crap, or the bands that dwell on death, or dark subjects, or skulls, or whatever their problem is with society at the moment. I think it's time to jump on board the positive image bandwagon for a change. Why all the negativity? Of course, that's just my opinion...
