How many time have you been playing guitar?

I've played guitar since I was 17 (10 years ago) but not in a very serious way. I dropped playing for about two years between then and now. only recently started getting pretty serious.

- Favorite guitarists, bands and musicians.

very much into thrash right now. lots of Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica as well as newer bands like Vektor and Tantara

fav guitarists of all time:

Allen Collins and Gary rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd
Dave Mustaine
Kirk Hammett
Kerry king
Pig Champion of Poison Idea
Greg Ginn
Neil Michael Hagerty of Royal Trux

- What are your guitar goals?

Right now I'm very focused on perfecting thrash guitar but I would like to learn various metal skills in both lead and rhythm

- How would you like to you see yourself in 5 years (related to music and guitar)?

hopefully being able to play whatever comes to mind without struggle. being 100% confident with speed, rhythm, lead and theory

- How many time can you play guitar each day?

weekdays: 60-90 mins
weekends: 60-240 mins

- Do you have playing live experience?

a bit. not very much and just with simple punk riffs

- Which are your strong and weak points with guitar?

ability to fell rhythm and timing is pretty weak, especially at high speeds. I feel pretty strong in terms of dedicating time to practice and exercises

- What do you know about music theory?

getting more into it. very basic knowledge at this point regarding scales, intervals, arpeggios, melodic resolution. slowly moving through Troy Stetina's fret board mastery

- Can you record videos of you playing?

done
- Share here audios and videos that reflect your current playing. (the ones that you've sent me via PM are ok)

Hi Ben, thanks for your info. So well, let's start this first week with two lessons, one more related to lead and the other more based on rhythm guitar.

The routine will be based on your every day practice time average: 90 minutes.

Warming up (5 minutes)
https://youtu.be/1XsLRQFV7rY

Rhythm lesson: (30 minutes)
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metallica-For-Beginners/

Solo lesson: (30 minutes)
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/neocla..._for_beginners/

Theory stuff: (25 minutes)
Improvisation course week#1

At first this can seem to be a lot of stuff, but work on a different part from the lessons each day and everything will be easier to remember. Always practice using backing tracks and metronome. If you feel that any of the lessons is over or below your level and you'd like something more connected with your level, just let me know.

What do you think?

hey Gabe,

looks great! was actually looking at that neo-classical lesson a few days ago. both are a bit more basic than stuff I've been working with but I think it will be good for me to slow down and really hammer out the basics. I'll prob have a it less time this week than usual but I've already started working on this. i'll plan on checking in with you by next tue with some recordings of my progress.

Great! As you feel that you'll master soon these lessons please listen carefully to the original takes and pay attention to details like vibrato, dynamics, groove, tone, articulation and other elements that make it sound professional.

Please keep me updated.

Hey Gabe,

just wanted to give you a quick update. as I said, I have less time this week than usual (sorry to pull that card week 1) I work in shipping and the hours get pretty rough. I am also going out of town this weekend so my fri-sat time is shot. I'm gonna push some hours Sunday and Monday and hopefully have something for you by then.
please don't think I haven't been working on this. I'm about half way through the Neo-classical solo and I've been diving pretty deep into the lead theory. I took the liberty of downloading some extra backing tracks of Itunes and I been improvising in Em, Am, A, E, Bm, focusing on the pentatonic, Minor, Harmonic minor and Phrygian-dominate scales.

I'd like to know more on sequencing and arpeggios if you have any lessons lying around

hope all is well with you. have a good weekend! cool.gif cool.gif cool.gif cool.gif

Ben

Hey Gabe!

hope you had a good weekend. Where do you live?

I'm still plugging through both lessons. I will admit I was a bit humbled by both as I've come up against some difficulty with timing. I've been messing with some more advanced lessons but I guess my rhythm is worse than I thought! cool.gif I am making progress, however and I am very grateful that you picked the lessons you did.

I'm about halfway done with the solo and a quarter of the way done with the Metallica lesson, though I'm still working out kinks there on timing. I don't know if you want me to send you recordings, if so I can get some together by either tonight or tomorrow.

I've looked a bit into the arpeggio lessons you sent. sweep picking is a challenge for me though I'm getting a bit better. My desire is to be able to see patterns on the fret board while I play so that I can write more complex pieces.

I apologize again for not having as much time this week as I would have liked. My job is pretty crazy but I want you to know that I am committed to this and that I'm very appreciative of your time and the lessons you've created.

don't know where we go from here. I will keep working on everything and I will try to incorporate some of the arpeggio stuff into back-track jamming.

Thanks again.

Thrash till death,

Ben Farr

Hi Ben! Thanks for the update! I live in Buenos Aires. Curious about my neiborhood? Check it out: Google Earth.

It's good to know that you are motivated and trying to work the more you can. In order to go for the next routine, I would need to see you playing the lessons assigned on the first routine so I'll wait for some audios or videos from you playing them, deal?

Hey Gabe,

I should have recordings to you by tonight. I have not perfected the lessons yet but I am making progress. I'm running around for work but I'll have you the recordings in a few.

Hi Benfar, thanks for the audios!

Metallica's lesson is sounding good! The riffing sections is tight and now it just needs more time of practice to be able to play it faster over the backing tracks. It's important to focus on dynamics during the rhythm sections since Thrash metal requires strong picking, and accentuation of the strong beats. Listen to my take and pay attention to it. The solo section needs to be polished yet, but it's on the right track. Your timing on legato and trills is note tight, and there is a bend missed at 01:30, as well as some unwanted noises here and there.

Neoclassical lesson is also on the right track and now it's time to polish it. There are some moments when your playing is not totally clean. There are unwanted noises that appear here and there and you need to use the palm of your right hand and your left hand index finger to avoid them. The problem appears mostly when you cross strings but also when you do bending. Listen to your audio, identify the noisier parts, isolate them and practice.

Next week I'd like to hear you playing this one over slow backing tracks.
