Compressor Pedals, whats the go |

Well, what pedal do you use? Maybe its the pedal itself it is not working. Is it new? Is the LED indicator lid?

Well I guess the compressor built in your vox is just basic..Maybe go to the store and try out some boss compressors and try to tweak them a little and you will definitely see the difference.Compressor is a nice thing to have in your pedalboard..

Do you like Behringer gear Matt ? I saw that they made some copies of pedals and that they cost something like 20e , but never tried them..How do they work compared to boss ?

To put it simple - it compresses the signal - meaning that it makes quieter stuff louder and louder stuff quieter, thus making your signal more compact and "tighter".
Well, I wouldn't really rely much on built in effects. If you really need a compression pedal, buy compression\sustainer from boss. It is a great pedal for boosting leads. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

I would like to add one thing here,
you can't "hear" much difference in distorted tone while using compressor but you can "feel" it in playing,tones are longer,you don't have to pick that hard etc. But if you're using compressor on clean sound, than difference is more easier to notice,hear and feel.

I agree - its a very subtle effect and can be used for sustain. It comes more into its own when you are mixing songs. For guitar though, a compressor can be used as a kind of level booster for tube amps - gives you more sustain and better distortion. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

+1 with Muris and Andrew. It's partly as a distorted signal already has a high degree of compression - hence you don't 'hear' much variation but as Muris says it is there and you can definitely feel it. A clean sound is more likely to have a wide dynamic range and so compression shows up more. As Andrew says many of the best uses (not all though) of compressors for guitar involve a degree of subtlety - unlike most effects you don't want the processing to jump out and shout at you, it's often more about making you playing sound smoother and more controlled. Compressors are imo one of most under-rated processors which is a real shame as they can do an awful lot once you've got used to using them.

I'm not Matt obviously but my impression is that they work fine. I think they do their best to copy other pedals in detail and the end result is similat. Like the Ibanez tubescreamer that they use the same chip inside and make the look similar too. Same with octave pedals etc etc etc, they make sure the model name gives a lead to what was copied or the color or the looks. What I don't like about these pedals are that they are made of plastic, probably the life span is shorter than metal pedals, not because of the electronics break but they get stomped into pieces. Another thing is that changing a battery - the Digitech approach to press a pin och each side and the lid pops open - always is troublesome. But IMHO there's nothing one can complain about with the sound produced if run on batteries. I've only tested the EQ pedal side by side with the original and there the Behringer makes plenty more noice with a transformator connected. Maybe a metal cover would work more as shielding compared to plastic, I don't know. But this is not a problem really since if I play at home I use power adaptor and the noice doesn't bother me in that situation, playing live I always use batteries anyway.
