GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Search Suggestions, Bookmarks, Etc

Search Suggestions
Get search suggestions http://content.screencast.com/users/kristofer7/folders/Jing/media/7b0a131c-a20f-4f1e-90fa-69da7d9d0e55/00000445.png These suggestions are based on popular search terms at GMC and should make it easier for you to find killer lessons that suit your taste.

Bookmarks
Today you might have noticed bookmarks look a little different.

In order to solve a bug which would make it hard to move a bookmark to the root folder, we had to upgrade the code and software. As a side effect of this fix, you now also have trash folder in the http://content.screencast.com/users/kristofer7/folders/Jing/media/61944cf5-f7d9-4f95-9cf3-a54eb6ab9972/00000465.png - which can be useful when you want to hide some bookmarks but not completely remove them.

Other than this - controls are pretty much the same.

Site speed / response time
Since a couple of weeks back the site is more responsive. This is particularly noticeable in the forum. See previous http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=44388.

Other
It is now possible to use the back button when you have checked out a series on the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/video-lessons/lesson-series/ - without having to redo the filtering.

As awalys we are grateful for suggestions and bug reports!

Thanks for the upgrades Kris. Actually this change for the bookmarks was something I was planning to suggest so you guys read my mind biggrin.gif

Hey Kris,

I just want also point out that I know a few people had issues with the quick access panel. Where it wasn't closing when you clicked cancel, the x, or even after you posted. It is currently working again properly on my end as of this morning! smile.gif

Excellent!

I don't know if it would be possible to add this feature to the scale generator, but I think it would be GREAT to have the ability to click a button and view the scale as "intervals" in that key of scale or mode!

+1. Great suggestion. I saw this approach on another website and thought it was really useful for practicing and learning scales.

Posted by: derper Jun 5 2012, 07:43 PM

Yeah, it would be a huge help for me in particular....for where I'm at, and how I WANT to view the fretboard. I see "patterns" (scales, modes etc) but I'm missing the "interval view", which when mixed with chord shapes and arpeggios.....well, it can give you the REAL story on what's happening in the music!! As opposed to "play this note, and it works".

Intervals!!

In the meanwhile, I've taken to just writing them out on paper. Boring, but it helps.

So basically you want to be able to tell the scale generator to show the 3rd 5th and b7 in the key of A (random example) - do I understand you?

Should be doable!

I like it smile.gif
I have about 2000 book marks, so I just head straight over to the guitar lessons page now haha.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 7 2012, 08:16 AM

I think that regarding the Scale Generator, it would be cool to add an option which will re-arrange all the scales based on various other used tunings, such as:

Drop D
Standard D
Drop C
Standard B
Drop A
DADGAD
CGCFGC

Hope this won't be too much of a fuss to put into practice, but I am sure that it will help people get a better grasp on learning various tunings behind lessons or songs which are using them.

This would be great as well - I am thinking about perhaps adding an "advanced" section/tab to the scales generator which would allow for more control.

The idea with this advanced section would be to keep the simplicity of the current version of the scale generator - but allow more control for those who want it. This way advanced users can change tunings, or specify intervals instead of scale names, as suggested in this thread.

I think this level of flexibility would be very useful indeed smile.gif

And the scale generator with intervals instead of note names can be a great tool for explaining chord construction! smile.gif

Nice tweaks, thanks Kris! cool.gif

Yes you are right - it could actually be used as it is like a (clumsy!) chord generator.

Just a small bug report...

If you login with correct username and wrong password, you get an "Incorrect username" screen, which is misleading.
Also, if you login with blank password field, you get a "17" screen biggrin.gif

I find that to be pretty common. The idea, from a security standpoint, is that if someone is trying to crack someone's account by putting in multiple user id's and passwords (a technique called brute force, btw), the bad guy won't be able to tell if he had the user id or password wrong. He then has to spend more time trying to figure out the correct combination.

I would suggest to the site admins that the wording on the page be changed to "Incorrect username or password" and ensure that any login failures redirect to that page. Currently, you get different pages, depending on whether or not you enter a correct username, and that will just help the bad guys.

That's what I meant man. You can find any user's username from the members list anyway...

Sorry Kris, I should have responded much earlier.... yes!! Basically, in an Am Pentatonic/blues/Dorian etc. the "C" note would read as a "b3", etc.

That option would help me, personally, in my current quest of unlocking fretboard knowledge. All of our paths, and interpretations are different, but I'm sure others could benefit from this upgrade, if possible.

And....I cannot thank you enough for this site, and all of the constant effort to listen to the feedback of your users and constantly upgrade the site!! I love being a part of this community!!

These bugs should now be fixed!

Great - we will use this feedback for future tweaks of the scale generator!

How about the embeds? Is it still that you use partial URL for youtube but full URL for soundcloud? If so, can we pick one method for all embeds?

The easiest way for embedding Youtube stuff would be copy-pasting the full embed code from youtube into the post.

No big deal here I was just curious... unsure.gif

Does this mean that it would just be a link? Because I find it real nice to have the video window still inside the forum post rather than opening another tab.

Also I just noticed that I can move my bookmarks to different folders. Before I had to delete the bookmark & re-add it (which I haven't done in a while). Was this always the case that I was just doing wrong or is it a recently added improvement?

And thanks to all the admins who work so hard keeping this site running so smoothly. I never notice any problems & that is intended to be a huge compliment to those who work so hard behind the scenes! smile.gif

Yes - when watching the youtube clip, click "Share" and then "Embed" and you will get a code which you just need to copy-paste here in the forum and the clip will be embedded and playable directly (video window inside a post).

We have recently upgraded bookmarks feature and among other stuff, moving bookmarks around the folders was improved.
