Well Steve we don’t need to have a big introduction kind of thing because we already have become friends through the forum. I am obviously very excited about our match up and hope you are as well. Right now I just want to wait on the syllabus that should be posted soon and look that over. I will come up with a game plan for us and we can discuss it from there.
A few things I want us both to get out of this if nothing else is to have a whole lot of fun, show you what a great player you can become and develop a good honest friendship built on trust. I will always back up my reasons with truths and won’t mislead you in any way. If we can do this then we both win even if the end result is I don’t get help from Muris. All I ask is you take this time to do something for you. I know your really busy with GMC and your family at home but you need to dedicate some time for you my friend. This is about your playing not mine. You will be very surprised with your results in the end.
Welcome, come on in and please wipe your feet.
Damn, how did I miss this... feet wiped and ready to cook my friend! I'm very pleased to be paired up with you Jeff. You have a lot of knowledge to offer and I'm certainly ready to take it all in. I think that this is going to be quite cool!
Very cool bro! I’m glad you’re pleased. FYI, my dogs chewed your shoes up. I told you not to leave them up by the kitchen. They get hungry when I'm cooking and thought those were some treats .
No worries man, I have several pair...I see the syllabus is up. I'll wait to see what direction you want to take and then discuss. Thought I'd paste it here for easy reference...
Syllabus Guide For the Beginners Mentored Training Program
Hey Steve I just got home from work and went over the syllabus. Thanks for coping it in here.
I would like you to do the suggested exercise for week one. Please post the video asap. Along with the video I want you to post the name of the chords you played and the notes that make that chord. I'm sure you won't have any problems. The sooner you do this and I am comfortable that you can play these basic chord shapes clean the better. I will probably give you another lesson this week as well I just need a minute to find it. Also if you have a suggestion of another lesson you like that will fit the category let me know.
I'll post again in a while with a few questions and some ideas for use to discuss.
Have fun
Cool man, will do..That friggin F chord still aggravates me so this will be a good lesson. I'll get on it!
I have a few questions for you that will help me customize this to fit you. So when you get a chance please think about them and shoot me a reply.
1.) Who are a few of your favorite bands?
2.) If you got up tomorrow and could play anything on the guitar you wanted (songs, guitar solos or licks) what would you play?
3.) What do you think playing wise are your strongest points right now?
4.) What do you think playing wise are your weakest and would like to improve?
5.) What are your playing goals for yourself 3 months from now?
6.) What are your playing goals 6 months from now?
7.) What are your playing goals 1 year from now on your 2year GMC anniversary?
If you have any questions for me please feel free to ask.
Hum..Good questions man. Let's see....
1.) Who are a few of your favorite bands? (old school) Dokken, Ratt, Savatage, Maiden, Metallica, Crue, this list could get lengthy . (today) Three days Grace, 3 doors Down, Disturbed, Crossfade, etc..
2.) If you got up tomorrow and could play anything on the guitar you wanted (songs, guitar solos or licks) what would you play? Final Dance, Muris Varajic..The melody line, the technique involved, awesome!
3.) What do you think playing wise are your strongest points right now? Rhythm and power chords
4.) What do you think playing wise are your weakest and would like to improve? Everything else..
5.) What are your playing goals for yourself 3 months from now? Improve my Alternate Picking, Tapping and Legato
6.) What are your playing goals 6 months from now? To be able to use these skills in my improvisation
7.) What are your playing goals 1 year from now on your 2year GMC anniversary? Simply put, to be better than I am now.
If you have any questions for me please feel free to ask.
OK, I will..
Looks like you guys will have lots of fun
I really like where MTP is going , can't wait to see some videos
Ok Steve, here are the answers to your questions sir. Now where is my lesson??
How long have you been playing?
Well I started I think at about 13yrs old and played for a few years. Noodled around and tried to teach myself some songs using an old record player my grandmother gave me. We couldn't afford lessons. I could play some AC/DC songs, Heart, 1 or 2 from Rush. Mostly just rhythm stuff. Parents got divorced and I put the guitar down till I was 18. Started playing more serious at that point. I was working and on my own and couldn't pay for lessons either. So I made a bunch of friends that could play and I would just watch and learn from that. Then I would go home and get my tape player out and work on songs. About 8 years later I made a decision to put the guitar down and go to a local college to get an education and a better job. Well that worked out pretty good and now I have a life and a wonderful family that supports me. So a little over 1 year ago I decided I needed to find out how good I could become and then I found GMC. Now you’re stuck with me.
What's your favorite style..Blues,Rock,Metal...?
Well I really like big hair 80's stuff because that’s what I grew up with. Honestly though I love all types of music and listen to what ever I am in the mood for. Well except rape and disco stuff.
Who do you feel, out of accomplished guitarist, has the best tone?
Tough one. I think all accomplished guitar players half to have a great tone. That’s why we buy their CD's. A few of my favorites are Muris, Satriani, SRV and Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola to name a few.
Also to you, If you could wake up in the morning and play anything, what would it be?
I would just like to wake up and be able to improv or write something like Muris or Satriani.
Your Favorite band/artist?
Mostly guitar centered music. The same artists that I listed above.
What are your goals here at GMC?
Well to help you of course. I need to learn a better variety of technique and some theory stuff so I can put it all together better. I also would like to become more involved with GMC and helping others in some way.
What would you most like to accomplish out of this program?
Honestly if my experiences and playing can make a difference to you or any other player here then I would be happy. The more players the better of course. I just want to be a part of something that involves music. If I can get someone to help me in the process well then that is a bonus.
If you were my personal instructor locally, what would be the one thing you have me do daily so to never forget?
Take a shower and brush your teeth.
If you were my personal instructor locally, what would be the one thing you have me do daily so to never forget?
Take a shower and brush your teeth.
Now that gave me a good laugh man!
I'm working on the chords lesson but I just can't believe how I have let the foundation slip by me. This is really the first time I have sat down and focused on a chord structure (that's not power chords). I'm sure I'll have it down by tomorrow, If I can't nail the F barre, I'll just repeat the D or something.
Thanks again for helping me bro!
Hi Steve,
I have put a lot of thought into our game plan for the next several weeks. I am listing 3 lessons below and I would like you to either choose one you like or give me a suggestion of something else. If you choose something else I want it to focus on the same areas as these do.
What I feel we need to work on right now are different chord types and phrasings, being able to move around the neck smooth using them, muting technique and we need to free up your right hand from using down strokes so much. If we can focus on these areas it will make you a stronger rhythm player.
Personally I would like to see you tackle Marcus Siepen if you feel up to it.
Marcus Siepen

Joe Kataldo

Gabriel Leopardi
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/open-chords-rock-rhythm/
Please give me some feedback and let me know how your progressing with your current lesson.
Working on the current lesson now and I must say in all it's simplicity, I'm having trouble with it. For all who reads this, DON'T fall into a trap of not practicing regular chords. This is really the first time I have sat down and practiced basic chords and I'm a bit angry at myself for not doing so sooner.
These are the basics and should not be taken lightly as I have. I will have a look at those lessons suggested Jeff but to be honest, If all I get out of this program is to catch up on these chord shapes and be able to transition smoothly, I will be completely satisfied.
I'll upload a video shortly to show you where I am having trouble... Thanks for your patience with my shortcomings.
Well first of all you shouldn’t be mad at yourself. The syllabus was designed for this specific purpose. Now we know that this is something we need to work on lets move on. If it takes you 4 weeks to play this perfect, then that’s what it takes. As long as you’re putting in the effort it’s all good.
This competition for the lack of a better term is not about turning someone into Steve Via in a week. There are many different levels of beginners yet we all start from the same place and have to learn these same basic building blocks. If you ask any guitar player here about the first time they had to learn these cords I bet they would all relate to how difficult and frustrating it was at times. If they say anything else then they are lying to you.
I want you to continue to work on this exercise and please post me an example of you playing ASAP. What I’m going to do is come up with a practice routine for you covering all aspects of the syllabus. I don’t want you getting board and having several lessons to work on will help you become a better player quicker while having more fun.
I am here for one reason and that is to help you. As I have told you before it doesn’t matter to me about winning or losing this. If all this MTP was just about who could make the best player in one month then I would rather lose (or quit) and stay here helping you.
I will get you through this so don’t you quit on yourself.
Thanks for the encouragement man, means a lot bro and I'm glad that you are looking at this the way you are. I will honestly will put forth all the effort that my time allows and will get this down for sure. I will get you a video asap so you can point out the good and the bad. I know that without seeing, you are setting their feeling a little helpless but I need to be able to show you the whole lesson and like you said, not just a part of it.
Panthers lost dude. Whats up with that? I thought they would rule for sure.
Hey Jeff,
Man I certainly apologize that I have not got anything up for you yet. These chords are actually wearing on me a bit. I want to get this lesson down just so you know that. I have been practicing it as much as time allows and if I'm holding my guitar, I'm on this lesson.
I just can't seem to get my fingers to act right.. Like I told you before, good thing I got to this lesson through the MTP program or I probably still would have ignored the basic's. Now, back to working on it.....
That's cool man. I know your working hard. Maybe instead of playing with the backing track you can just play the chords in order till you get use to the fingerings. Also if it's just the F chord that is the problem then just work with that change. What is it Dm7 to F or something? I'm not looking at the lesson.
I think it is also a good idea for us to work on other things while still working on this. In my previous post I listed some other rhythm lessons. What do you think about the one by Joe Kataldo? I would like to see you work on this also. You need to mix things up and give yourself a break once in a while. Joe's lesson has a great rock feel and also a small beginer lead.
Yes, it's a Dm > F > G. I'd be lying if I said the G wasn't aggravating me as well. I'll start working on Joe's lesson as well and mix it up between the two for a while. I'm not getting frustrated at all so don't think that, just a bit ticked at myself for not having gone through this before...
Working on Joe's lesson will get your mind of the other one. When you’re ticked off at yourself it creates tension in your hands and fingers making thing harder and not productive. Trust me on this one. I have been there and so has everyone else.
Let me know what you think and how you’re progressing with Joe's lesson. Have some fun with it
I'm here when you need me
Thanks man..I'll check it out here shortly
Hey Steve, hows everything going? Just wanted to say hi and see if there is anything I need to do for you at this point. I am also curious, have you had time to check out Joe's lesson and if so what your thoughts are.
Hope all is well
finally getting a little play time tonight.. Been working on Joe's lesson for the last hour or so and I like it. I haven't got the solo at the end yet but shouldn't be a problem. I'm uploading a take of the rhythm section now to youtube. Should be up in a minute.
I warn you though, poor light and a monitor mic = BAD quality so I hope you can even see an hear it..
Here you go man, like I said, very poor render but I think you'll be able to hear it. The light sucks in my spare bedroom..
I will look at it right away Just give me a few minutes.
Ok Steve here you go bro. I am going to break this down into 2 basic sections, “Good Points” and “Things I want you to work on”. Cool?
First I want to say overall this tack so far is really good and I am very happy with what I see.
Good Points:
You can play with rhythm and your timing is good.
I really like how your working on your right hand muting (very good) and getting your right hand moving in an alternate way instead of just down strokes. Great job!
Right hand looks like it is getting more relaxed.
You played the chords clean and I could hear everything (well considering it was YouTube).
Your left hand is moving good and you fingered all the chords without problems. Excellent work! Your fingers should feel like they are behaving more like you want them to now.
Things I want you to work on:
Think about your left hand. Go back and look at your video compared to Joe’s. Your hand looks cramped up like a claw (for the lack of a better term. Please forgive me and just let me try to make my point). Rotate your arm and wrist a little more clockwise or to the right and roll your thumb back under the neck. Let your 2nd and 3rd fingers stretch out like his. This will help you move bar chords quicker, be more comfortable and give you another way to mute string noise when you need to.
You missed playing the full E5 chord also. If you hit this it will give you a bigger sound.
The last note you picked which was a ‘G’ on the 3rd fret of the ‘E’ string was done with your index finger. It should be done with your middle finger. This is very important not just for this jam but for technique in general. Your middle finger was right there so use it. If you had to play a ‘G’ chord there you couldn’t because your fingering isn’t correct and you would trip over your middle finger. I hope that makes some sense. Your kind of reaching over your middle finger with your index finger.
Very good work! We will get to the solo stuff soon so no worries. Right now if you can work on what I am asking you to and get another recording done that would be great. Just like a collab. Then we will add you solo later. Sound good?
EDIT: 2nd comment in the things I want you to work on. E5 chord you missed.
Thanks Jeff and your absolutely right. My left hand does look like a claw.. I'll work on relaxing it a bit and rotating more toward the face of the neck. I actually found that with the "F barre'" in the other lesson that it was much easier. Still haven't quite got it but closer..
I'll keep working and get you another take on this lesson along with the solo..
I'm quite happy as well to see my right hand actually going in a different direction.. Thanks for suggesting Joe's lesson! Not hard, but get's you moving around a little bit and makes you focus on both hands. Exactly what I needed man..
Thanks again bro for your time!
I'm glad you like it (Joe's lesson) Please check out the edit I made in my post above if you haven't already.
Maybe fixing the claw thing will help with the other lesson as well
Cheerio mate!
I noticed your edit after I posted and yes, I did miss that E5 and I knew it.. I'll get it, no worries Don't bash the claw.. He will find you..
Your a Super Hero man!
BEWARE OF THE CLAW.......
The claw is back... Here's a little run at the solo of Joe's lesson....
THE CLAW ROCKS!! I am very pleased with this for a 1st take. It was in time, sounded good and you looked relaxed. Keep working on this. There are a few small issues that we will address but I am very pleased with your upload and the effort you are putting in Steve.
Your doing great! Very well done!
Thanks man. I spent about 30 minutes or so practicing it before recording the video. I think I know a few of the issues and if you don't mind, I would like to point them out to see if I'm recognizing on my own..
You got it Steve. Your right It's very good that you can point out these things and you are willing to work on them.
2 other things I want to point out are:
On the first bend use your 3rd finger and not your 2nd. Also be careful because it isn't a real big bend and you don't want it to be pitchy.
Second thing is really try to add those slides in there that he does to get to some of the notes. Watch the lesson and you'll know what I'm talking about. This will add some SPICE to it.
This weekend I want you to submit all of your final videos for week one. Mirus's lesson, the ryhthm and the solo for Joe's.
Your doing great man
Here's the latest on Joe's lesson. The first is the small lead section. I think the bend is still a bit pitchy but look at the right hand, going both way's! Hell yeah!
And here is the rhythm section...Seems to be a bit better..
And now I'm off to strumming.....
Looks good bro! I will wait on comments till you upload your last take of Mirus's lesson. That way everything for week one is together.
Strum away!
What's up Jeff,
I have here and all it's glory, a take on the Strumming and Arpeggio's lesson. I went through about 20 takes @ 50bpm and chose to give you the worst one so you can see where I'm really at with it which is nowhere... I promise that by the end of this 4 week period, I will have this lesson at 100bpm..
Oh and forgive me for the bit at the end, I forgot to trim that off.. I warn you, it is not pretty and this should be the first lesson completed by a beginner...Mandatory GMC Regulations!
Just dropping by to see what's on the agenda Jeff...
Sorry for the delay Steve. It’s has been a crazy weekend and my son and I are sharing a bad cold together.
Joe’s Lesson:
You did a great job with this and it’s very cool to see that right hand moving. You looked very relaxed. Your left hand looks more comfortable also and you used your 2nd finger to hit the ‘G’ note. Well done man! We will fix the bending stuff in solo soon with a different lesson.
Muris Lesson:
It still needs work but I don’t think it is as bad as you think. A week ago was the 1st time you have played these types of chords. Keep working on it. Every week I want you to post your progress with this. I will find you a lesson with full bar chords and that should help you with the dreaded ‘F’ chord problem.
Thanks for your hard work this 1st week. You have made some great progress and I hope you feel the same.
I will post back later with you next assignment. "As I blow my nose."
Ok here is the rhythm lesson I would like you to work on for this week.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/in-the-style-of-black-sabbath/
Once you look at it you will understand why I picked it. It's all full barre chords and moving that shape around. This should help you nail the 'F' in the other lesson.
What do you think?
Sure man, I'm willing to work on whatever you feel will help me. I trust you bro. However, Eb, gonna use my Agile for this one. I need to get more comfortable with it anyway..
Your Agile is more Black Sabbath like anyways. Will this be enough work for you this week?
Yes, Yes and oh, did I say yes... Seriously, I want to still keep working hard on the Arpeggio lesson as well, so with the two combined, I think it will take up most of the time that I do have. I also don't want to try and focus on too much at one time and only learn part's of each if that makes since.
What's your thought's, should I push harder?
I thought you may have enough to work on. Just thought I would ask. I was trying to get a feel for how challenging this weeks lesson was going to be for you.
Hey Jeff,
Here's a little teaser of Marcus' lesson. Some timing issues to iron out and before you bark at me, I'm working on the right hand...
EDIT while playing, On the far right bottom of the player, hit the ^ button and select HQ
I love the pants you have on!! You get extra credit for that man!
Looks like your having fun with this and your Agile (Les Paul copy) looks great bro!
Sounds really good so far but please, I really want you to focus on your left hand with this lesson. I have to give you good advise right
Play the FULL bar chords as he shows you please. He uses the 1st, 3rd and 4th finger (pinky) for some of the chords and this is really important bro. Also you need to relax your thumb and allow your 1st finger to lay flat across the neck on the bar chords. Get your elbow off your left leg and sit up straight. That will help.
What you uploaded sounds almost like the lesson and I am very honored to be your friend and mentor. Thanks man this made my day.
Cheerio
Just for the record...The pants are flannel lounge pants and not some 80's spandex like they look...
I will work on your comments Jeff. I'm still a bit shaky with the lesson so I hope have it tightened up by the weekend. Just wanted to let you know that I'm working.
These Pauls are a tone of weight, hence the strap and my posture. So use to the weight of the Jackson that I feel like I'm holding 2 guitars...
Don't be shakey with the lesson!!!! Be confident when you play!! You know what you need to do.
You're doing great man! I am very proud of you I'm sure you will have a great take by this weekend, just relax and enjoy the ride.
Sorry about that Steve. I had no idea that was missing from the backing. As you know I don't have access to any of that at this time. I appreciate you wanting to put in the extra effort to figure it out. If you need help just ask and I'll figure it out and help. If your going to do all of this maybe we should have 2 seperate uploads for this lesson. One with you recording yourself playing just all the rhythm then another with you just playing the solo over your own backing rhytm track. I'm sure Marcus would send you the backing track so you could mix everything good. What do you think? We could count this a week 2 and 3 combined if you get it all done. Maybe you could have the next week off and do whatever you want. We can work something out.
Yeah man, I'd actually like to try and complete this whole lesson. I will PM Marcus although I'm sure he is quite busy with BG. If he gives me the ok, I think I can make it happen.. May need a few extra days though..
I'm sure you will do fine and let me know if I can help bro. If you can't play full spead that's cool. I really would like you to focus on being perfect if that makes sence (chords and fingering right). If you can't play up to his tempo I am fine with that. We want quality with this OK!
Get to work and earn your vacation bro
Hey Jeff, Can you open the GP file for the sabbath lesson? I've got a question to ask you. Look at bar's 37 and 38 and watch the main vid. I see where he slides from first fret but not where he goes back to it if that makes sense. Looks like this..
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------3--4--3--4--6--4--3--2----
----1--3--4--3--4--6--4--3--4--3-----------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tell me if I'm right here...
Sorry Steve I can't access anything.
If that is the tab above and you can give me a time segment to watch from the main video them I could probably help.
Thanks for your patients
Hmm..The section I'm talking about is 1:01-1:07. In the main vid he plays it as tabbed. But in the 6th vid, he plays it as I have tabbed, or close to it.. I'll try and figure it out man.. Thanks bro!
Well now I feel worthless
Just play which everone sounds best to you and let me know which one you decided. I will comment based on that.
Just wanted to check in and see how things where coming along. We got 6 inches of snow over night so I stayed home with my son today. Did you get your issue with video 6 figured out? When do you thinks you will be uploading this weeks lesson?
Snow day, lucky you...We can't get snow down this way for nothing. Not anything measurable anyway.
I think I've got that section worked out. I'll try to get the vid uploaded tonight or tomorrow night. Tbh, my time practicing has been cut into a bit. My wife is having to pull longer hours due to layoff's with her company. I'm still practicing everynight but with my kid's needing attention, it's just not quality time.
Yeah tough times for everyone right now with jobs and stuff. It's good news that she wasn't one of the ones layed off.
Do what you can and enjoy some time with your kids. They grow up so quick.
A forgot to ask if Marcus sent you the backing track for this lesson?
Man, just now getting to my guitar tonight, so a take is pretty unlikely.. Thanks for your encouragement Jeff and yes, she is lucky. She has been with Verizon Wireless for 14 years and I'm glad seniority still means something. It don't help my efforts with practice time, but I'm very grateful though for what we do have have considering the times.
As far as the backing, Marcus was having issues with his Pro Tools, said if he could get them worked out, he would send it to me. He also said it would be fine for me to use, so I have acquired it, just not with the second guitar, which I'm going to try and work out myself. May need you to help on this bro..
I'm still working on the strumming and arpeggios which I will nail before this thing ends, at tempo!
So, off to utilize my little bit of time that I do have before my eyelids get too heavy...
Tonight has not went well with practice..but here's an upload..He needed a pick..
I'm always thinking of you bro
Check it out! This is like you Jackson and my Fender ran into each other. Like a Ressee's cup
Not the best quality sound clip, but you get the point.
Your right, I think if we through them both in a blender, we would have ourselves a Lynch Sig ESP..
Your son 2 hand tapes better then me.
Thanks man! So now am I teaching the 2 of you for the price of one
He's 3 going on 13 I believe..
Hunter told me to tell you he appreciated your feedback and agreed that he is much better looking than his dad!
Hey Jeff,
I'll have you up a vid here in a few. I managed to get an hour or so tonight.. I'm still not through the lesson though and have some mistakes in what I have learned. Only about half way but felt I owe you something. Should be up shortly..
When ever your ready to upload that is fine. You don't owe me anything! You owe yourself something!
Of course uploads are the only way I can help or make the practice time you have effective.
Can't wait man! Hit the turbo button!
Here you go man, took YT forever to procees and it's a small file... Just a few word's, I know you really want to see me fretting the chords differently but the problem I'm having is this. If you watch Marcus when he goes into the sort of gallop, he is fretting the low E at the third fret with his thumb. I just can't seem to transition doing it like that. So, it has kind of got me fretting all of the chords the way I am.
Also, I know the lesson up through the harmonics part but lost it before I got there and was running out of time. Anyway, here's what I have...
Steve, thanks for your upload
Over all it sounds really great. There are a few things I would like you to think about with your fingering which we will get to tomorrow. I know what you mean about the chords with the thumb and that is OK for now. But if you can get the main full bar chords correct that should be your goal. Solo stuff I am happy with so far. You have a really good sence of rhythm and placement which is one thing most beginners seem to struggle with.
Thanks for the upload. Your doing really well
Thanks Jeff and looking forward to your thought's. I will try to upload some other things tonight as well for you to have a look at.
Thanks man for your honest opinion. Means a lot. I will upload a new take with less effects so you can hear the notes better. Trust me, I am working on trying to break the picking habit for sure. It's just so easy while in the moment to revert back to all down stroke's. I'm thinking in my mind, "up down up down" but my hand seems to have a mind of it's own sometimes. Maybe you could suggest an exercise at a slower tempo to help me work on this.
As far as the chords go, I'm a bit confused on what you are saying here. These shapes look to me like regular power chords. I'm playing them barred with ring finger only because the thumb think is throwing me off. Are you saying I should still be using ring and pinky for the 2nd and third notes of the shape?
Gotcha man! Another bad habit is not what I want, I'm on it first thing in the morning!
Another take on the S&A. Still st 50bpm and don't sound much better with limited practice but it feels better. I actually came close to hitting the 2nd F# Gonna work more on it tonight when my wife gets home from work. Sorry, I noticed my left hand is a bit out of the screen..
Yeah man!!!! You have made some great progress with this since your last upload. Go back and look at it.
Sounds good (clean) and you look more comfortable with the chords. You didn't get the 'F' chord the first time but you nailed it on the second one with the up stokes. Well done! You used the correct fingering for it also (you got the pinky down).
Stay at 50bpm. You just about got it. When you can play it smoother everything will just click on like a light bulb and you will be at 100bpm before you know it.
This is great!
WOW, thanks man.. I don't hear the progress, but feel it in my hands if that makes sense. I'll go back and have a look at the first upload. My muscle memory in my fingers seem to be getting better which I'm thrilled about.
I'll try and post another take of this one and the BS lesson tomorrow.
Thanks again for your encouragement Jeff, I know it don't show, but I have really taken a lot in since we started this!
80's Metal,
Steve
Hey man,
Got a couple of vid's for you to watch at half time. The first is another take on Marcus' lesson. It 's a bit sloppy but I tried to focus on fretting the way you want me to and also alternate picking. I also backed off the effects a bit too.. I aslso went down to 130bpm to help me get more comfortable fretting this way. I feel the bad habit starting to release itself from me.
The second is another take on the S&A lesson by Murris. Still not perfect and some dead notes in their but I feel it's getting better.
First half of the BS Lesson by Marcus Siepen
S&A by Muris Varajic @ 50bpm
Steve, I have to tell you that these takes look really good. The BS lesson has a few timing issues and that’s really it. This could be fixed by just practicing the lesson more, but I think we have gotten what we need out of it and it is time to move on.
Same thing with the second take on Muris's lesson. You just need to practice it some more and you will get to 100bpm before you know it.
I think you have made some great progress in the short time we have been working together. Here is how I would like us to move forward. Lets keep working with Muris's lesson and add two more exercises. This is going to give you I well round practice routine. I am figuring that maybe you have 1 hour a day to practice so lets break it down like this.
15 minutes with http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/pop-strumming/ This will be a good warm up for your right hand.
15 minutes with Muris's lesson
30 minutes with http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/little-finger-work-out/ This will get your fingers moving and build strength. Also you'll notice it's all alternate picking and will help to get your hands working together. Start slow and learn a small section first. Once you memorized the pattern he is using then add another section and so on. The goal is to learn the lesson and be able to play it comfortable at 60bpm.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Edit: typo
Thanks man, just had a look at the lessons and like your recommendations. I'll get started on the practice schedule tonight.
Hey man, how is the new pratice schedule working out? Is the 1 hour a day routine going to work out for you? I hope your enjoying it.
Working great man! Started with it last night and getting ready to jump into it tonight here in the next 30 min or so. Getting a bit of a late start tonight. I feel a bit more structured with this routine so thanks for your suggestion bro. I have always just practiced randomly and never set time limits on anything.
Last night was really the first time practice truly felt productive. Once I have the other two lessons memorized, I'm sure it will feel even better!
I've noticed too, anytime I pick up my guitar and start playing anything, my right hand is moving up AND down! For me, big accomplishment bro and I owe your guidance to that!
How would you like for me to post progress on Dejan's lesson? All of the routine, or just the goal at hand?
I'm glad you like it man! I thought breaking things up into time slots would help, especially with the kids. This way you can play, take a break if you need and continue. If we just stick to a schedule like this and change lesson's as we go you will really see some progress.
When you get time I would really like to see an upload for each. If you don't know the 2 new lessons all the way through just give me a teaser. I really want to see your right hand moving Maybe instead of playing it one time through and stopping you could do it 2 or 3 times before stopping the video.
You seem more excited about your playing and that makes me feel very good
No prob's Jeff, will do man! Yes, exited!!!
Jeff,
Tried something a little different tonight. Sorry no vid man but I want you to have a listen if you would.
I started with a simple Chord progression from chords out of the S&A lesson. Am, C and Em, then I used the same strumming pattern form Joe's Pop lesson but at a slower tempo and tried to follow the progression with a solo..
Have a listen and tell me how bad it is. I played this all by ear with no metronome so may be a bit out of time but anyhow...
I'll have a video up for you tomorrow on the other stuff.
Cheers man
Steve
Sounds good man!!
I can really hear your right hand moving UP and DOWN. Very good!
Where is little 'Hunters' track? I haven't heared from him for a while!
How is his progress? Please tell him to upload soon and I think he is doing great.
Thanks man, and yes, as Mr Miyagi would say, Show me paint the fence.. UUUpppp...Dooownn..
As far as Hunter,we might just have to slip one in of him tomorrow as well. He's starting to like the keyboard a bit as well. He already thinks he's better than me, which might be true..
Another update on the S&A lesson. Recorded earlier today and thought I would get a take in on Dejan's lesson but the Bud Shootout is on ..You know us Southerners... Still at 50bpm but have been practicing it at 75 as you will see..lol
Yeah I was watching the race to. The track seemed ruff and the cars were bouncing all over the place. I hate when they end the race because of a wreck.
Hey about your upload, one thing I noticed was this. You’re not painting fence UP and DOWN. On the first part it’s all DOWN strokes and you end on an UP stroke for each chord. On the second part it’s all UP strokes and you end on a down stroke for each chord. Think of it more like a slow sweep. Just let the pick glide UP or DOWN the strings depending on which part you are playing. Then you won’t have to watch your right hand while you pick. This should make it easier for you to focus on the left hand chords and fingering. The ‘F’ chord got worse on this one.
How are the other exercises coming along?
So you want me to paint the fence on this one... That's going to present some issues for sure but I will overcome..Muris plays the lesson this way, but if you want, I will go to all AP. And yes, I was worse on the #&$*(%(*& "F" Chord.. It's the I suck button...
As far as the others go, I have mainly been focusing on Dejan's lesson this week and using Joe's lesson as a warm up as you recommended. I will say, my left hand hurt's from that exercise even at low speed. I started with it this morning then backed off to get a bit of rest.
Still after it though, 60bpm is the goal!
Hey bro,
Sorry I have not been around much these last couple of days. I enjoyed our talk we had btw. A lot has happened at work since that talk. I have not had much "quality" time with my guitar either. I managed to get a quick take of the S&A lesson last night and I must say, to me, it's not much better. Still practicing it though and if I get a chance tonight, I'll record a vid of the first part of Dijan's lesson. I'll talk to you more about the situation. Still have a job though, so I guess I should be thankful.
I enjoyed our talk time to man!
Sorry about whatever is going on at your job. You and I (and a lot of others in the USA) are going through all this company restructure crap right now. Expenses are increasing and the amount of pay or appreciation is decreasing.
I don't get as much playing time as I would like either as you know. Once a week for a few hours really sucks! You also know what’s going on in my personnel life. But instead of getting frustrated I try and channel that energy and I really look forward to my time playing. When I close the door and it is my time to practice that's it! No one bothers me and I let my emotions poor out. However I feel at the moment I just go with it. This really helps me deal with things. I eventually forget about other things, the real me begins to come out and I start to feel better. Maybe this can help you also.
Thanks for the upload BTW bro. I think it was a lot better than the last one. Your aware of the mistakes you made so there isn't a reason for me to point them out. I will say this though, you looked pretty comfortable playing at that tempo. There weren't any huge mistakes and trust me when I tell you the little ones (muted notes, etc..) will be gone some. I know practicing this lesson is getting old but it is very important that you accomplish this.
I'll call you this weekend if you want to chat. I have 3 - 4 collabs to work on and upload so I will be around if you need me
Thanks man. How bout a chat on the way home tomorrow? I try and run at 5:00 pm..
Cool! You can count on it bro.
It's "Miller Time"!!!!
YES INDEED!!! Call you tomorrow man...
Steve,
Do you have any spandex that has that same pattern as your guitar??
Thanks Monte for stopping by.
Cheers Monte
Wife just got in from work, so free for a moment, Monte asking if I have some spandex, Jeff's saying he'll explain later, the beverages have been flowing a bit, but...should I log off and try this again in the morning?....
Where did the upload go.. Monte?...Jeff? What the heck are you two up to....
That's it, I'm joining the "Upside Down Show"..... Seems all I've heard the last two hours...
Your making things up man. Better slow down on those beverages
Hum....Let's see...
Monte..
"Here ya go guys" (upload)
Jeff..
"Thanks Monte for sharing this with use! This will help a lot and save use some time.
Steve, I will explain later
Cheers Monte"
Still think I'm crazy....
Can't get anything past you Moderators
Just wanted to check in and see how things are going. Will I be getting any uploads from the 2 new leasons this weekend? I'd really like to see how your progressing.
Hey man, I wanted to throw something up so you could see my hand movement on Dijan's lesson and get some feedback. I was running out of time and every time I hit the "button" I screwed up so I just rolled on with the first 4 positions of the lesson.
Actually got some good quality this time!
Ahh! Very cool and thanks. I will look it over here in the next few minutes and comment for you. I hope the drum track thing worked out.
Drum's...Hadn't had time to mess with it to be honest... Son seems to be getting worse so might be away for the next little bit. I know It's not a lot to go on for offering advice but wanted to get something put up to show you. Feel free to pass on the comments...
No problem man. I could tell by watching that there where other things on your mind and that's cool.
I hope your son starts feeling better bro. Get out the Lysal spray you don't want to get it.
I've watched it twice and I think like we talked about a metrenome or basic drum beat would really help. This would give you something to focus on while playing.
All-in-All I am very happy with seeing your AP (right hand) and fingering with the left hand bro! It put a smile on my face to see things getting connected together. I can tell you have been working hard.
Thanks for being easy on me man... Yeah, you know a lot is going on but that's life and we just have to push on. I'll get a vid up with a beat so you can evaluate my timing a bit more. Have a good evening bro!
I love you man!!! Nice new avitar.
I guessed wrong on that
BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE MY 'BUD LIGHT"
OK
I'm here bro, will merge our old stuff.
Sounds like a good idea! Edit what you want but keep the comments and unploads together.
Cheerio's
What up Jeff, got my rig back together today and recorded the first part of the pinky w/o. This time I added a simple drum track @ 60 bpm. Still a bit sloppy but I'm going to be working hard on this the next few days.
Nascar qualifying in the background. Why does this not surprise me.
Way to go Steve! @60 bpm, which is our goal. I think working with the drumbeat is really helping. Looks like you are getting good control of your fingers and from what I could see of your right hand, it also looked all right.
Now we just need to put the whole lesson together @60bpm and were good to go. Once you can do this we will move on to something more musical so you can apply what you have learned so far.
Only suggestion would be dial back the reverb and the treble some to get a warmer tone.
How are the chords coming along (Muris’s lesson)? Are they getting easier?
Hey Steve, I have been looking back over your progress since we started and doing some thinking. You have worked really hard and I hope you feel like all of your pratice time has paid off. We had to work on a lot of the basics which sometimes isn't really all that fun.
I think you are ready for this lesson.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/Bb-minor-phrasing-beginner/
This is your first solo lesson and I know you will do a fine job with it. I want you to focus on mainly this one lesson and the Chords one from Mirus. You still need to show me you can play the chords bro and I won't cut you any slack with that. You wouldn't want me to anyway, right?
Cool with you?
Chords are getting easier Jeff, and know I would not want you to let me off the hook on this lesson. I need it! I'm still practicing it and will add this new lesson of Muris' as well.
I'll also dial the verb and treble back a bit on my tone.
I'll get some vid's up of my progress with the Chords, Pinky workout (hopefully a bit further through), and something on the new lesson in the next couple of days. Hou'd that be?
I just knew you were going to say something about the TV in the background It was muted btw...
Check this little vid out of my kid's playing in the snow...Through some of my old creations behind it. Forgive me for the quality, it was taken with a photo cam...Man, it's nice to have power again, you just don't know what ya got til it's gone. Wait, did Cinderella say something along those lines in ths 80's?
Cool man! Got a play to go to this evening that my daughter is in but I'll start on the new lesson right after!
Level 3... phew... Just an update man, working on the lesson. I think this one might just break me into sweeps!
You can do it man!
It would probably help if you practiced each video lick with a kaz-box. I know it has helped me with the mixolydian lesson I'm working on quite a bit.
Here is a link for you, check it out!
http://www.reztronics.com/prod01.htm
By the way, I still need you to play the chords and paint the fence
I'll get it man, no worries... I like the link too. I'm actually just working on it along with Muris in each vid along with the backing. May be why it takes me a while but once I have it that way, the only thing to do is overcome the "record button"..
And still painting the fence too....
Hey man, quick update on the Bb lesson. will you take a look at the vid and see if you can find some things that will help me get a better sweep pattern down. I know the lesson but can't get through it. Maybe more time and practice is all I need. I love the lesson btw and think that once I master it, the technique will take me far with my playing. Thanks man for recommending this one!
No man, not at all and thanks for the advice. I do feel that once mastered, floating the pick across the strings is one of things that will set me "sweep free" I think with time it will come as my practice time has been quite limited lately, bout an hour or so every other night.
What do you think Jeff?
Sorry Steve, I have had some issues with my PC (sound and video not playing correct at all, etc..).
I seemed to have got things working now.
@Amol thanks for jumping in and helping with your comments.
Steve he is right! Most of your problems seem to be caused by you right hand. I am going to upload you a video response soon. I can explain things better that way rather than typing a bunch of text.
I'll PM you when it has been uploaded.
Cool, a vid would be great bro. I know it's my right hand as I have never tried a sweep shape so like I said, this lesson will take me a ways with my playing.
I got you covered bro and I'll try to get it up tomorrow
Now you have to look and listen to my ugly muge!
Hope you find the comments helpful. I thought you could maybe get more out of this video rather then me trying to explain everything with just text. If looking at my ugly mug is to much of a distraction then feel free to convert the audio to mp3 and put it on your iPod
Video Comments: Picking technique
Man, this is great, I really like the video approach. I will watch it several times and digest what you are saying. I picked my guitar up when you were explaining the closed hand picking and tbh, it didn't feel all that bad. I have often wondered how David Walliman picks the way he does and still sound amazing.
Uploads will come soon! Thanks man.
Jeff,
Thanks again for your upload and I think your right. Having my hand closed seems to be helping a bit. I recorded a quick take at a different angle so you could better see what is going on. I bummed a note or two and was anxious at the beginning but anyhow, have a look and see what you think.
HELL YES!!!
You got me all excited and then stopped playing. Pick a slower backing track (about 5 - 10bpm) and practice at that speed. Even though you did the sweep part really nice it still felt a little rushed. Playing slower will really help you get things in sync and smoother.
Hurry up and do another take now! I want more you lesson tease.
Glad to hear that Jeff. I will start practicing it with a slower backing and then post a new take of the whole lesson. Thanks for all the advice man, means a lot!
Your welcome Steve. I'm glad you’re finding my tips helpful and not taking my criticisms the wrong way.
I'm really looking forward to your next upload.
Just checking in Jeff. I'm sure you are aware that a lot is going on atm with the REC program so been a bit busy with that. Also I have a new member of the family. A 12 week old Golden Retriever named Sammy.. Had a few sleepless nights this past week.
All in all, I feel like I'm still where I was at on the lessons from the previous uploads. Going to try and get some quality practice time in this weekend to get a little further down the road. Hope all is well on your end man!
Cheers,
Steve
Thanks bro, yes, definitely busy but still practicing for sure. I'll get something up on the Bb lesson so you can see my progress. Also I have not forgot the S&A (paint the fence) lesson. I still work on it too! check out the little man... And your right, the kids are having a ball with him.
What's going on Jeff? Hope all has been well for you and yours. Sorry for such a hiatus but been quite busy lately as you might have guessed. Thought I would throw up something and boy, I can tell I haven't made a vid in a while..
Hit the button and still couldn't play it clean and this one is at 55 bpm. So still a few plub's but I'm getting close to full speed at 72 bpm
Steve this is great man!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You rhythm / timing is right on. You played it very clean and it sounds great. You had the mess up at the end but I can tell it was the cameras fault and not yours. You should be very proud of yourself.
Practice it like this at 55 and work on a wider vibrato for a few of the longer notes. I see a REC upload in your future.
This made my night. Great work!!
EDIT: I like your new pratice room.
Thanks man. I'll work on the wider vibrato too. The practice room is still the same, just turned my desk around so you don't see all the clutter..
Later,
Steve
Hi Steve,
Hope things are well and you had a good Easter with your family! My favorites are the Chocolate / Peanut butter eggs.
Let me know if you need anything, even a chat!
I'm here for you
BTW,
I looked at your last video again and have noticed something. In the part around 0.27 sec I notice you are having problems with your UP sweep picking from the small 'E' string up to the BIG 'E'. We need to learn how to paint the fence down (which you do really good) as well as UP (not so good because you go back to all down picking). Take a closer look and tell me if I'm wrong. Your AP is starting to look really nice, I like that!
What do you think? We can fix this real quick, no problem.
Let me know
what up man, been a while hasn't it. Had a little time today so I recorded a take on Muris' lesson at full speed. New used guitar I picked up really cheap and still working some bug's out of it. You'll notice I have yet to get the intonation exact on the B string but it's not real bad.
Anyway, have a look see and if you would agree to move on, I have a lesson I'm cmomping at the bit to get to. Hope all is well up your way..HOT down here! 89 degrees today.. Think I'll throw it up on the REC board as well..
Steve, you should be very proud of this! Your take is really good and I'm glad you uploaded to the REC
Fix the tuning with the 'B' string and you should have a winner!
We are going to move on my friend so don't you worry!
Well Done!!
EDIT: Nice new guitar bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the reverse headstock!
You mentioned in you post that you had a lesson you where wanting to work on.
Which one is it?
Might be a bit over my head but I love this lesson by Ivan M.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/atmospheric_ballad_solo_in_g_minor/
what cha think?
Got to head over to the neighbors for a min, be back in a bit....
Looks good!
Lets give it a go mate!
Let me know if you have questions.
Cool Jeff! I'll jump right into it!
Hey man, been awhile and I'm sorry. The REC has taken up a bit of my time on the site but just so you know, I have been practicing when I can.
I need your help on how to work out this tricky part in http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/atmospheric_ballad_solo_in_g_minor/. It's video #4. It's quadruplets on 32nd note values with all picking. I can almost get it legato style but that's not how he plays it. Strict AP and you most flow with the backing to get the feel right. Any advice on how to work this part out?
I've got the rest of the lesson almost down.
Later man,
Steve
Will get something up for you to see as soon as I can Jeff. You know how warm weather and kids go, they want to be outside all the time. Bought something for the family to enjoy this summer...
Did you go on the "Price is Right" or something? I'm sure your family is enjoying this! Are you doing any water skiing?
Congrats man!
I'm not sure what your having problems with or how to help so upload something when you get time. It doesn't have to be a big production. Just an mp3 or short video of that section so I can get an idea of what's going on.
Cheerio Captain!
no man, bought it used. Very clean boat, 2nd owner and he is a ASE master certified mechanic so I knew the engine was looked after as well. Just leisurely cruises at this point until my wife get's more familiar with driving it.
I grew up with a boat in the family, but not for her so I'm kinda easing them into it. So far, so good.
I'll get an audio upload up soon so you can see where I crash in this lesson...
Still need some help with that lesson Steve? I guess you have been to busy still with everything so I just wanted to check.
I do man..Guitar and other wise..Been thinking about giving you a call. can you talk on the ride home tomorrow?
As I said in your uploads thread, been playing around with a piano backing as well Jeff. Was getting a bit board with other things so decided to do something different and try to be creative.. Take a listen, Not a complete improv as I would play around a little bit in certain sections then I put it all together in one take.
Thanks Jeff, the structure and development was what I was most after. Still a long ways away but as I add technique and further knowledge of notes, I think I will get better. Just not enough time now a days...Wish I would have started this adventure 25 years ago...
If you think you can find a little time, jump in Ivan's "Stormy Collab" with me. Its just basic blues in A and if you want we can work thru it together. Sounds like fun to me
Funny you mentioned that Jeff, I was just setting here fooling around with the backing.. I'll go sign-up.
Very cool! I am inside your mind.....
If you want to discuss ideas or anything else we can do that here. No need for video stuff, just short mp3 are fine and quicker.
Cool! Here's an idea I had for opening line....
Note choice was good and I like the way you start with the bend! 2 words for you "Neck Pickup". Big fat blues tone. Maybe thats just my personnel prefrence though.
Keep the clips coming Steve.
Haha.. Happy 4th to you bro!
That's a great idea about uploading my licks for you to comment on
I should have some time tomorrow if everything goes as plained and I will do that.
Tips beer, gulps and burps!!
Skillet
What do you think man.. I'm getting all I can get out of these Duncan Designed p/up's and the EMG's were a bit to much. I'm fairly satisfied with it, I think.
Thanks for the comments Jeff. I'll work a bit more on it and see if I can add some color. Looking forward to hearing what you have so far!
Check out this take Jeff. I think it adds a bit of color and sounds a little more bluesy. I still have to work on the ending, not happy with it.
OK Steve, so here you go. I usually wouldn't ever post such a ruff take but for you I'll make an exception.
I figured I'd try and make this some what of a learning thing for the both of use.
Here is where I'm at. First thing I do with a collab is find a tone that fits the mood of what I'm going for. Then I just play slowly through it to get a feal for where I want to be on the neck and what notes to finish on. This is far from a finished product.

I'm diggin it man! Love the note choice and the pre-bends definitely add some flavor. I can see how landing on the right note in each passage sets the stage for the next. I'll take what I can from it bro, thanks and keep updating.
Have you listened to the latest of mine? disregard the ending as that will change for sure!
OK man, took your advice and added some start-stop phrases. I'm liking this take a lot better!
EDIT: New Take with some changes from the previous...
^^^New Upload^^^
Wow! Great improvement!
I really like this take for you Steve.
Adding the pauses between the begining licks worked out great imho. Structure in good you have a begining, middle and the end where you through in the thrill was great. I don't think there is much I would change. If you decide to do another take my only other suggestion would be to try a little less gain (sounds kind of to heavy metal for my taste but cool at the same time) and the vibrato could be smoother.
I think Ivan will have some nice things to say when you upload your take.
Awesome, thanks Jeff, glad you like it. It does have a bit drive to it. I drew some inspiration from Garry here with Albert. Check him out, just awesome imo!
Uploading now to the thread...
Well there you go then
This was fun and as I listen to some of your older uploads before we started the MTP I can really hear some great progress.
Congrats Steve, you should be very proud of your work.
Thanks Jeff, progress is really all that matters to me. And thank you again for all your help so far along the way. Will have many more questions so I hope your in for a long ride...
Cheers Jeff, glad you think Pedja's collab will help me. I wanted to get your opinion of this take..
Thanks Jeff, I built that tone with a SAX in mind..So glad you picked up on that. I'll post it up then with your blessing...
I have read his comments before... But that is exactly what I want!
Uploaded!
I took his comments in a very positive way man and felt they were on the good side as well! I'm going to take his advice and keep uploading more takes with different time feel. I'm liking Pedja's style with his collab's. It definitely feels like an "in class" type of deal.
Take's before the 19th, I'll post here before there my friend for you to comment too!
Thanks man, I will!
I told you I would upload here first so here is another take. Very similar to the first but I started on the 2nd bar and played 2 bar.. rest..2bar rest..as Pedja recommended. Check it out..
I feel the same way man. This is definitely a different approach and I am learning from it. I plan on another take with as you said, faster sections. It's just hard to think and fit those in to two bars. I think Pedja wants it consistent so if I go 3 bars, there's a long wait so the playing better be catchy!
What's up Jeff? Been a bit hectic for me this weekend, had a lot going on but I managed to get some time in on the strings this afternoon. I been wanting to get into this lesson by Ivan Zecic so I jumped right on it. To my surprise, I picked up on it fairly quick. Still need to sharpen the vibrato and clean up a few rhythmic details. I couldn't help myself but to through together a quick low quality vid for ya.. ...
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/creating_an_atmosphere/
This looks pretty good to me Steve. Nice job Great way to spend your afternoon.
Like you said, just tighten up a few parts and work on a wider vibrato.
REC it up bro!
Thanks man, will do!
what up Jeff, next up on the agenda....http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/historical-failure-the-riffs/ I've dropped down a bit.. and this should be a little workout for me not to mention a lot of fun! I'll post the progress..
Sounds pretty close to me. Hard to tell without hearing it blend with the backing. Watch the Bass. If I had to make a guess about any adjustments it would be to back the bass off some and raise the mids up a little. That would give you a clearer, punchier crunch that might blend better imo.
Thanks man, I'll continue to work it a bit. at least now I know I have a good starting point.
Hey, Mr Sach fan, you seen this lesson from Zsolt yet?....
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/joe_satriani_always_with_me_always_with_you/#last
Awesome vid man! and yes, that IS getting it done! Look at his left hand at the 9:38 mark and few other places, who does that remind you of...The Claw!
Hate you had to miss your vacation with your family man. Yeah, I feel the same way when I have the house to myself which is not that often. I'm sure your missing them already.
Look at it this way, definitely time to sit down with the strings and have some fun!
Hey Steve, I posted a ruff sound check, take kind of thing in my MTP thread for Muris to comment on. Here is a link.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=24785&st=20&gopid=404351&#entry404351
I you have a minute I would like to hear you thoughts as well.
Still working on it
Skillet
Thanks for asking me to comment Jeff.
Overall, your playing is tight but the thing that stood at to me the most was vibrato was not clear in some spots. I don't think that it was you, I think it was more the tone. Don't get me wrong, I like it, I just think it needs a little more work with EQ to get it more defined so you can hear everything more clearly.
Do this for me, open your FX chain on the lead track. Select ReaEQ (cockos) for EQ setting. Then click the "preset setting" and try each of them. I personally like the "wide female vocal" setting. I also like the "mud free" setting for some tracks. I think you can make this tone a bit better, ( it's already good ) but play around some more with it. The mid's seem to be a little high for my liking but your always telling me to add more...
Try some of the settings I mentioned and find one you like then duplicate the track and pan...You know the drill. I would even add a third and center it and see how fat it sounds.
I have backed off of bumping a track to get a stereo field and started using Loser/stereo enhancer and adjusting the width to my liking. Seems to sound a bit better to my ears after the render process.
I love what you have so far man and can't wait to hear the final!
Thanks a lot Steve, I will try that and see what happens.
I think the one of the problem is my stock pickups though I haven't been happy with them for quit so time
I'll keep working on it Bro
You're killing me Jeff......I was drooling with anticipation waiting to hear you bust out the Satch tapping lick and then your take ended..... Probably jammed your tapping finger during baseball season I suppose.....I can wait...... Nice work on your take.....
Sorry for hijacking your thread.....\m/\m/
Alright Steve an Monte, here is another mix, still the same crappy licks that need to be tightened up but I'll get it.
Is this EQ any better Steve?
Cheers guys
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=24785&st=20#entry404351
Oh man, I really enjoyed the 2nd mix. I'm listening at work so I had to listen to all 3 again with these speakers to get a good comparison and I definitely prefer the 2nd one! Nice job! Save that FX chain!
Just goes to show it really does matter what you are listening through. After I got home tonight, I listened to all 3 again through my studio headphones and monitors. Listening through my headphones (Samson CH70), I preferred the 3rd take, through my monitors (KRK RP5's) I liked the 2nd better.
Before I post a final take, I usually find a happy medium between the two and hope everyone enjoys. Not always the case..
Hey Jeff, thought I'd throw a little teaser of this lesson at you. You will notice a some string noise which I will fix. I'm going to work this one til I get it as perfect as I can then I'll post a video. Hope all is well up your way..
Yeah man, that's me.. I've learned the lesson just need to tighten up some spot's. I must say, there's a lot going on in here. Between the muted notes and fast rhythm, to keeping it clean, I see why it's a 5 rated lesson.
Video coming soon!
Just another update of where I'm at with this one Jeff. Almost there. Need to clean up some timing issues toward the middle and end and I'll be ready for the camera and those 100 takes or so..
Here you go... Full version
Thanks Jeff! As for the timing, that's not latency, it's me, I'm still off a bit in some sections. I want to nail this lesson perfectly before I upload a video. When I can play it several times back to back with no mistakes, then I'll get out the camera...
I've nailed it a couple times already and tried video earlier, just not quite there yet. Should be soon though! All in the practice...
That sounds great Steve! No worries, I know you'll nail it! You and I both know everything changes when you hit the video record button. Just do like 10 takes in a row. One will be perfect enough I'm sure.
You didn't use the latency as an excuse for your timing. That's a very cool quality to have. Always be honest with yourself and what you hear when you play your recordings back.
I guess I'll just sit here and wait now Hurry up!
Sorry to keep you waiting man, and yeah, I stay honest to myself. It's the only way I feel I will progress. Just don't want to do things half dollar for the sake of a passing grade..
I'll send you a 6 package for your time waiting..May be an 18 though when it shows up...
Here you go man, the best I could muster with the damn camera on..
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=29624
Thanks Jeff and you are absolutely right. Being relaxed is most difficult for me and especially when the camera is on. Believe it or not, I'm even working on breathing to keep the tension down..
I'll let you know soon what I'd like to work on Ok...
Hey Steve,
I was thinking it would be nice to work on the same lesson together at the same time! What do you think?
This is one that I believe we can learn a lot from and have some fun with. Also there will be plenty of opportunities for us to discuss some theory basics and note choices.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/neoclassical_solo_for_beginners/
Heck yeah man, no problem, I learned that one last week, I'll post a take in a few minutes.. ..Kidding.. If you want to do this one together, I'm cool with that. I got a few things going on this week and I'll let you in on those as they pan out, but yeah, I'm up for it!
Sounds good man! Looking forward to it.
You can always give me a call, PM or email me if you need to talk about something.
Hi Steve,
This is what I would like us to do with this lesson. I have been thinking and want to run my ideas by you.
First of all I want 1 upload for each video section of the lesson (I will do the same as you. You upload one and I will do the same after you). There are 5 total. This will allow us to really just focus on one small section at a time getting everything correct and also addressing any questions or problems. There is a catch though. We are going to upload are recordings with NO backing track, just a metronome click. You can practice with the backings or what ever you think works best for you but not with the upload. I'll let you pick the "CLICK" sound. After we are done we will both upload our takes to the REC with the backing for our final grades. Doing all this video interaction is going to be very helpful for us and there are some very cool metal/rock techniques we can learn. Since we are both on Skype now we can also have interactive Q&A sessions or just have some fun.
How does you calender look? Can you start on the lesson this weekend?
I like this idea of yours Jeff.. I think it will help others who sees this as well. As for this weekend, I may have a bit of time tomorrow, the forecast for our area is rain so the kids will have no choice but to stay inside..
Sunday, I have to take a little rod trip to look at a new toy I've been eying. Sold the boat already and made some decent cash on it and looking at something cool... Not practical for my situation but I used to own a couple and want another. If I buy it, you will see some pictures Sunday night..
Stay tuned!!!
Not another dirt bike Steve
Well if you think it is best then enjoy it.
I can't help you with riding one of those unless you want to wreak and get hurt I'm good at that
I understand about the kid thing. Your suppose to get a Tropical storm that comes close. It will bring rain but you should be OK
Glad you like the lesson ideas. Let me know when you can start.
Not a bike man, something that still may get me in trouble though... Heres a teaser...
AHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ford Mustang Cobra? 68 maybe That would cost you a buck or 2.
Probably don't have the year right (for the car. Just dreaming) but have fun. Take a road trip up and stay with me for a few days. You and your family are always welcome, I just need a warning It would be a good time guaranteed.
68, oh how I wish!!!! It's a bit newer than that and will be a weekend cruiser, can you say convertible.. As for the invite, that would be cool man! We may just have to do that in the future. Or, maybe next summer you guys could come down to Myrtle Beach for your vacation and we could meet up there. I have the beach 2.5 hours south and the mountains about 2.5 hours north of where we live.
Here you go Jeff, I told you I would post up some pic's of my weekender...Recorded a short video instead. Man, I feel like I'm 20 again when I'm in the thing. I noted most of the mod's on the description...
Is this MTP for guitar or Muscle Cars??????
If I bought that car would it fix my AP problems Skenny??????
\m/\m/
Wooo hoooooo!!!!
That is one sweet looking ride. It sounds like a beast that need to be unleashed. Is it duel exhaust with Flow Masters or something else?
When you where sitting in it I thought you where going to tap the gas some so I could hear her talk to me
Congrats again Steve!
Thanks man, I would have hit for you but the car was still cold. As far as the exhaust, it's a custom Dynomax system. If you look close, you will see the side exit's at the back of the door..
Hey Steve,
Go get the POD Farm VST FREE!
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=30799&hl=
Regards to you and your family
Thanks for the link Jeff, I think I got it in time yesterday. Been quite busy lately as you can imagine. wife is getting huge and swears she can't do much.. we know how that goes. I hope to get back on some sort of schedule with my playing soon. Right now, it's random, grab my guitar and practice when I can!
Hope all is well with you and yours!
Things are going great Steve! Thanks for checking in and I'm glad you got the VST in time.
Keep the wife and family happy man. Do what you can when you have time and ask me anything. I'm always lurking (is this how you spell that ) around the forums or something here at GMC.
Regards
So Steve, what are we working on? Did you quite playing?
Hope you quiting the Cig's is going alright.
No man, not at all. It's just that my practice time has been so sporadic lately that I have not committed myself to any one area or lesson. Although I have been wanting to try http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/solo-from-spindles/ lesson of Trond's. The dynamics, harmonics and melody are awesome imo! This may be it..
If that is what you want to work on and you can commit to it then I'm behind you all the way.
What do you feel you are going to learn from this lesson?
What are you wanting to improve with your playing with this?
I'm just trying to get a feel for where you're at with all of this and what your current goals are.
Well, I think it would help me focus a bit more on dynamics and phrase development. And, I just think it's a cool lesson!
What do you think about the tone of this patch here..
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=18323
Hey man, long time no type... I wanted you to have a listen to this take over Gabe's Frusciante backing and tell me what you think. I can't get that Frusciante tone and I'm hearing a little signal clip but I'm happy with the structure.
Man, that sound really nice Steve!! I like the way that one note rings out right before the change.
Here, try this tone patch to give me a reference. Play the same thing and upload another. There is plenty of drive in this patch so don't turn it up. The EQ I set is what I would really like to hear. If you like the tone then we can tweak it some.
You might want to try playing with your volume nob to. Roll it back some and you'll notice the tone get fatter and more defined.
Frusciante_Collab.l6t ( 2.08K )
: 86
well that take was improvised so here is something similar using your tone. No other effects have been added and only one backing and one lead track in the DAW...Guitar Volume is rolled back a little more that halfway with full tone.
Well it's up to you and what you think. To me it sounds warmer, more even on the high end, also more vintage.
I like it a lot!! You could use just a bit more grit maybe. If you want to try another improv set you guitar volume up just a notch. If you had it around half (or 5) then try 7ish.
Great takes
I agree man, thanks for the tone. I'm going to play around a bit more with it and see what I can come up with.
Whatcha think about this...
Very nice job!!!!!
I herd it this morning in the collabs upload thread first.
I'm glad I was able to help some. Keep ROCKIN!
Thanks man. check out this one when you have time..
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=31852&view=findpost&p=439967
Another nice one Steve!
Your becoming a collab junky this month
It good to hear you playing and having some fun
HeHe, thanks man. I did enjoy these and after the last one with David, I took his advice and started singing the melody ideas I had. Seemed to help the creativity.
My ears are getting better and I actually (think) I'm starting to hear the differences in keys and somewhat able to determine a few.
My fretboard knowledge is holding me back I believe. I somewhat know the associated tones of the notes but not the note itself if that makes any sense..
I think I need to start some exercises to really get a hold of where all the notes are. Any suggestions? My thoughts were to learn them all on one string, (low E) and then transpose them to the next string up.
Playing with my ear again.. I took a simple song and tried to connect some notes to the melody. All ear, no tab or even hearing the song, just trying to remember what I know of it. Going to take you to church on this one..
Btw, how bout them Bengals!
Great, looking forward to it Jeff. Take your time man, no rush, you know I'm covered up with honey-do's anyway..
