I know there's been topics about musicians giving advice about practicing (for example Guthrie Govan's), but I thought we collect them in one single topic!

Here are two inspiring videos for all of you guitarists out there smile.gif

Satch, talking about the importance of theory:

Tommy Emmanuel talking about repetition and enjoying the music:

Great thread idea Dinaga! I don't have much to add, except this great video from/about my personal favorite local guitarist "Scott Pemberton"!

I am gonna be the guy who puts up the Yngwie Video then. smile.gif He has a good point here about "Earning it".

Whenever you hear anyone play and do it well. They've earned. You can't really fake being good. It doesn't take a great musician to recognize someone faking it badly. So stay focused on the goal and try to enjoy the journey as much as you can. Once you reach a spot where you are happier with your playing, it's something nobody can ever take from you. And something you can really be proud of. You can't buy it, can't steal it, can't lie/beg/borrow to get it, you have to earn it.

Practice!

That's a really great clip of Yngwie's thoughts. It's rare to see him so honest and candid and everything he says is true. You gotta follow your vision no matter if others understand it or not.

I love it when he says 'Water off a duck' laugh.gif

Great inspiration. I think we are all trying to find our own voice, I think the majority of people on this site have figured out guitar isn't just about getting the chicks. Its about expression. I have something inside that wants guitar to be my vehicle for expressing myself. I am very glad I found this site again. Its like the old saying "When the student is ready, the master will appear.". Well I am honored to have the help of so many masters. thanks!

I couldn't have said it better myself. Expression! The bigger your music vocabulary is and the better your technique is, the better you can express yourself and share your ideas with the world. That's what it's all about!

Tell me about it! I gotta say in many videos he comes off quite bad and seems a bit full of himself. But here is straightforward and down to earth which is part of what made me want to use this clip. Some really great clips and advice in this thread!.

Joe Satriani says it like it is, and I love how he says it. Nothing else to say really. cool.gif

Tommy Emmanuel made me LOL about not playing in front of family ~ that's why my practice hours are from 10:00 p.m. til around 2:00 a.m. I'll actually leave my house and head for my studio which is about 15 minutes away so I can be loud and not disturb anyone smile.gif

Thanks for those links Dinaga. Real gems.

Chris

PG used to stand for Parental Guidance. It should be changed to Paul Guidance which is obviously way more useful and important !

Glad you liked it mate, it is a real food for thought! Yeah, Tommy's right about it - "Wee need to practice, but nobody else does" biggrin.gif I'm lucky enough to have my own floor so I don't have to worry about blasting my parents' ears biggrin.gif

I also think Joe's very right about not over-practicing. We're supposed to make music, not practice scales all our life.

All in all, iIt's really great we have the chance to absorb all this advice from the people who are among the best in something we do.

His humbleness makes him a supernatural being in my eyes. He gives so much priceless information yet remains so humble. In other video he talked about repetitiveness and said "I like when something repeats, that means I don't have to think about it very much". What a guy.

I watched the Steve Vai video again... This should REALLY be a MUST SEE for every guitarist. Every musician!

I have to post another one, which ties up nicely with the previous Gilbert video... Playing melody over rhythm ideas is a really useful weapon in creative roadblocks! A real phrasing tool.
