Please go ahead and post your lick of the day entries in this thread. Please follow the instructions as lined out in http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=22790.
Ok, here is a quick and dirty example of a Lick of the Day entry post (and don't worry, this one won't be preselected by me ):
This quite easy funky-style riff is based on the B minor scale and moves quickly between the chord progression:
Bar 1 & 3: I - IV (with passing notes)
Bar 2 & 4: I - III - IV - II
The GP5 file is attached.
Who's next?
Roger
I'll kick it off. I was gonna use this lick on an SI lesson but I am going another direction with that so I just happen to have a video handy
The LICK:
This is a tapped string skipping lick based on B minor pentatonic. Uses alot of left hand hammers so be sure to mute with your right hand and your left hand index finger where possible. This lick is phrased in quintuplets or groups of 5. The ascending portion uses a five note pattern and is pretty easy to play in time. The descending portion is a 4 note grouping but phrased in quintuplets so it is a little trickier to play in time. Kind of a cool sound because you get a rhythmic displacement thing going on.
Awesome licks guys, I like both of them! Great funky lick and great tapping!
Alright, I'm gonna stick with the tapping thing for awhile.
THE LICK:
This is based on the F# minor pentatonic with the exception of the G# at the very start of the lick. The first bar is what I have heard called "turbo tapping". You are basically tapping and hammering the same fret. I still can't do it as clean as I would like but I tried my best The rest of the lick is just a descending run and the whole phrase is 16th triplets. As always with tapping, muting is key. I know there are players on this board with WAY cooler licks then me!! LETS SEE 'EM
Great licks Monte,
Come on everybody, lets submit some licks please
I will upload some licks in some days
When is the deadline? Can you remind me of that one again?
Alright, sticking with the tapping theme
THE LICK:
This lick is actually a complete ripoff of Muris I am sure that some of you are like me and would love to have Muris's alternate picking chops. My wife wants me to look like Brad Pitt too, but it ain't happening Anyways, I am working on Muris's Phrygian advanced lesson and the very last lick of the lesson is one of Muris's licks that gives both your left hand, because of the wide stretches, and your right hand, because of the alternate picking, a serious workout. Muris has no mercy on us poor mortals. I had to come up with something so I decided to tap the lick instead. Makes the fingering easier and it sounds smoother as well, if that is sound you are going for. Since this lick is from Muris's lesson it is straight C-Phrygian. I actually put a little "boost" on it and played it 5 bpm faster than the lesson. Thanks for the lick Muris Have fun and let me know if you have any questions.
Monte
Awesome entries, guys.
Beautiful licks so far !
I am very happy to see Si Lick of the Day kicking in
Ok, here is another one from me (again, won't select myself later on as one of the finalists of course ). It's from a new song I am currently composing
This bluesy riff is fully based on the A minor pentatonic scale with the use of some bass notes, combined with double stops and sliding (to get that bluesy feeling as well).
I have recorded a clean version and a distorted version:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?autocom=gallery&req=si&img=623
I was more aiming along the line of: "when is the deadline for January entries?", I geuss. There must be a deadline for these, surely, as otherwise they will go into the February entries, correct?
Wow great licks guys !! You really captured the essence of Lick Of The Day concept!! I enjoyed every take , great job and keep it up!
I might just record a lick or two tomorrow, while my girlfriend is out shopping with her friend (no, I do not find pleasure in going into 10000 shops on one day )
Sorry for posting 2 licks today. Posted one last night in my neck of the woods and the other one in the morning. Didn't realize I posted 2 times in the same day.
Monte
Great licks of the day, nice work lcsdds and velvet roger keep kickin it
I have some licks up my sleeve which I will be posting later today.
Can I post two? I have two that I would really like to throw at you guys.
I know that I can only post one each day, I'm just trying to lighten this thing up a bit with some more licks I will post one when I get home and one after midnight then!
I won't kill you if it's 23:50 for the 2nd one . That rule is only there in order to prevent any overflow of licks (assuming that everybody is submitted theirs all the time , but at this stage it's not that relevant.
Nevertheless, in general I would like to stick to certain rules to keep it clear for everybody
Ok, here´s my entry.
Pentatonic Tapping Lick
si_lick___page_1.bmp ( 3.38MB )
: 224
This lick uses the simple A Pentatonic scale (except from the B on the low E string). You can use it as an ending lick of your solo in a jam, for instance.
(Is this form ok? Or should I explain more what I´m playing?)
This is fine mate
Great licks of the day, nice work guys!!
This is my lick of 03 jan 2009
Tabed it in Guitarpro
Sorry no video , just a mp3
First i play is 'slow' and then up 'tempo'

(Sorry about the 2 wrong post )
Great, thanks guys.
Finally I can start choosing an entry from more than one
By the way, if I did not select a lick you submitted e.g. today for today's selection, that won't mean that I will not pick it tomorrow or some other day. All entries for this month are valid for the whole month to be selected
One thing is sure, tomorrow no tapping lick will be selected
Pentatonic Lick à la Paul Gilbert
This lick uses only the A Minor Pentatonic scale. When I had a jam with Paul Gilbert before his concert, he played a similiar lick. You can use it in jam sessions/guitar battles/warm up sessions.

Cool lick Tolek
This time it´s not tapping! Let´s write it down in a calendar.
Alright, last tapping lick for awhile, I promise. This one is Andy James style.
THE LICK:
This is pretty much based on B minor pentatonic with a little B natural minor as well. This one uses some tapped slides as well as some string skipping. As always watch the muting, especially with the left hand "hammer-ons from nowhere". Have fun and let me know if you have any questions. Again, I'll lay off the tapping licks for awhile, I just noticed alot of people on the forum said they wanted to work on their tapping so I thought I throw in my 2 cents.
Monte
Cool lick mate, thanks!
There we go GMC with another lick
Blues lick in Cmin pentatonic. (C, Eb,F,G,Bb, C)

A new day a new lick
This a fast rock lick:

First in legato style form the E string up to the G string.
Then going down in a sequence style end with a slide a bend o the 15 fret on the E-string
Played it a few time fast/ slow/ fast
The Whole Tone Scale
The whole tone scale is a scale that has 6 notes which are separed by 3 semitones (Major 2nd). Try to find your own licks with this cool scale!

I think Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton invented this repeating technique.
Without the wah wah it also sounds cool. This lick is often used in rock songs
I am doing this in Am pentatonic scale.
I used the wah wah on my line6 POD XT Live
Hope you like it
Cool use of Wah there, get's right into the selected licks
Just noticed something It's January 09, not 08!
Gmaj7 and B minor arpeggio w/ tapping
This is a fairly simple lick including a Gmaj7 arpeggio and a Bmin arpeggio. You will see the first one being a 5-string arppegio, starting on F#-note on 9th fret of the A string, but due to its notes, which are B, D, F#, G, it actually spells out an Gmaj7 chord and arpeggio - it resembles the Gmaj7/B. The 7th being the F#, though we are actually starting on this note. The root of the Gmaj7 arpeggio doesn't come in before we start to descend with the arpeggio - it is at the very top tapped on the 15th fret on the E string, which is the G note in the arpeggiated chord.
Following this we have a slide from the 12th fret on the B string, which is the note B, to the 15th fret, note D. From the slide we start to spell out the Bmin arpeggio. First note in this new bar is the B note, next D and then F#, which is the three notes give you the B minor chord. After these three notes we have some string skipping from the E string to the G string, where we once again state the B minor arpeggio by playing the notes B (16th fret, G string), D (15th fret, B string) and F# (14th fret, E string). From here on we have the same tapping sequence as with the first arpeggio. It may look intimidating, but it's an easy way to incorporate tapping into your arpeggio playing. Here's a small explanation:
Notice how I make a hammer on, pull off, then hammer on and THEN tap. This allows me to get my hand to the fret I want to tap without having to move my picking hand there lightning fast. Before going back to the sweep of the arpeggio I have a pull off, hammer on and pull off on the E string again. This allows me time enough to get my picking hand back at its proper place.
The rest of the lick is fairly easy, and you should be able to get it by following the tabs:
GMC
Here is my lick of 09jan
It is a melody a made a long time aga but now am able to tab it which makes it easer to use.
I think is called pavoting this technique.

Feedback is most welcome!!
Thanks Cael and Playaxeman
It's the 9th now can I post another one?
Sure
I do not stop surprising me friends! Excellent work!
Cmin descending legato lick
This lick is fairly simple once you get the hang of it, but the picking pattern between the legato-ing might be a bit tricky untill you get it. You will notice that it is fairly sequenced (except for the first three notes), so once you get the hand of the sequence, you should have no problem at all.
The lick utilizises all notes of the C minor scale, which are: C, D Eb, F, G, Ab, and Bb. The lick starts on G on the 8th fret of the B string and ends on the root note C on the 8th fret of the low E string.
Guys, we need more licks in order for me to actually being able to select licks each day! . The stock supplies are now more or less empty again
Come on and lets work on this cool database of member licks!
Thanks!
Roger
I'll do a few licks tonight then. I might just make a bunch and save them in my SI Lotd archive and upload one each day
Thanks guys, it's absolutely awesome that you are going to supply more licks, but I was indeed hoping to have a bit more contributions from other members on this forum.
I am 100% convinced that everybody has at least a couple of licks what he or she could share trough this initiative
A complex yet simple tapping lick
This is a fairly simple tapping lick once you get the hang of it. I must admit this is a fairly old tapping lick that I came up with years ago, so I had some difficulties myself. When coming up with this, I remember thinking I wanted to apply a melody in both hands, which ending up giving me a left hand going between notes C, D and Eb on the g-string, while the right hand taps the notes F, G, Ab and Bb higher up the neck on the G-string.
You could potentially develop this lick to have other numbers of tapped notes by your right hand or hammered on notes in your left hand. You could try having 7 notes by your right hand (instead of 10 as by me) and still keep playing the C, D and Eb notes in your left hand. You will notice something interesting in your left hand then, when your tapped melody starts over.
Thanks Ben!
Sorry about yesterday, I was unavailable to post a lick as me and my girlfriend were out celebrating our 2 year anniversary.

1-bar lick in G lydian (correct me if I'm wrong )
This is a simple run going from the 10th fret on the A string, note G to the 15th fret of of the B string, note D. It doesn't just go straight through the scale, but utilizes some different patterns to spice it up a bit. Notice how I don't use alternate picking, but ecomony picking for this.

Just out of curiosity, as I've been thinking about this these last couple of days. What is the definition of a lick? Length-wise etc?
Cool. I seem to prefer making shorter licks, as that is kinda what I can comprehend doing at the moment. (I don't know...I'm feeling a bit off beat at the moment concerning all.)
I will do a few tonight.
I was getting a bit frustrated with everything yesterday, as there was a big VERY important meeting today at work (currently going on) and everything had to be going 100% correct, and I have to make sure it does. Besides that I have about 23 to-do tasks. Now half way through the day, and half way through the 3 meetings today everything seems to be running smoothly, so I'm quite happy with that. However, yesterday, I fell asleep when I came home (or about 1½-2 hours after I came home) and I then woke up when it was about 8:15 in the evening, and I was sure it was morning and that I had slept too late and everything was very chaotic.
No more chatting it up and complaining now though. I will return to this thread with a few licks tonight.
Just listened to all SI licks so far.
You guys are doing great job, please don't stop with your contributions - I really enjoyed listening to your licks and creativity you showed
Here we have a Paul Gilbert style string skipping lick in E minor. It is really two licks but they sound good played one after the other. The first part is an F# diminished arpeggio, in 16th triplets, followed by an 8th note. I play the first string legato, the next alternate picking, and the final one legato. This is something Paul does quite a lot in his runs. The second part is an Em arpeggio, in 16th triplets, followed by an 8th note. I follow the same picking pattern as before. This lick sounds best played in the last bar of a chord progression.
Cool Matt, thanks for the contribution
Nice lick Matt. PG has some cool stuff!!
Sorry guys, but no video this time around.
A minor pentatonic lick across the neck
This lick is very much inspired by both Guthrie Govan and our very own Muris (jumping lessons). It's again a sequenced lick, which could actually be played in just your regular A-minor pentatonic position, but to spice things up I keep moving it up the neck. We end with a bend from G to A on the B-string.
Thanks mate
My pleasure. Might do a few more tonight.
I do hope for some more participants, as I don't want to be the only one keeping this one alive :-)
Ehehe.
I'm sure there are more people out there on GMC who has licks they could share. We just need to get it going, I think
I just came home now, and I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be able to record anything.
I don't mind you using your own licks, by the way :-)
Sorry for the vague description, Velvet. Feel free to add some more, if you want :-)
F#minor lick
This lick is built around a basic F#minor arpeggio, but has some notes that add various flavors to the chord. It uses slides and string skipping to make it a little more interesting.

"Up the neck with chords"-lick
This lick keeps moving upwards through add9-chords, first Dmadd9, then Fadd9, Gmadd9, then Bbadd9. You could continue this even further if you want to. The pattern has an arpeggio sound/feel to it, as it only uses the notes within those chords, but the picking pattern doesn't involve sweeping, but alternate picking.

I'm sorry about not having thrown in any licks the last couple of days. Have had a friend over untill yesterday. I promise I'll give you something tonight!
Screw the rules (sorry :-)), you're getting a few from me now while I'm at it, just to keep this baby going.
Power metal style-riff
A simple riff in D minor ending out with some more exotic licks including both D harmonic minor and C# diminished. All alternate picking, and notice the change from 4/4 to 7/8 in the fourth bar! Otherwise it's pretty simple.

My pleasure! I'll do a few more every day probably, if I'm allowed to. Just to build up your library
Sorry I dropped out for awhile Roger. I've been working on those collabs for Emir and Pedja and being a married dude I only have so many hours of "guitar time" a day. I'm done with the collabs now and have some new licks to start posting so I'll be back on the wagon and contributing regularly probably starting in the next couple of days. Thanks for working on this thread. Thanks to Ben and playaxeman for contributing as well.
