You can view the tabs and let them be played with a midi sound to make it easier to comprehend how things are played...
You can also add the metronome click or play the tab in slow motion - the possibilites are endless! I would say it is an essential tool for a guitarist (especially for composing)

Also there's a chord and scale guide, you can write the lines of lots of different instruments, check tunes. As Zakk said, nowadays is the one of the best tool for musician for creating music

Guitar pro has lots of tools. Most importantly it will play back tabs and allow you to hear the metronome click and to slow down/speed up tempo. You can also use the tuner, scale diagrams, scales etc etc from its tools. Very essential tool to have.

Free alternative to Guitar Pro will be Tux Guitar (with less features) : http://tuxguitar.herac.com.ar/
It will also play guitar pro tab files.
