GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Gibson Raw Power Series

Posted by: bluetag May 11 2010, 11:17 PM

Hey guys just wondering what you think about gibsons new raw power series. All maple sgs and lp's with maple necks too.

i've played the sg raw powers i like the feel of the neck they also seem somewhat heavier than a standard sg. would you get one?

There was a thread about them somewhere...

Anyways they are all Maple which makes them extremely heavy (dense wood). I liked the tone, very tight and 80s-Hardrock-like and not too bright at all

It's just wrong sad.gif I'm against all kinds of progress laugh.gif

ya i've been looking at these guitars maybe for a future purchase not sure though wheter i should go for a traditional sg/lp or these. the reason i like these is because of the neck. all my guitars have maples necks and for some reason rosewood feels like it drags when i play. not sure if thats just me or the wood hehe.

they look a little weird to me.. like the sg's more than the lp's.
but maybe the sound will be somehow modern, i would like to test one, i smell a lot of bite on those smile.gif

I like how they look a lot. I've wanted to try one, but I never see one around here. Gibson+maple neck? Awesome. Now I just wish they made Flying V raw powers wink.gif

Interesting. I like maple necks, but the whole maple body with no dye looks a bit dull to me. I'm curious to try one though. Maybe it works better for an SG than a LP, since part of the soul of LPs is the mahogany/maple top combination.

I really Hate them,
This Is not What Gibson Is Famous For,
This is not why these guitars are so much used
It look just terrifying

They make them painted.

Always liked the green one. And the yellow is kinda cool as well.

Black looks good. Quality wood is getting harder to get a hold of. They have made SG's with high grade Maple before, or Maple tops. But they were expensive. This is pretty much the original Fender strategy, lower cost guitar made with 2 pieces (sometimes 3) of wood, maple neck. At least they did not bolt the neck on, I don't want them to go to far askew from what Gibson is supposed to be. It is probably good marketing for Gibson to keep coming up with new products, even though most will be short lived. They still continue to produce the traditional product, and they do not put their name on cheap guitars. So basically still Gibson.

I finally got to play one of the SG's, Local music store has a few down here ($1000 though sad.gif ). And I must say it sounds really great, Its tone is much firmer I think than a normal SG, Although I don't like how the guitar actually feels too much (I never do with gibsons so nothing new) but I think if I were to own one of these, It would make an excellent recording instrument.

Pretty much, like any Gibson, sounds good, But for me they feel to alien to play normally.

I think I heard one of these in action live and it sounded sweet! Lately I'm really into maple necks smile.gif)

Regardless, the fact is that 19 out of 20 beautiful women think a Les Paul or alternative Gibson looks sexier than a metal/shred guitar. Which leave one with a decision, who do you want attracted to you while on stage?

Him?

Or Her?

Hahaha biggrin.gif

Good one mate!

I played both Raw Power LP and SG, and played SG live, and it's very good guitar. The guitar is very light, and has piano-like sound on clean. Totally different feel from a traditional SG. Very hard to "tame" on distortion. I would get a traditional tho if you ask me..

ya i only put up a pic of maple cause thats all i could find at the time hehe i hear they resonate more too. would you say this is a good guitar to get into gibson from fender or should i go for a more classic gibson beat ala sg and lp standard for more progressive rock stuff

Posted by: Fran May 15 2010, 11:54 AM

These are nice, but if you are getting your first Gibson I'd go for a classic model instead, at least that's what I do but maybe it's because there are certain models & color combinations which have lived in my memories for so long that I just love them smile.gif
