your techniques always seem so fluid and effortless. My question is that when I was learning to pick, I relied on a book by Frank Gambale titled Speedpicking . however I notice that everybody here preaches alternate picking. could you tell me the benefits of AP

sorry to trouble you with yet another picking question

That's veeery old question but I'd be pleased to answer the best I can. smile.gif

Here's the deal, economy picking(FG style) is great for certain patterns,3nps,
some 2nps repetitive patters etc.
It sounds very smooth since you are using one motion to play 2 strings in a row.
But you probably miss attack and aggression with this type of picking.
Now,if you wanna play ONLY FG stuff then stay with economy only.
But I'm sure you like many other things as well, that's where alternate comes to scene.

Alternate picking is kind a mother of all picking.
It gives you attack, power, better accuracy in future etc.

So I would suggest to focus yourself on alternate.
DON'T STOP to practice economy
but let alternate be your main weapon, yeah. smile.gif

Absolutely,I know the feeling.
I started with AP,then I went to EP (thanks to Mr.FG biggrin.gif ) and finally
I came back to AP again with EP in my left pocket, kind of.
It takes time,changing picking types.
Just don't be a slave of only one picking type, combine, experiment. smile.gif
