I'm using the KORG MA-30. I have it set at:
Beat: 1
anything above 60 BPM and i start getting confused when playing... i can play the speeds fine in guitar pro... but when i use the metronome i'm not sure if i'm playing it at the right time and get lost.... is this ok? Or should i just keep at it?

I am not too good with the metronome, but.. I start doing mistakes when I focus to much on counting the beeps, when I just play and the "trance" works I think it is okay. And few first hours with the metronome were hard...

Are there some other options on metronome except Beat, like measure, note value etc?
Per example, there is 4/4 bar and you can set 4th or maybe 8th notes to click,
with 4th notes you'll have wider gaps between each click.

Also, a good excersice to get good at this is to just set the metronome on something and then play on an open string, start with whole notes or half notes, then go to quarter notes, then quarter note triplets (allthough those are really tricky, so you might want to save that for later), then eight notes, eight note triplets etc. That makes you more used to counting with a metronome and dividing the beat, and will prepare you for some "real" playing with the metronome.

Yep, you either increase metronome speed with small increments or choose a speed and test different note values on open strings to get the feel. Then you can fret some notes, switch between notes and play the same thing through. smile.gif

Its ok to get confused when beginning working with metronome..Its same as with everything else, you need to start slowly and practice playing against it in time..It will "click" in soon and you will feel when to play what in relation to metronome clicks..Its good idea to do what Fsgdjv and Berko mentioned to get the feel for it..

Hah! Kris is wrong there. The metronome was invented in 1815. And there were people playing fast before. tongue.gif Of course it would be stupid not to use a metronome now that we have them because is makes it much easier.

It's important to understand the note values when doing metronome practice. It will made your job of practicing a lot easier.

You didn't wrote how do you practice. Do you practice using whole notes, half notes, quarters, eights, sixteens, triplets?

I suggest you start using metronome using simple measures like 4/4 which means 4 quarter notes per bar. This means that there is one whole note in a bar and values can be easily put in a bar like this:

| 4/4 bar|

|1 whole note| 4 clicks 1 note

|2 half notes| 2 clicks 1 note

|4 quarter notes| 1 click 1 note

|8 eight notes| 1 click 2 notes

|12 eight note triplets| 1 click 3 notes

|16 sixteen notes| 1 click 4 notes

|24 sixteen note triplets| 1 click 6 notes

when you start practicing it is good idea to start from slow tempos and big note values so you don't get lost, and gradually increase the note values as you go along. So you can start by doing half notes for example, at 60 bpm. And then when you come to 120bpm you go to quarter notes etc. This way you won't get lost in a beat. If you do get lost at some point, don't worry, and just keep practicing the initial problems will go away very soon once you get used to playing with metronome.

One more thing. You should play really slowly (I played 16th at 40bpm to begin with) until you feel when you are off. It takes a look of practice though (at least for me). But it's one of the most important things to learn (for a beginner anyway).
