Question: How do you get a guitar player to turn his volume down? Answer: Put a piece of sheet music in front of him!. I found this joke and that shows us how much sightreading is ignored by guitarists. Hi. I'm new here but I love a good musician joke. So following your lead Vinod ... "How do you get a keyboard player to turn down? ...Take the sheet music away". In all seriousness though reading is tough on string instruments due to the many possible options for playing the same note. For example middle C (second space from the top of the staff) on a standard electric guitar can be played in 5 different places. Knowing which one is best is dependent on the context - it's relation to what you play before and after it. It's really great to see a dedicated music reading section on this website. It's pretty rare actually. Bravo to Vinod and the webmasters! I used to be a terrible reader. When I started high school I auditioned to be in the jazz band. I passed the audition but every player in the jazz band also had to play in the concert/marching band - no exceptions. Well, there's no guitar in concert band so I learned (was forced *If you can put in 20 minutes a day 5 or 6 days a week (patiently) on sight reading you will notice improvement in about a month. Again, it's pretty awesome that there's a 'reading' section here! -------------------- |
