Hi Superize! How are you?

This is your thread for the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=43110&st=0 mentoring project. I have seen lots of REC takes by you so I know your musical tastes as well as your playing abilities. I would like to know what are the goals that you have in mind choosing me as your mentor. If it's possible please share here the most difficult solo and rhythm lesson that you have recorded.

The principles of our Army are:

+ Improve your technique
+ Make music and solos
+ Have fun
+ Destroy the enemy (hahaha not realy just kidding... ph34r.gif )

So, let's start working hard!

Cool tunes mate! Well, this is the idea for this week.

Creativity Work:

You will analyse some of these songs structure and harmony. This is a template of what you should do.

Name of the song:
Name of the band:

Structure // What is happening? // Chords & Scales

Structure: You will divide the tune in Intro - Riff - Verse - Pre-chorus - Chorus - Solo - Part C and so... You can add the letters A, B, C to the sections when you find different ones in the same tune (Ex: Verse A, Verse B, Chorus, Solo A, Solo cool.gif.

what is happening?: Here you will describe each part. You can explain how is the part, if it has vocals, screams, melodies, harmonizations, how much is last, how many measures, etc. Every information that could be useful to understand the part.

Chords & Scales: Here you will post the tonality, the chord progression and the scales used for the melodies and solos.

Post you analysis using this concept here in one week.

Technique Work:

Regarding technique we will choose some lessons the next weeks, for this week I want you to work on the first lesson of my Intensive Technique Course.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=42825

Work on this exercises and record yourself playing it in 6 days. Concentrate on the sound, the volume of each note (it should be the same for each note), not on the speed. Play it the faster than you can but the limit must be when you start to loose clearness.

This would be all for this week. Do you think that you'll be able to have all the videos by the next Wednesday?

Ok before i begin i have a question.

Am i supposed to pick one of the songs for this week and tell you which?

This is something i don't do that much but it is a really good practice for me

This depends on how much time do you have and how much time does it take to you... If you work on 1 song is ok since this are complex lessons, but if you make time to work on more it is also ok.

One more question.. do you have any tune composed by your own?

Got one tune that i wrote with my band and we got 4 songs in the writing process

Great! Now I remember this tune! Thanks for sharing the video. This really helps me to have an idea of your writing abilities. wink.gif

Posted by: superize Feb 28 2012, 10:13 PM

Hey Gabriel just a little quick progress update.

I have been working on analyzing Into the Fire by Sabaton and i got a pretty good grasp on whats going in that song.

I have been working a bit on the exercises you gave me.

I wont be able to upload videos by Wednesday since i don't have any time a lot of time. Friday i got more time so i will upload videos by then if nothing unexpected comes up.

I hope this is ok

As promised here are this week tasks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 3 2012, 05:31 PM

Hi mate! Got it! The technique exercises sound really good! Great job!! The exercise number 3 is the one that seems to be more difficult for you but that's because finger 3 and 4 usually has less independence. The next step with this ones would be to increase your speed but also to play them for some minutes without stopping, have you tried it?

I'll be back regarding the song's analysis and with new assignments but I would like to know... are you working on any lessons now?

Hey mate! You did a great tutorial for this song! It's very clear, great job!

I followed the whole song and I noticed that it has the chord progressions and structure of a classic metal song, mostly like the power metal bands. The only different thing that I noted is that they modulate in the solo to C minor and then they go back to G minor again for what you called "bridge" and the last chorus. That's a very interesting idea used. Most of the chord progressions are the kind that bands like Maiden, Helloween or Running Wild would use...

Our next step will be to create a song based on this structure, and as this is a "exercise" song we can borrow some ideas from this song. Let's take the structure "melodic intro - intro riff - verse - pre-chorus - chorus (same than intro) - verse - pre-chorus - chorus - solo (modulated) - bridge - chorus".

So, the first step would be to write a cool intro melody and a riff... what daw do you use? do you know how to program drums?

what do you think?

This sounds cool

I use reaper and i have everything i need to record a whole song so no problems there.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 4 2012, 05:31 PM

Great! Could you create 3/5 ideas for the main riff of the song and post them here?

Posted by: superize Mar 4 2012, 10:07 PM

Sure i can do that

Hey! I really like that riff! I played over it and it seems that the best progression would be:

(Am - F G - Am - C G)

Do you have this progression in mind?

Yes that is the progression i have in mind

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 7 2012, 05:51 PM

Ok, let's give shape to this introduction. We can go for the same idea than the Sabaton song, just accentuated the last chord of the first round and then starting with a double kick groove... or we can also accentuate some parts of the riff in the first round.
You can decided which option you choose and write the drums and bass for the first part.

Another option for this riff progression could be:

(Am - C G - Am - C Dm)

Here i have made some drums for the intro part

The hihats are not supposed to be there, i just used them to keep the tempo

Love that Breaking the law feel!! smile.gif smile.gif

Great job mate! Now you can complete the section with the second time adding the drum's groove. An we have to start thinking on the verse's progression. Do you know minor tonality? In other words.. Do you know what chords you can use for this tune that you are composing in A minor?

Ok Gabe now i have added all the instruments to the intro and here is how it sounds

http://soundcloud.com/isac-lundqvist/sabaton-song-intro

I added a rythm guitar part aswell

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 10 2012, 08:35 PM

Hi mate! Good new version! I like the changes that you did to the first drums accents... however I feel that everything is a bit slow when the drum groove starts. This could be solved in two ways... 1. Doubling the drum loop to make it faster. 2. Setting a faster tempo for the song.
I prefer the first option but you can also check the second one and see what happens. Let me know if I'm clear.
The rhythm guitar sounds great!

Ok here is a recording with everything up to the solo part

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 11 2012, 05:42 PM

Wou man! You are very inspired today!! It's great to see this song growing! I'm not very sure about the new tempo, it's a bit accelerated for me, maybe we can add 5 or 10 bpm to the slower one. I'm now preparing everything to a Cirse's gig but I'll be back with more comments for the longer part. However I think that you should continue on the song!! Let's go for a modulated solo with some harmonized ideas and and shredding!

Posted by: superize Mar 16 2012, 03:02 PM

Hey gabe

I would be happy if you can give some more pointers on the latest update of the song.

And also i would like to get some more exercises to improve my technique

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 16 2012, 05:55 PM

Hi mate! I've been listening to the song and I have some suggestions.

+ I think that the modulation of the pre chorus is cool but it arrives too early in the song. I would use that part as a bridge or solo backing after the second chorus. There I would add a simpler progression for the bridge. Maybe something similar to the pre chorus in the song "The evil that men do" by Maiden?. It would be for example VI - Im - VII - VI VII.

+I feel that the riff doesn't have the impact for a chorus... maybe it's because of the tempo... is this the final tempo that we had set?

+As I said you could use the the current bridge of pre chorus as a musical section after the second chorus, and then you could play the intro riff backing (that you are using as a chorus now) as the backing track for a cool solo. What do you think?

Regarding technique.. let's go for this two lesson that includes some cool exercises for alternate picking.

Here is a solo from a song from my band

tell me what you think

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 18 2012, 08:38 PM

Hi Superize. The first thing that I think that isn't helping is the backing, the drum loop is so simple and that quits emotion to the solo in general. Regarding the composition, I think that it starts cool, all the rocker bends and melodic lines sound good, but when you play faster sections the solo becomes more predictable. Also the connection between the tapping part and the previous melodic idea isn't smooth.. the same happens between the last fast part and the previous melodies. Some notes at 00:30 sound weird as well as the last note of the solo. I would add some double strings bends and also stronger vibrato. The style of the backing and also of your solo reminds me to Edguy... check out this song's solo to take some ideas. Their double string bends, rocker licks and harmonized melodies make the solo more explosive and epic.

starts at 04:24
