I'm 37 and called a few of guys together only last year for a new band. I knew them since before and I knew they were not active in any band atm so it was pretty easy to fire em up
So you have plenty of time, It's never too late really, just find a couple of ppl in your situation, I promise you that you're not alone at ~30 thinking it would be fun to be in a band. For creativity, what works for me is to go see a live show, and I don't mean to go see Toto but to the pub and watch a cover band. That's inspiring to me. Rather than watching Toto and going "that Lukather is amazing" you can watch the cover band and say "I can do that". About writing songs yeah... I never managed to make songs that are likely to hit the charts either, I feel like you that there's a lack of - woah!!!! - in em. But I guess presenting them to either of the bands I'm in, depending on the songs genre, and letting they add their stuff, color it with what they do best, would improve it. I've tried but at that time the drummer had hit rock bottom so my timing couldn't have been worse. I will try again soon though. I mean, I don't expect myself to add drums better than our drummer, or a bass better than our bass player etc. so what I archive on my own is just a base for something to improve. -------------------- My bands homepage

I find that when I come up with riffs or songs that are a bit dull or generic, I am usuall trying too hard.
When I just sit down and simply play something. Anything. Maybe I will just strum a chord in a certain way and then it will feel like a note has to come after it, then I play a note that sounds like I imagine it in my head. That is when I feel that I've made something worthwhile. Maybe if I'm tired or feeling a certain way, the song will shape itself according to this. Once I've got something, it may only be very simple, but if I can play it in a way that recreates the emotions that I was feeling at the time then it is special. And as someone said, once you start to play with other instruments like drums or bass then that something simple can become something great. So in other words, don't try too hard! If you feel like you're in a rut then just take a break. Take your mind of the guitar. Maybe listen to some of your favourite music or whatever and then when you come back to the guitar, just play anything and see where it goes from there.
