Creative Inspiration, Or lack thereof...

Hey guys,

I have been playing off and on now for about 12 years and have been with GMC now for almost two months. I find the lessons here very helpful and can see myself improving greatly. Lately though I have been having a problem with a feeling of lack of creativity. I mean, after every practice session, I will try to write my own riffs/songs but sometime I think that I could never write something that makes someone else go "Man, that was awesome, I got chills from that." Do you think that the more someone progresses in knowledge of music that the better they would get creatively or is being an artist something that you have inside and if you don't have it, you don't have it?

A good friend of mine that I grew up with (and jammed with) went on to form his own band and I guess I have been feeling regret for not pursuing it with more passion then. I have been feeling an itch lately to start/join a band but now that I am almost 29 I have been feeling lately that it is too late for me.

Anyway, any insight would be helpful.

Thank you fellow GMC'ers.

I'm 37 and called a few of guys together only last year for a new band. I knew them since before and I knew they were not active in any band atm so it was pretty easy to fire em up laugh.gif
So you have plenty of time, It's never too late really, just find a couple of ppl in your situation, I promise you that you're not alone at ~30 thinking it would be fun to be in a band.

For creativity, what works for me is to go see a live show, and I don't mean to go see Toto but to the pub and watch a cover band. That's inspiring to me. Rather than watching Toto and going "that Lukather is amazing" you can watch the cover band and say "I can do that".

About writing songs yeah... I never managed to make songs that are likely to hit the charts either, I feel like you that there's a lack of - woah!!!! - in em.
But I guess presenting them to either of the bands I'm in, depending on the songs genre, and letting they add their stuff, color it with what they do best, would improve it. I've tried but at that time the drummer had hit rock bottom so my timing couldn't have been worse. I will try again soon though.
I mean, I don't expect myself to add drums better than our drummer, or a bass better than our bass player etc. so what I archive on my own is just a base for something to improve. cool.gif

No, I think the more someone progresses in knowledge of music, the more they're likely to say "I can't be creative". Everything will seem too simple, too cliched, too similar to some favorite song of yours, but with less oomph smile.gif You'll pick it apart more than you do with any music you hear from others. You'll probably need a few "impartial" people to tell you it's good, before you figure out that it doesn't suck. Was that way for me, at least - both writing classical pieces and rock stuff smile.gif There's no more "natural talent" to composing than their is to playing an instrument. It's still about practice.

Also, on guitar that's really written for a band, it's very much about collaboration. Most rock songs (other than some very classic "anthems") will sound "simple" until they're combined with the other instruments - and don't expect to come up with great drumming, bass playing, singing, keyboard playing - whatever - at first, if you don't play the instrument (well) yourself - pretty much like MickeM said. (Then again, violin concertos by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and Beethoven were all deemed "unplayable" by the violinist they were dedicated to - they're all famous works to this day)

I'm 29. Started a band a couple of years ago (singing rather than guitar, though - which I'm just learning). It's never "too late". A guitarist friend of mine is around 40 and plays in a band, as well as guest appearing in other bands (usually dragged up on stage whenever we go to see someone). Far from famous, so that's not the "excuse" for being in a band at 40... Why would 29 be too late anyway? Because one is supposed to start being boring? Then I'd rather be the sorry excuse for a 29-year-old tongue.gif

I find that when I come up with riffs or songs that are a bit dull or generic, I am usuall trying too hard.
When I just sit down and simply play something. Anything. Maybe I will just strum a chord in a certain way and then it will feel like a note has to come after it, then I play a note that sounds like I imagine it in my head. That is when I feel that I've made something worthwhile.

Maybe if I'm tired or feeling a certain way, the song will shape itself according to this.
Once I've got something, it may only be very simple, but if I can play it in a way that recreates the emotions that I was feeling at the time then it is special. And as someone said, once you start to play with other instruments like drums or bass then that something simple can become something great.

So in other words, don't try too hard! If you feel like you're in a rut then just take a break. Take your mind of the guitar. Maybe listen to some of your favourite music or whatever and then when you come back to the guitar, just play anything and see where it goes from there.

I think of being creative is not thinking about it......thinking about it will make it 2 logical i guess you could say..because if you tink about it..then it will be like..this "ok well i play this note.and now umm i need to play this note....adn then i need to play this note", but when not thinking about its like "bumbubmbubmbidifjdbumbisjopdfsabumbibmjpad", kinda get what im saying here....hmm i stil think its all about personal preference.becuase even when im not thinking i am...hmmm doesnt sound right does it.....but it does when you put it into play......say you jsut play a few notes..not thinking about it..and you just use that as your base..then you thinik about it for a second while still playing.a.nd think..well hey..i can add this lick in there and that lick is runing through your mind..nto thinkting though of wha tyour playing..then you put that lick into what your playing...then you go back the base...then think about another lick..........BUT STILL dont think about what your doing with your fingers..think about..hmm..well i can add this in..........adn then try it out.....if it doesnt work out then..well just keep playing that same thing NEVER STOP PLAYING........adn then just think ok well im not gonna add that......adn then switch and play another lick your thinking of......kinda get what im saying here lol....i guess how i explained it is just my improvising..YOU THINK ABOUT IT, BUT YOU DONT THINK ABOUT IT........after you play for a while...and mess around and got some licks down..and some runs..and know how to put this and that together..then well..you will get more creative..........hmm..i guess i could also say that, you could just feel it...somedays you wont feel nothign.but others...i all i have to say about my creativity on those days is WOW......and also....study other players...that helps 2 biggrin.gif....hmm lol thats kind aconfusing ayeeeeeeeeee

Thanks for the input guys. Thank makes sense. I think I am thinking about it too much and should relax more and just try to have fun with it. This is a great community here and I am glad to be a part of it.

Peace.
