GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Style Request: Phish (trey Anastasio)

Posted by: ElfInSheepsClothing Jun 8 2011, 08:13 PM

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I would love to see some lessons in Trey's style. I've found some of his riffs to be great picking and finger exercises. Thanks.

Pretty interesting biggrin.gif never heard of them, but they sound complex and maybe a little Zappa influenced tongue.gif or I may be too hungry at this hour biggrin.gif

There is definitely a huge zappa influence, particularly in their earlier stuff. They got a lot less complex over the years. I think they do a pretty good job of blending rock, latin jazz, funk and bluegrass.

here's a few more that I think have some cool riffs that make good exercises too.

the opening few minutes of this one:

Yes yes, trey anastasio sort of lessons..much needed smile.gif

Not really interested in how he shreds and all, eally dig his phrasing though. A lot of it is like going from point A to point B, etc but there's a lot of 'outside the box' notes that he seems to use which sort of adds that jazzy feel to it. Would be awesome if someone here could elaborate on his style of playing - detailed video lessons on concepts, licks and so on!

Cheers!

I went through a huge "Phish Phaze" in my highschool/college days!!

Trey is an amazing guitarist. Now the question lies....what type of "lesson"?

A, "In the style of" in which a solo demonstrates a wide range of Trey-style licks and phrasing? (Such as Stephane's "Scofield Style Lesson")

Or perhaps a lesson breaking down an actual solo as well? I imagine we'd see "Sample in a Jar" before "David Bowie" for that style lesson!! wink.gif

Here's a video from a newly formed, local (Portland Oregon Based) Phish tribute band "Lawn Boy"! It was their first show...but you get the point. Same venue, and light guy we used for our EMULATOR show!!

If no instructors here are up to it, I could attempt to put together a "student lesson" eventually....also, I could see if LawnBoy's guitarist, Rob Sipsky, is up to the task of submitting one to Kris to become/be accepted as an "offical" lesson. Rob is great, and I know he has more production experience. Whether he has time and interest, is to be determined.

Oh, and Trey is certainly Zappa and Jazz influenced, but blends several other styles together. I can't believe y'all haven't even HEARD of Phish?!!! They're HUGE!! ohmy.gif That said, I do have faith that if we as students guide you to the right tracks, the instuctors here are more than capable of putting together a solid lesson...even with no real background on Phish!!

Not sure if anyone is still reading this since its way old, but yes something similar to Stephane's lesson on Scofield's style.
Not necessarily the licks that Trey uses but the ideas behind it. I heard him talk about the whole 'tension and release' concept that wherein he uses diminished scales to build up that tension (and he could stay in that zone for as long as he likes) and then get back to all good sweet melodies. Now, I get all this conceptually, but that's about it tongue.gif
Point being that he's able to sustain a jam 8-10 mins without it sounding too boring or cliched. Some words on those lines would also be of great use! He's been my favorite guitarist for a while now!

Cheers!

Hey mate smile.gif Until one of us instructors here nails the concepts behind this dude's playing, how about some tension and release based lesson which you could study - this one studies the concept of using common tones which will sound great from one tonality to another, linking seemingly distant chords smile.gif
