I do a number of things:

Scale of - for instance - Cmajor in different positions on the neck.
In one position on neck all major/minor scales.
Any scale played as alt picking, legato, intervallic patterns, different finger combinations.

Usually play the single scale in multiple positions over recorded chord vamps to try to get used to what the scale sounds like over particular chords/progressions.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Tony

- Practice the scales around the neck
- Always start from the Root Note when Practicing
- When writing/improvising you dont need to start from the root note
- Try Alt. Picking when practicing scales, that way you're practicing 2 things at the same time.

You could start practicing Pentatonic Scales found on the 101 lessons:

Pentatonic Scale Position Shifting Lesson You can learn 2 scale boxes here and learn to shift between them

Pentatonic Scale Horizontal Position Shifting Learn 5 Am Pentatonic Boxes and how to shift between them
