Hi Owen!
this is what I answered in a similar question.:
So... if you want to have a some steps to how to practice , this is what do you have to do:
* In the beginning , I do not suggest practicing your vocal technique for more than 20 minutes at a time, four times a week.
* Never try to practice with more than one idea in mind at a time. Try focusing and concentrating on only one.. for example: different issues like, breathing, resonance, bad habits or singing on pitch...
It means: 5 minutes for breathing ( deep breathings, holding... breath control ..using diaphragm...Relaxing and opening the throat space, etc). 10 minutes for warm up (hum with M, N, NG and HM for resonance). 5 minutes of articulation ( using exercises with vowels and consonants). 5 minutes for agility (with different speeds). 5 minutes for singing on pitch.. etc.. and go on!
* After you begun overcomming some of your bad habits, you can gradually increase your practice time up to an hour a day (but no more than that). I also suggest taking a couple of days off from it. The voice needs rest, and so does your brain. It's good to give yourself time to process the information.
* When you do go to sing, the voice will automatically remember what to do by itself.
Hope it helps
Luciana
