Hi
Last month we did really good with some neoclassical backing and you learned some new scales. In this one I hope you won't find anything unfamiliar. This is about pentatonics and a couple of different common modes. Actually, Monte asked for Satriani type of backing and I promissed I would do it.
The chord progression is very simple:
A5 - A pentatonic of your choice
E5 - E minor pentatonic
these 2 chords are repeated 4 times (16 bars)
then you have
C5 (2 bars) - Lydian
D5 (2 bars) - Mixolydian
And again:
A5 - A pentatonic of your choice
E5 - E minor pentatonic
these 2 chords are repeated 2 times (8 bars)
Tempo is 180.
Your tonal key center is E (minor) and this E5 chord is your resolution in the melody. You can think of it as G major as that's the paralel scale/chord to the E minor. Therefore your C chord will be Lydian and D will be Mixolydian. Please use these 2 chords for these modes, do not stay in pentatonic here. I said that A can be pentatonic of your choice. If you start with A minor pentatonic then go on with that choice on every A5 chord. You can chose to do A dominant pentatonic (1, 2, 3, 5, b7) - something like mixolydian. If you go for this option then please keep it until the end whenever you have that A5. In this case your A5 will sound more (major). You can also use some blues b5 passing notes if you find it interesting. Notice that I resolve on E major riff when I land on the E5 but you can still play E minor pentatonic and it will work. That way you'll sound more in Satriani style
I called this collaboration "Satriani style" because the backing reminds of his old known fast grooves like Surfing With The Alien or Crushing Day. But you don't need to play in Satriani style. Play whatever you want just make some nice melody and involve some cool rock licks. There is plenty of space for playing pretty much anything from tapping, picking... you can even play with your boots like Ritchie Blackmore hahaha, but please keep some logical structure so your solo has some compositional quality.
The deadline is April 26th (Sunday) - 2 weeks and 2 days.
I will be away from 12th until 26th so I won't be able to reply everyday. You can still ask anything you want and I'll do my best to find internet at least every 3rd day.
I hope I'll receive some great takes this month
See you.

Emir, should I go for this solo? I end it really badly by the way, but what do you think so far?
Emir.... You are the Best xD This backing track is of the hinches

And hinches... err no idea
is there an upload track for this one ?!? or do we just post here?
Here is my take
It's soooooooo hard to be creative in this backing...
why didn't you make an example take Emir?!
I was gonna wait and post next weekend after I had it cleaned up but I can just re-record it. Maybe this will help anybody who might be stuck on this one. I took a lilttle bit different approach than Emir suggested. On the A5-E5 section I went with "A Ionian and E mixolydian" rather than "A dorian and E minor".....just sounded better to my ear. On the C5-D5 section I went with C lydian and D major pentatonic. Then I went back to "A Ionian and E mixolydian". Let me know what you guys think.
took a while for me to get in the groove for this one, anyways I gave it a shot

I have some bad news, Emir!
I was going to record something today, but I absolutely cannot find my Pandora PX4D. I think I might have left it at my parents house. Unfortunately they've been at work, when I've been home, I've been at work, when they've been home/asleep, so I haven't had the oportunity to ask them yet. Even if I have left it there, I'm not surely I'll be getting it untill after the 26th.
Hi
Here is my take. I had a really good time with this one.

Here's my take!
The first one in the list contains some reverb and a pretty strong delay - I finally managed to send the a dry signal separately to my DAW while I monitored the "wet" one, but in this file I exported the tone with the delay and reverb. The other two files contain the dry tone with and without backing.
I guess this was one of my most difficult collabs that I participated in... but thanks for the opportunity and special thanks to Monte who requested the backing

Ive got some serious problems with the scale switching:X Can't do it that fast:DAaah wait.
So It's G major (for the E minor) And G Lydian & Mixolydian for the C And D? If so, I think I can do it:DAh yes , sounds pretty cool now:D
How do I figure out a "relative major"? Say, You've got E mixolydian, which has the relative major of A . How do I know that? ( I read this example on a youtube backing track's video)
Scale switiching doesn't mean you need to jump to a different position. eg. if you're playing C lydian from position VIII on the fretboard then to switch to E mixolydian, you can stay around the same position by playing either C# phrygian or B dorian.
Easy way to figure out relative major or minor -
For a major key, relative minor is three semitones lower (C major - rel min = Am)
For a minor key, relative major is three semitones higher (G minor - rel maj = Bb major)
Relative keys share the same key signature
Ok, but , e mixolyidian is C# phryigian. so its lowerd, the C# is the relative minor? How dpp I know what mode to use? Or is that the worst question ever?
Here's my take.
Harmoniiiiiiiiiiics:P
Here be my effort.
I struggled finding the right groove and feel for this and left it right until the last minute to come up with something. Fortunately once I found decided which mode/feel to use I got into it, but that was the most difficult thing - try to decide what I preferred. Also, I thought that with a major/mixolydian quality this should resolve on Amaj so I ended it with that good old A power chord.
If I get any better ideas and have the time to record them, I'll update my take. If not I hope this will do ;p Great backing track btw

EDIT: After following some of the feedback for previous collabs I noted that a mono track for the guitar would be better, so here it is (last chord also deleted):
[attachment=15317:Artemus_...NoBTmono.mp3]
Im sad to say that i dont think i will be able to participate in this one.. My computer speakers fried out and im currently with out any backups.. Im still deciding on which ones i want to get to replace them with
Ok Emir,
Here's my take.
I've been struggling with the sound quality of my final mixes from Sonar. The "clarity" of the mix is much better within Sonar, then no matter what I mix down to even before converting to MP3 (24bit, 44100, or even 32bit 88200) something gets lost. In the resulting wav file, the reverb and delays sound boomy, and I loose "crispness" (probably some highs). Then when I go to MP3, it gets only sligtly worse. It seems likes most of the losses are when going to .wav from Sonar. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. If you have any pointers for final mix, it would be great.
As for the playing, I'm not 100% satisfied with this. Partially due to the tone, but also partially because my legato is kind of sloppy sounding. Let me know what I should be working on to clean this up. It doesn't sound too bad when you bury it in chorus, auto-wah, delay and reverb though!

P.S., I tried to make the one with no effects above a mono mix. Still the size of the file came out the same. I suspect that it is mono, but the same data is present on right and left tracks (so effectively a stereo mp3 file).
Would love to have a lesson on that backing track as well. Awesome!
Jim.
I'll post my take later on today
Sorry, have to skip this one. Too much on my hands right now..
Here ya go Emir....I would have liked to clean it up a little but I am in the middle of switching DAW's so I won't be able to. For your next collab though I should be able to do some step recording instead of having to do everything in one take. Thanks again for doing this backing for me Emir....YOU ROCK!!! \m/\m/
Emir, I have a problem I like the BT,and I have the first four bars, but I can't find anything beyond that!!!
I have all the track done but still not to keen on how I play one lick cause I did fast legato, gonna try recording it tomorrow or else I give up
Really hard to get something going for me on this one I will however record something now and hope it's ok even if I upload it after midnight?
Well here are my tracks.
This is more of a constructive improv. Played with the backing a handful of time and then hit record. I know I probably resolved on the root to much.
If the collab is extended I will try to work with the idea more.
Had fun with the backing track! Thanks for the collab!

Hey Guys, here's my take
@Sergio: Great entrie! Very technical!
Hi guys
I have just arrived from 2 weeks holiday. Crazy time I had there I have just flew through your posts quickly and seen some comments and Monte's video (cool take). I need to sit down and spend some more time reading all your posts. I have seen more people wanted to join but I didn't have internet to put them on the list. I am sorry I couldn't follow this topic in the last 2 weeks but whoever wants to record something please post it and I'll add the names later in the list of participants. You can send takes tomorrow as well as I will not start mixing today.
Cheers
Welcome back, Emir! I´ll do my take just right now.
Glad you are back Emir.....how long do you think it is going to take you to "recover" from your "trip".....
I'll send my take tomorrow Emir, I recorded it one week ago but now I am not really pleased with it.
It's good to have you back Emir. I hope that you had a great Holiday!
I tried to record it, but I have so much problems with timing now. Might be because I´m tired. Is it ok if I do it tomorrow?
Thanks guys for a warm welcome back You can send takes tomorrow if you like.
Monte, I need a couple of days man - that's not healthy teritory over there haha
Here´s my take. There are a lot of timing problems which I have to correct. But not now, I´m k.o. and this was the best take I could do. Some parts are improvised.
Hi Emir, welcome back!
I uploaded a better set of tracks for you to mix with. Guitar one is mono for sure because I double checked. Also, the rendering I used while converting to mp3 in the first set made things sound a little brite. I realized the signal was really week to! Hope these will make your mixing effort easier. Of course feel free to use whichever ones you want.
Cheers
Hi emir ,
Im out of ideas at the moment, Ill rest and record something tomorrow if thats ok.
Thanks a lot.
I am not happy with the tone change when I upload my tracks lately and I'm not sure what to do? It sound's warm and good here but, when I upload a track it does the youtube thing and makes things sound loose and brite! I down load the same track I uploaded, play it at the same volume and it still sounds the same (bad). Completely different then the same track I just uploaded which sounded goood before the upload!!
Do you have any advice? Has something changed on GMC's upload end and what it does with compression or something?
Hey Emir,
I got lots of things going on in my life right now and I think I've lost the will of playing guitar so I won't be able to make any new recordings. I hate to make a show about this but really everything looks grim, even my fiance left me. I feel lower than every down, and I don't think I'll recover from this in a short period. But a word is a word, and I gave you one, so here is a very basic and improvised take for this collab. I tried to use my weakest points like left and vibrato, legatos and whammy bar. Please be as strict as you can possibly be about this, maybe a slap may wake me from this nightmare.
Although I have a take ready I don't want to record it until I've completly dominate it so I'll skip this one also Sorry Emir :/
