GMC Forum _ Competitions _ Ivan Milenkovic Instructor Week Competition! :)

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 18 2009, 06:14 PM

Hey hey guys, welcome to my competition, featured in my first instructor week here on GMC. As you know this week I am doing a blues theme, and this competition is no exception! cool.gif

Here's the deal: wink.gif

- Deadline is 28th or April (I will stretch it if needed of course) smile.gif
- No official sign ups (as soon as you post your finished blues song it will count as a sign up)
- Download the backing track that I've made and make a blues song out of it!

A word about the backing:

- Standard 12 bar blues progression from E, 100bpm tempo
- Only drum and bass tracks are in the track
- Drum track is simple shuffled rhythm
- Bass track is simple shuffled rhythm using only roots.
- The 12 bar blues is repeated 3x during this small song

You are free to add anything you like to this in order to finish this short tune, the more you add the better can be (example: guitar rhythm, guitar lead, vocals, organ, piano, brass, harp, whatever!)
Since it has only 3 repeated 12 bar frames, you have a limited time to express everything you want, so use all your knowledge about blues and other music styles to make it as interesting as possible! smile.gif

And of course the prizes for the best blues composers are appropriate! cool.gif

FIRST PRIZE:

BOSS BLUES DRIVER BD2
The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver guitar effects pedal delivers that creamy-yet-crunchy sound you've heard countless great blues guitar players call up - and at a great value! The BD-2 Blues Driver simulates the sound of a vintage tube amplifier, giving you instant access to timeless tones. It also responds to your playing dynamics, so you can pull out a range of tones to give each note the perfect flavor and feel. All in all, you'll love the warm overdrive and emotive distortion the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver adds to your rig. Over 10,000,000 sold!

SECOND PRIZE:

3 SETS OF DEAN MARKLEY "BLUE STEEL" ELECTRIC GUITAR STRINGS

Blue Steel™ are the world's first and finest Cryogenic- processed strings. That's right, this is the one everyone's been talking about. Blue Steel™ strings are a total breakthrough in string technology. Starting with the very finest quality materials, Blue Steel™ strings are frozen to minus 320 degrees Fahrenheit, held there for an exact period of time and then slowly and carefully brought back to their original temperature. This unique Cryogenic treatment realigns the molecular structure of the string, giving Blue Steel more highs and lows, a longer life and greater ability to stay in tune. It's simply amazing what a little -320º liquid nitrogen can do to a guitar string. Put on a set and see what all the noise is about. Twice the tone and twice the life.

THIRD PRIZE:

FUNK/ROCK ALBUM "IN THE MOOD" OF MY BAND "ANGRY PAPRIKAS" (FEATURING ME AND INSTRUCTOR BOGDAN!)

This album contains author material on our native language (Serbian), and although you may not understand the lyrics, I hope you enjoy our music! smile.gif

Wohoo, cool prizes. biggrin.gif I´ll give my best to submit a finished song.

Is it possible to make the bass louder? I can´t hear it. laugh.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 18 2009, 07:05 PM

You want me to turn it down? (it is a little loud) smile.gif

No, up. laugh.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 18 2009, 07:24 PM

OK, I added one more track, let me know if you need me to raise lower (I get a lot of bass on my speakers so I can't be sure if it's right) smile.gif

Posted by: berko Apr 18 2009, 07:28 PM

The bass is quite loud originally! But it's fine for me... Great stuff, I'll dive into this one smile.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 18 2009, 07:42 PM

Yeah, I think it's a bit loud as well, I compressed it a bit to accent the roots. If you want I can make a third non-loud bass track version biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tolek Apr 18 2009, 07:44 PM

Yes, that´s much better! Thanks very much. smile.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 18 2009, 07:54 PM

OK mate, no problem smile.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Apr 18 2009, 07:59 PM

Well of course, blues in general is a very happy music believe it or not smile.gif You can use any kind of chords to accent a certain mood, it all depends what you want to do. If we stick to regular triads there are 4 options:

major - "happy" feel
minor - "sad" feel
diminished - "unknown, secret" feel
augmented - "misty, enchanted" feel

also you can use regular dominant chords to accent the minor 7th note that is characteristic for the blues. It is very common to mix major and dominant chords within 12 bar blues, specially in traditional styles.

Sure mate, good idea! Added in the first post! smile.gif

The quality of drums and bass itself won't affect the final outcome tho, so everybody has a fair chance! smile.gif

However audio should be enough for those who want to participate. Video will not affect my decision.

Posted by: stevie ray hey hey hey Apr 21 2009, 03:01 AM

wow man, this is pretty weird for me...

I just tried some words I wrote down I recorded it, I also tried out some guitar ideas I had, and it sounds fantastic ... I didn't even think it would be that good.. it was pretty much a joke what I was gonna do to learn to know the song a little... but man, you're really gonna love this.

nighttime again, almost morning ...

A VERY COOL COMPETITION
I like looping things

my singing is weird really

Posted by: skennington Apr 21 2009, 06:23 AM

Guess I'll be the first Ivan to upload.. biggrin.gif Remember the old smokey bar collab? Well, I tried to create it in a way and hope you like it my friend. You are truly an inspiration around here! smile.gif You might here some Wallimann licks in here.... tongue.gif

laugh.gif Great idea man! You sure created an awesome club-like atmosphere on this one - seems like live show! Very very good! smile.gif

Skenny made a great track, and since he was the bravest (and fastest) to upload his take first, this means that he now has a right for the first prize! Boss pedal (and you cannot ever have too many Boss pedals cool.gif ) is in his hands at the moment, unless somebody makes a move smile.gif
Let's hear some more takes guys, so we can turn this into a full scale competition! I can already see that this is gonna be fun! biggrin.gif

Cool take man!! smile.gif Sounds like I'm listening to the gig from the hallway in front of the club! smile.gif Very creative thinking with these blues songs so far! smile.gif

Posted by: sted Apr 22 2009, 08:05 PM

Here be mine!!

I was listening to (The great) Peter Green's "Stumble" and thought an all instrumental track might be nice, so here it is!
the first guitar slide piece is in open E on a 335 replica, the secong and third were on my strat in standard tuning and the rythym on my Les Paul.

I went for a old blues feel for the first part, SRV for the second and a Gary Moore style for the end.

I may develop this and add some lyrics, any restriction on number of entries Ivan???

Hope you like it!

PS: didnt mean that little dink just before the end but thought it sounded cool!!

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 22 2009, 09:34 PM

Awesome takes Deleted and sted, excellent stuff! It's very cool to listen your ideas, and you managed to refresh that simple track and make it your own style! smile.gif

A little added motivation for Blues week. This is Jake, a 13 year old from my area here in the US. Check him out. Also, great takes by you guys.. smile.gif

thanks smile.gif but fast solos mean nothing with out a good melody or medlodic line to back them up....a slower solo will always beat a fast shreddy solo emotionaly which is why i like to combind both smile.gif'

i liked your take very much as well smile.gif

I decided to give this a try when I saw this thread yesterday.
It became something of a theme melody more than a solo really.
