GMC Forum _ Marcus Lavendell _ Tapping Noise

Posted by: Kizaze44 Jan 17 2008, 10:51 PM

Marcus,

I really appreciate the way you incorporate tapping licks in our solos - exactly the way I'd like to it. After much practice, I can manage to get all my fingers in the right places and do some cool licks like the one you do in "Evening Blues". However, I can't seem to shake the noise when moving from one string to another - especially going from the b to e strings when doing a minor scale tapping run.

How does one mute that darned string if your right hand is busy tapping?? Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Kizaze, and thank you! smile.gif

Well, first I must say that I haven't studied much how other guitarists do this, so I can only tell you how I do it. I guess there are few different ways though...

Anyways, my answer is really simple: - Mute the string with your left hand on those notes, instead of the right hand. I know that's easier said than done, especially when going to the E-string from the B-string smile.gif

So when I'm on the E-string, I try to very very slightly touch [read: mute] the B-string with the top of my left hand index finger.

If you want, I can try to take a photo of it so you also can see what I'm talking about. smile.gif

Thanks for the tip Marcus, I was struggling with the same problem in your "Historical Failure" solo´, but this seems to work! smile.gif

OT: Must be nice being endorsed by Elixir! That must be one of the many keys to your tone, but we other mortals will have to buy mediocre crap strings because we neither can afford nor get an endorsement deal on 'em. biggrin.gif But seriously, how does an endorsement deal like that work? I mean, do you get like 10 sets of strings each month or what?

Regards,
Seagull (Who is expecting another lesson from Mr. Lavendell soon! biggrin.gif )

Hey Seagull,
I'm glad it helped smile.gif

I think these endorsement deals are individual and I'm not really allowed to talk much about the details. But I can say that It's not like I have unlimited sets of free strings! I get a whole bunch of them each year, but then If I need more I can buy them at an "artist price" (only for personal use of course) smile.gif

You'll recognize it as it being possibly the only blue cottage/house in Sweden. Everything is so damn red there and I can't take it biggrin.gif

Thanks Marcus!

No need for a picture - I'll study your lessons a bit more closely.
