well,let me tell you
as with many countries, the governments are finally figuring out that they are runing out of money with to much debt( much like what is happening in u.s.) although the british government is making the tough call and is cuting some social welfare programs instead of passing the buck to future generations( like the U.S.should have done) and these people that have been so used to geting free money
don't like it

Because of social media, and tactics learned from the Arab Spring, mobs now are super coordinated. Hoodlums now figured out they can rob any place they want if they can get enough people together. And because Blackberry mobile has encrypted messaging, the government can't keep an eye on the messaging.

They're not protesting against the state, because none of them have stated their demands, other than objecting to police brutality. This is also part of what happens when thousands of young people are sitting around idle without work or school.

I'm usually all for rioting, tearing stuff up and telling the government whos in charge, but this really has just devolved into vandalism and looting, nothing noble about it. We should send some of our cops over there. We have some cops here that we have to keep on a leash, and I'm not referring to the K-9 unit biggrin.gif

Most of the people rioting are simply opportunistic thugs.

A gangster was shot dead by the police, a gang thought they'd respond by vandalising, police didn't respond so much, more gangs joined in, people realised that they could steal from shops and burn cars/property as the police didn't have the numbers to stop them, this snowballed.

England has always had strong social status differences. These are people with no job, no school, no forseeable better future. It started with a protest against police brutality (in england the police can be kinda brutal) after a familydad was shot dead by police (and police saying he shot (first), which later was found there are no proof of), and then escalated into people rioting for goods. They have nothing, and grabbing the few things that they can, is worth it for them.
It is a very sad situation - not just the fact that there are hundreds of thugs robbing whatever they can get, but the fact that society created this group of people in the first place. You don't have to look further than the british political system to see that it's a very divided society.

As some youth worker said in an interviewe about these riotsr, 'Children are not born as thugs, it's socialised in to them.'

I'm old enough to have been around and living in Toxteth during the Toxteth riots some 30 years ago. I also remember Broadwater Farm, Handsworth, Bristol and other places in the UK rioting over 25 years ago. At the time much of the general rhetoric was the same and what was glossed over and largely ignored were the social inequalities in the UK.

Little has changed since then, and arguably some things have gotten worse. In 1980 95% of the wealth in the the UK was in the hands of 15% of the population now it's 98% in the hands of 6%. England is at the bottom of the league table for social mobility - if you are born poor you are more likely to die poor then in any other developed nation. Health and life span is considerably worse for those who live in the inner cities and the inner city population is disproportionately non-white.

The police are10 times more likely to stop you if you are non-white then if you are white in the same area and doing the same thing. If you are under 25 yrs old its 20 times. If you appear in court you are 20 times more likely to receive a custodial sentance for the same 1st offense as someone who is white. Non-white children are significantly more likely to grow up in a home where the male role model is either in prison or has a prison record. If you have a prison record you are significantly more likely to be unemployed.

I could go on at length but I won't as this sort of inequity leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. What I will say is this - 35 years ago after Toxteth the UK government talked about the lessons to be learnt. It seems like we haven't learnt any.

It's a pity, the same happens here in South America... the social/economical differences are so strong and this only bring problems.. there are lots of Children that aren't going to school, and this will be something dangerous in the future...
We had similar problems around 10 years ago... I hope that everything goes normal soon.

Mates, unfortunately, all I can see over at the news is about the economic disaster about to crash over a big part of the world... I hope that somehow the leaders of this damn planet will see a decent way to get through this potentially deadly hell...

Thanks for the replies smile.gif It looks like they looted and burned the SONY distrubution warehouse that is supposed to supply big parts of Europe. Evidently 150 indie/minor record lables had their product in there to be distributed by Sony through distribution deals. About a years worth of product just went up in flames (not that most folks want CD's these days) but if you are in Europe, it may be a while before certain releases have physical units again. But that's the smallest issue at this point.

The unrest seems to be happening in poorer communities where the youth feel a bit abandoned the state/govt. Not that this is an excuse, just seems to be the case. I wish the people involved could find a more positive way to deal with their anger, such as playing guitar and writing music! smile.gif I wish the govt in Britain would start a "One Guitar Per Child" program.

All kidding aside, it does seem there are some serious social issues going on that need to be worked out.

Definitely bad thing for the people, I hope it will pass, and that they will come to sense. I'm not sure what is happening there, I'm not living there, so I won't pass any judgement.

If the UK government restricts social networking in answer to the riots, what separates it from the Arab tyrannies and China?

Thanks for all the replies guys wink.gif I had no idea the social unrest in England was this bad. I don't think anyone here in the states really does. I mean, we have rough parts of town and high unemployment but folks dont' bust in to a riot and start burning busses (Well, outside of LosAngeles) without some serious provocation.

For all those in England, I really hope all the change going on ends in the most positive way it can. Everyone, all around the world is struggling a bit just now. I reamin optimistic that we will all pull through together somehow. Here's to keeping the faith smile.gif
