GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Time To Narrow My Focus.....gmc Overload!

Posted by: derper Feb 15 2012, 09:20 PM

Here's what I mean....

I'm still relatively "new" to GMC (joined in Nov). I absolutely LOVE it here!! But, I find myself becoming interested in so many lessons/workshops/riffs/exercises all at once!!

No more!! I've stared into the infinite abyss of awesome-ness that GMC and it's talented, hard-working instructors have to offer. Now, it's time to step back, and NARROW my focus to a few lessons at a time.

I'm certain I'm not the only one that has suffered from this "GMC overload" syndrome. And I don't mean I've been putting in too much time at GMC....that isn't possible (as long as you meet your other obligations in life, to keep the internet/electricity on!). It's more about "over-loading" myself with so many lessons and concepts at once.

For now, I will narrow my focus to the following....

-Finishing my Castlevania student lesson series, and getting the collab going!! (Dinaga, I just ordered my line 6 kb37 interface today, so I'll REALLY be able to take part in this collab!! No more crappy cam vids with "live" sound!!)

-Cosmin's "Antonia Vivaldi Winter" lesson

-My ever continuing quest to improve on Muris' "Country picking advanced" vid, as part of "Dinaga's INSANE lesson hunt" thread.

Then I'll move onto....

-Collabs!! I had to step back from them for a minute, in order to "narrow my focus", but I hope I can submit to Sinisa's Lydian Collab by the deadline, and also jump onboard Gabriel's Zeppelin Collab (2 Gabriels are better than 1!!) as well!

- improving sweep picking, with Alex Feather's tips from last week's video chat (I hope there end up being some notes, otherwise I may need a quick "refresher" on that pentatonic sweep practice riff you discussed)

-Perhaps Cosmin's "Guthrie Govan Arpeggios"

-Incorporate the "modal madness" lesson into my practice/warmup routine

-Work on my country chops!

-Work on some "shreddy" lessons. I'm not much of a metal player, so I'd like to "up my game" in that respect.

And to help "narrow my focus", I'll spend slightly less time in the forum. Just a little less.

Now....Go practice!! laugh.gif

Yep, definately happened to me too.. Just needed to step back and focus on one lesson and one collab.. That's enough for me, don't want to get burned out!

Wow ! Huge tasks smile.gif, don't get lost in all this. Make priorities, and stick to them .That requires hard work but you'll succeed, I am sure wink.gif

Whoaa dude...you are one heavy practicing machine if you make them happen! Rock n roooll biggrin.gif

Yes, you've already diagnosed your own problem.. so narrowing your focus is the answer !

That's why Ninjas have these narrow eye holes to look through... a constant reminder to narrow our focus...

Oh yes that lesson tongue.gif
I didnt remember it so I clicked the first video and watched he go through is slowly.
He did go through it slowly, but not that slow. And I thought, doesnt it end soon? well it did..
after 28 seconds, then he played all that in 4 seconds xD

Yeah, it might seem like a lot of notes, but those shapes are invaluable! You can then use them for improv. smile.gif Definately worth the effort.

I know exactly what you mean. It happens to me too. I salute your decision to narrow it down and I agree it's the best way to improve your playing! It's better to one or two things properly than 10 things wrong.

And congrats for the interface, looking forward to your collabs and VGM lessons man! biggrin.gif

Yes, I too, have dealt with "GMC Overload Syndrome"! It is certainly understandable with all GMC has to offer & all the different areas of guitar study. I never realized just how many different aspects there were to the guitar. But this a great reminder to all of us about the need to focus. smile.gif

Ha!! Yeah....unfortunately I've had to "work" at work a few times this week. Next week, 2 gigs and 2 days of work at a "home and garden show" (aka: day with the boss, and NO GUITAR!! ohmy.gif ) which is bringing me off of a few things I wanted to work on.

And I'm actually better at slacking, than anything!! cool.gif

Thanks Alex!! This is certainly something I'll be working on in March, fairly heavily. After all....it's not a "weak point", it's just a technique I haven't spent focused time and energy yet, in order to improve. I can, and will, improve on my sweep picking very soon thanks to your notes!! I'm sure there are PLENTY of lessons here also, but like chicken pickin' I think it helps to start basic and with a more familiar shape.
