GMC Forum _ Todd Simpson _ Video Games Anyone?

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 15 2012, 05:45 PM

Gaming is something that needs to be done in moderation of course, as it can take away practice time! But after nailing that impossible solo, you deserve a break! What's your pleasure? Platformer? PC? Thought I'd start a tread in my forum on Games that I"m playing/played/wanted to share/learn about/ask you guys about etc. A bit of gaming is good for the soul!

THIS POSTS BIG QUESTION:

MASS EFFECT 3 ANYONE?

The Demo for MASS EFFECT 3 is available for Xbox360. PS3 and PC. Here is the link. If you see me online my XBOX live id is RG560

It's been a long time since I used to play video games at home, that passion was changed by guitar when I was around 13. However I played Wii for the first time yesterday and it was awesome. I played Houses of the holy and Resident Evil. Great ones!

As you guys know I'm still stuck in the dark ages with my ps2 wink.gif

But I like action, horror.. when it comes to games I have quite a violent streak ! laugh.gif

Currently going through Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory again.

Since I just got a beefy computer I have been gaming on it. Last game I beat was yesterday, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, currently playing Crystalis.. So demanding of my pc. laugh.gif After I get done with some old school NES games I'm going to play Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning tho.

I may pick up twisted metal for the ps3 next week just to play with some friends online.

About a year ago I really stopped playing video games just because, as Gabriel said, it was replaced with guitar. I would love to if I still had the time, but in my position, I'd rather be gaining a skill that I could potentially make a career out of then playing cod 5 hours a day wink.gif

Posted by: Fran Feb 16 2012, 05:18 PM

PS3 here.

Though I din't play much for months, I'm now having a great time with Kingdoms of Amalur. For my taste, the best RPG on the platform, and even the best RPG I've played, not counting MMORPGs.

Until a couple of months ago I used to play WoW extensively, until it got really boring cause I had seen all of it and I'm not a collector who would do the same stuff over and over again just to get better equipment wink.gif
I also liked Starcraft 2, finished the campaign, but don't really care for multiplayer.
Currently I'm waiting for Diablo 3 smile.gif
Oh, and I won a Wii, Mario Kart and Top Spin 4 are fun to play!

I remember the PS2! I used to love that thing smile.gif I got waaaaaay in to Street Fighter and some other fight style games. Haven't played PS2 in several years though. I should pull the old girl out for some vintage fight carnage!

Small world! I won Wii as well! It was when they first came out a while back. Very cool platform. However, as you'll notice most of the games are kids / families / etc. There are a few exceptions of course but the lack of good titles is what made me pull the system out of my media room and give it to my brother who teaches primary school. It's been a big hit with his class.

Video games are a big part of my life. But I'm more of an old-school gamer! I love the good old 8-bit NES games, SNES / Sega games and earlier PC and Playstation games. My favorite game ever is an adventure/RPG named Planescape: Torment. It's about 15 years old and has really rusty graphics, but I've never played a game with better storyline. Those days, I slept roughly only 4 hours a day between my hours and hours of obsessive playing before I finally finished it biggrin.gif The story is just too good that you have to play it and read every single dialogue because you're so curious what's going to happen next! I LOVE that game. smile.gif Just writing this makes me want to play it again smile.gif

Also, I'm a fan of old classics like Tekken 3, Diablo 2, Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Castlevania, Mega Man, Quake 2, Colin McRae 2, GranTurismo 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series... I even wrote walkthroughs on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 and a Yoshimitsu manual for Tekken 3, I think they're still online somewhere on GameFAQs biggrin.gif

I think today's games have much better graphics, but are nothing too special... They're usually too easy, predictable, too much multiplayer-oriented and there's no originality which was present in the old games, when game designers had all the freedom they wanted. It became an expensive industry which makes thousands of Call of Duty clones because it's a formula that "works". But basically they are usually the same games with different names. I might be too harsh on this, but I guess I'm too nostalgic of the good old times when games had less money, and more soul involved!

This is where balance comes in. I'd certainly hope no GMC student would spend 5 hours a day playing video games. I sometimes play a game with pals on xbox live for a quick bit on weekends which is where games are best kept IMHO. As a fun distraction. For many students, especially those in the first 3 or 4 years of learning, video games can easily take over practice time and turn in to bad thing. Eve for those with extensive musical practice/training, they remain a possible time suck.

So again, it's all about balance. You can play a game to relax, blow off steam, etc. Just don't let it eat in to your practice time!

Wow! An actual gamer! smile.gif I was a HUGE fan of the Tekken series as well back in the day. And also quake and even Unreal. I used to game more in the ps2 days. Some really great games from then smile.gif Now it's more about xbox live and playing with friends a bit here and there on weekends.

Yeah I kind of agree with you here. Shadowman is a really old PS1 game with awful graphics and controls but the storyline is epic. Nightmare Creatures is another game with dated graphics and dodgy controls but the atmosphere on that is incredible !!

No epic story lines? Guys! I'm guessing neither one of you played the original BioShock game? I have to say, killer story, plot twists, epic drama, just amazing. Almost sounds like "They don't make make em like they used to...." etc? I actually try to share games that I think are actually worth anyone's time in my game posts. A bit ago I played through a game called ALICE which was a dark, twisted take on the Alice in wonderland story and it was just amazing. The writing was awesome, story was compelling and game design was some of the best I"ve ever seen and I've seen quite a few games wink.gif The art design, sound design, graphic design, all of it was just epic/mind blowing/awesome. Better than any movie/game/anything I've seen in years. There is some amazing, inspiring, game content out there guys. Games have taken over for movies in terms of original story telling/new music IMHO. Movies seem to have gotten stale, boring, while games (the good ones) still take chances.

I"m not saying you should skip practice to play games. Never. Just that if you are going to play a game now and then, pick a good one smile.gif Which is why I review games here on GMC that I think are worth a darn. Here is a link to my ALICE review and a few pics for starters smile.gif

P.S. BEN: Tekken rules! smile.gif My fav was Tekken Tag Tournament where you could tag out and switch to a fresh figher mid match!

Wow ! Just checked out your other thread about the Alice game.. looks amazing ! biggrin.gif

I guess you're right about the storyline stuff Todd, it's not true that they don't do epic anymore because they do. I guess what I feel is that everything is so impressive with graphics these days and there's so much 'crash, bang, whallop' that nothing impresses the kids anymore and they take it all in their stride.

All the COD games ? They would have blown my mind if I'd seen those about 10 yrs ago.. but people are quite nonchalant about stuff like that now. However, the action is almost too relentless by trying to mirror real war scenarios that you don't get that atmospheric vibe that was in the very first Medal of Honour game, for example.

Great point! The first MOH game was KILLER for the immersive vibe and cool story. Felt like jumping in to history/war. Really well produced/done. A great game can draw you in much like a great movie. Too much about movies/games is all bang/boom/whallop IMHO so much so that it all blurs together. That's why Alice stood out so much. It's the exact other direction. If you ever get a chance, it's worth at least a rental.

For the last 10 years I was all in MMOs...Anarchy Online (still the best MMO for me), WOW, Aion, Age of Conan, Fallen Earth, Rift, SWTOR,....
I had some pauses in between but I always came back. But now as I started to play guitar again and a bit more seriously I quit em all and delted them all from my laptop biggrin.gif

ekhm...I am waiting only for Guild Wars 2 wink.gif But I doubt I will play longer than a month biggrin.gif
I also have Wii and tons of games but I rarely play although some of the Wii games are really epic, like Zelda series, some Mario stuff and Kirby....I also had XBOX 360 but exchange it for a small amp and a guitar for my daughter. Kids were furious about that lol biggrin.gif

Yeah, WoW was a huge time sink for me... luckily I quit playing about 2 years ago, practicing guitar is much more sensible ! wink.gif
Still, I am into Starcraft 2 , here and there a ladder game is fun and has a natural time limit of about half an hour maximum.

I have to say my GAME OF THE YEAR so far would be SAINTS ROW THE THIRD which I'm shocked at because it looked kinda stupid in the ads. I didn't play the first or second as they looked kinda silly too.

But WOW, zombies, wreslting, FPS, Jets, attack choppers, tanks, GTA style play, just awesome. It's like 500 games in one. I played the single player missions and it took so long I finally sent it back to gamefly as it was cutting in to my practice time! Be careful!

The original developer guy who made the first one such a killer title is back! The second one was a bit weak IMHO, forgive me of course if it's someone's "pet" game and they love it to pieces, but for my money it was lame. sad.gif But this next one looks like it could be on par with the first one.

Posted by: Fran Mar 30 2012, 08:47 AM

Just yesterday I started and finished "Journey" for PS3. Just 3 hours long, maybe even less.
After playing it I don't understand the hype around it. Pretty slow, sub-par graphics although stylish, and a very dissapointing ending for my taste (no spoilers).
Only good thing about it was the music.

Also, pretty expensive for a 2-3 hours game, at 13 €.

I guess I'm alone in my thoughts about it since everyone and their mother is giving it a 9/10 score.

I've never owned either, only played on copies owned by other people, but I know what you mean. The second paled in comparison to the first's story, apparently.

I don't trust the 'traditional' review sites such as IGN anymore, I stopped reading their reviews a long time ago. I'd rather listen to somebody like Totalbiscuit (of YouTube fame) discuss the game, or I'll watch a few parts of a playthrough.

I never really gamed much since the snes / megadrive days. I would occasionally fire up the snes and play an hour or so of streetfighter or super star wars but a gamer mate at work had been raving about skyrim when it came out. I eventually bought a copy on the PC and promtly got totally hooked!
It was a few months ago when I got it but I picked it up after work on a friday night and went back into work on monday morning with 22 hours gameplay under my belt LOL! I really got a bit obsessed with it for a month or so rolleyes.gif It was AWESOME! really like that game.
I dont think I have ever played a game as much as I played skyrim. Even back when I considered myself a bit of a gamer!

Rage is probably a great rental game, it is rather short. After about a 3rd run to the same place I took it back. If you haven't played Bulletstorm I recommend it, I enjoyed it a ton.

The Legemd of Grimrock:

Playing this game right now - it's fantastic. Came out last week, it's a dungeon crawler with fairly basic mechanics, and the overall idea and look is simple, but really well done. It's around £10, so roughly $20.

If anybody is interested in playing the two that were suggested above, Bulletstorm was on sale for $5 last week, and I believe RAGE can be bought for $5 right now.

Posted by: dark dude Apr 18 2012, 11:14 PM

Also, with regards to the Witcher 2, it's a very adult-orientated, mature, 'we're not writing for the kids'-type game (just got this info. off a gaming podcast), so it may be something very different to what you're used to, and after seeing the CGI trailer for the enhanced edition, how can you not want to play it?

I managed to avoid DIABLO and WORLD OF WARCRAFT and I gotta say I think I"ll continue to avoid them at this point. I'm a big fan of great games, but I've seen folks get disturbingly involved in these two particular titles. They must contain GAMING CRACK.

D3 beta was fun, suprised it ran okay on my ancient PC smile.gif Won't be buying it, though.

I will, but I'm prepared for a let done. I actually lent my 360 to a friend a few months ago and my ps3 is unplugged. Nothing looks remotely good for either system any time soon.

Last game that got me hooked was DC universe online on PS3. Only played for a couple months since there wasn't enough content to get me hooked longer, and I'm glad I quit.

MMORPGs are like crack to me.

Right. No surprise there, they couldn't keep up with enough new content, and that's death for those kind of games.

Yeah, it's a good game - I saw it on sale for $10 2 weeks ago, on GameFly, so I'd wait for another sale and nab it. For that price, you can't lose!

I always recommend watching some gameplay on youtube, as many people do walkthroughs these days, so you can watch the first 30 min of the game, see what you think smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson May 3 2012, 01:14 AM

Wow that's cheap! IT'S 3 DVDs! It must be just huge. I gotta say sounds like a plan. The youtube clips look just amazing. They evidently were using this to show their new game engine. I honestly can't believe something this impressive in terms of visuals/graphics didn't make more of a splash. The game engine look's astounding. I looked it up and it's their show piece of what the engine can do. It's got to be the best looking xbox 360 game I've ever seen.

WOLFENSTEIN: THE NEW BLOOD

Really impressed with the game WOLFENSTEIN: THE NEW BLOOD. The graphics are killer, the WWII storyline is quite spiff, there are monsters and evil bits that get sorted with firepower. smile.gif

Worth a Rental and Liked it so much I bough it. Anyone else played it?

I did download BROFORCE for free and it's a hoot smile.gif A side scroller that looks like it's 20 years old but still wads of old school fun smile.gif I tried THE DIVISION from Tom Clancy but it seems very repetitive. Go to X location, kill everytone, take something, bring it to base, rinse, repeat.

I did like JUST CAUSE 3 and am looking forward to the expansion packs. It's sort of like grand theft auto (wihch I never got into) in that it's a big world with missions. But you can fly in your "squirel wing suit" and do crazy stunts and blow stuff up which is hard not to enjoy smile.gif You can hop in a tank and just go marauding. Very cathartic game.

Along with Ben Higgins and I"m sure a few others, I am playing the new version of DOOM!!! Or I will be playing it for about an hour or so, once it loads. It's taken about 20 minutes so far and is still trying to copy stuff to my PS4 internal drive.

WARNING: Games can be addictive and get in the way of practice so try to keep gaming to under an hour per day at most if possible. This means you will probably be behind your pals that game in terms of leveling up, etc. But don't get sucked in to that.

Posted by: Todd Simpson May 18 2016, 08:28 PM

DOOM is very fun but NOT FOR KIDS. It's packed with wads of game imagery that's just not going to let the little ones sleep well depending on the kid in question. Here is a pic. smile.gif

I almost forgot! DOOM IS EPIC!!

The campaign is awesome. It really is a bit sppoky and disturbing in parts which is what makes it have such an impact. Only when you find a mini doom doll in a satanic church under a research lab full of the devils minions do you remember it's just a game smile.gif

Last night I did something I thought was impossible for a bit and beat the "Extreme" versions (they make it harder after you beat the game) of a Level (#29 in Metal Gear Solid 5 called "Metal Archea") I never thought I'd beat. The secret.... Air Strikes!!! smile.gif
Anyone else played MSG5? If so, did you get to and or beat this level? If you were frustrated by it, here is how to beat it without going nuts.

It's on my "Game" channel on youtube Enjoy! PS4 makes it easy to grab/upload to youtube.

@fzalfa: I'm always surprised to see how a PC is holding up lately. My dad ran a 3.4 Core2Duo and a GTX680 for years playing Skyrim, Fable, Diablo 3, and so on.

@ Everyone Else: I'd love to get Doom, just that $60 price tag really kills it when I hear people say its under 6 hours for the campaign. I'm hoping it goes on sale during Steam's Summer Sale! biggrin.gif Me and a buddy have been doing a game day for many years now, I hardly game any other day. That way I don't get burnt out nor let it consume my life. We have been playing the Dark Souls series. All the way from Demon to Dark Souls 3 including Bloodborne. I no longer own a PS4, but if you like the Souls series give Bloodborne a shot it was really good.

I'm not currently playing a game at all, not really sure what I want to start on.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 7 2016, 04:38 AM

I use REDBOX (those kiosk things outside grocery stores) to rent games to avoid the crazy price tags. I"m using a console (ps4 now that I sold my xbox360) so I just rent the games and play the campaign mode mostly smile.gif It's 3 bucks a day to rent games at a Redbox, so usually just rent for the weekend smile.gif I'll keep an eye out for the ones you mentioned. Never played souls or bloodborne, so I"m up for giving them a go smile.gif

I loved MGS 5.... I can't remember if I did the extreme version of that level. I think I did... I just stayed on the roof and sniped them with the Brennan tongue.gif

That game made me interested in the rest of the series so I went and played them all in order after that, except MGS 4, which is only playable on PS3 - which I don't have. I just watched an entire playthrough instead. Out of all the games in existence, I think the story and emotional content of MGS is beyond anything.

Remember you were on about Wolfy: The Old Blood... well I got that the other day along with Bloodborne. I loved the New Order but I only recently got a PS4 so had to wait to play TOB.

Bloodborne is great.. I was unsure whether I'd get on with it because of its notorious difficulty and the fact that I'm not a patient man..... especially when it comes to games... but I love Bloodborne. It always leaves me wanted to go back and play more as soon as I can.

DOOM is epic. Ever since it was announced back when Wolfenstein The New order came out I've been waiting for it.

The campaign is longer than 6 hours I'd say, if you don't rush through it without paying any attention to the lore or exploring the maps. I took my time with it. But I always baulk at paying top coin for new games as well so I can understand your reticence. Wait a while and when it drops in price, grab it. It's just one of those games which feels good. Nothing to it but to kill demons.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 7 2016, 06:13 PM

I was so impressed with MSG5 that I bought it. I usually just rent games or just download the demo or what not. But this game was something special that I can't believe I'd missed when it came out. I'd never played any of the series as they looked to "stealth based" for my tastes, but in MSG5, you can go head to head with every foe and skip the stealth if you don't want to sneak about and just go Rambo instead smile.gif Which is what I ended up doing. Built out my entire base, it's HUGE. Completed all the missions and the "Extreme" versions of them. Now I"m doing the "infiltrations" where you attack other folks bases. The game is endless it seems so great value for money smile.gif

I have to agree that the emotional depth of the game was impressive. The story line with the female sniper named "Quiet" who first tried to kill our hero, then sorta falls in love with him, then has to leave after sacrificing herself to save him, was quite good. You actually felt something when she left.

Folks were so upset that she leaves, that they now can get her back if they play her capture mission 7 times in a row on extreme and capture not killer her every time. Needless to say that is a TALL order as one round from her rifle kills you on extreme.

Amazing game. I was wrong to judge it harshly.

Glad to hear you got a PS4!! CONGRATS! Amazing system smile.gif I had a 360 and went sony instead of xbox one. Wanted to get back to play station. Always preferred them honestly. Some of the titles that are playstation only are truly amazing. KILL ZONE SHADOWFALL is one of them. Not as emotionally deep as MSG5, but crazy fun and amazing graphics.

Glad you got the other Woflenstein game! I loved that as well smile.gif I"ll give bloodbourne a try too!

You can use USB connected external hard drives (2 Terrabytes per drive) now on your xbox 360. So no more "running out/low on space" warnings when you download new demos/games/saves etc. So it's time to attach some drives to your 360 smile.gif And you have to power it all, so...

I got the ps4 VR today. Put on VR Worlds and literally sat on the menu system for about 10 minutes! It was that awesome biggrin.gif
Ive never played any VR type stuff before so it was all a new experience. I 'played' the ocean decent first and it was just brilliant. you get lowered under water in a shark cage and when the cage first drops down you totally get a sense of movement, its really cool. The general immersion is great, when the shark attacks the cage its genuinely freaky. Cant wait to get some horror games, I can see me doing myself some serious psychological damage with those biggrin.gif
Really impressed with the system so far.

*** EDIT ****
stayed up far too late last night playing it rolleyes.gif all the games where you are in a cockpit or car are awesome. Drive club, Eve: Valkyrie, Scavenger's Odyssey - all great smile.gif the environment in Wayward sky was quite jaw dropping.
so it might not be occulus or vive but its damn good imo.

Its the future biggrin.gif

also, if you could plug in a real guitar and play a type of rockband VR game..... I would never leave the house.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Oct 30 2016, 06:50 PM

I hope to add the VR to my PS4 as well smile.gif The games are looking just killer. Can't wait to dive in to VR smile.gif I think OCCULUS had a great idea, but it seems the major vendors are going to put them out of business now that everyone from SONY to MICROSOFT to CELL PHONE companies have their own VR products. Not to mention, "wearables" are getting smaller and smaller to the point where VR glasses that connect to the smart phone and provide "enhanced reality" will eventually look no different than regular prescription glasses. Brave new world eh? smile.gif

I really am looking forward to it smile.gif The ehanched reality demo from Mickysoft was really spiff too. I think we are gonna see more and more of this. So I played the full campaign mode on TITAN FALL 2 and it was fun smile.gif But kinda short. About 10 hours or so on regular difficulty. They re-used some maps in multiplayer which I thought was kinda meh sad.gif Some new cool maps though. Lots of new modes.

Am i the only one that feels, that somehow the new games are getting kinda "dumb down", lazy perhaps?
Is just, a lot of stuff I see is basically the same recycled idea with fancier clothes?

Needless to say there is always a good gem, from time to time.

Sadly, I have to agree with ya!! The "Big Releases" are often the next CALL OF DUTY or clone of such.
The "UNREAL ENGINE" is the core of a shocking number of modern games. It's a pre built "core" with game bits ready to use. Some are used so often that certain maps in various titles feel very similar, because they are very similar smile.gif

I keep having "game deja vu" seeing sets/scenes/maps that are obviously based on the same template. Here is a link to a very long list of games that use the unreal engine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games#Unreal_Engine_4

If you have never heard of UNREAL, it's just a first person shooter game that was a competitor with QUAKE way back in the day smile.gif Both games revolved around "DEATH MATCH" essentially, kill as many as possible on the other side to win. The guts of unreal became so good, they started licensing it out to other game companies so that folks wouldn't have to re invent the wheel each time they wanted to make the next call of duty/clone.

Sadly, Titan Fall 2 falls in the GAME DEJA VU area for me as they even use old level maps with slight modifications and maybe a new game type (e.g. capture the flag in space).

It makes sense in that sequels to games that made money are safer bets than entirely original games that may or may not make money, just like the Movie Industry! smile.gif Xmen 12, Star Trek 15, etc. (remake/reboot/blah blah)

There are some original game experiences to be found in the quickly growing world of VR and hopefully that opens things up a bit for developers and players smile.gif I hope it leads to new types of games and not just call of duty VR. smile.gif

Todd, I actually am a big UT99 and UT2003 fan biggrin.gif . They are probably my all time fps games along with Serious Sam. Still played them nowadays.
One of my favorite activities is to get random albums from band i'v never listened before and just play mindlessly UT. I can get into this peace of mind state, which is pretty relaxing tongue.gif

I've never tried the VR's Oculus Rift kinda thing, but i am really looking forward to see how it evolves in the next couple of years.

While you have a point there, it's not the engine itself that's at fault. I'm a game developer myself, so I have first-hand experience with that kind of stuff. An engine can give you a lot of stuff for free but that "stuff" is usually not gameplay-related but technological in nature, e.g. rendering, culling or multi-core algorithms.

The real problem is that publishers take less and less risks anymore. For those who don't know, there is a difference between a studio and a publisher. The studio carries out all the implementation and technical work while the publisher does all the marketing and sale work. And usually the publisher is the one financing the whole game as well. So in most cases there is a hard dependency on the publisher. No publisher, no money. And in many cases the publisher has a huge say in what is being made and what not. I'm in the comfortable position that our studio has a lot of liberty in what we do. Sadly, that's not the case for many studios out there.

Now the problem is that there are some types of games that obviously sold very well and publishers try to recreate that scenario by doing something similar. True innovation is still out there but you have to look for indie developers (that means a developer without a publisher) more and more to get something truly new. But it's out there you just have to be willing to look beyond the big names. Just take a look at the Steam Early Access list and you will find many promising games in there.

I used to do the same thing smile.gif Put on some new music and just play unreal tournament for hours on end. Almost a meditative zen state once you get into the groove smile.gif I haven't played in quite a while though. Still one of the best ways to death match imho smile.gif The simplicity of it is great. Just the purity of the xperience imho. No nukes, etc.

Well said!! Great insight btw. The same ills that have claimed the MOVIE industry seem to have claimed the game industry as well. Seeking safety, as a result of pressure from piracy, in part, folks are taking less chances and making more sequels to games/movies. So much so that folks who have been playing games/watching movies for a while, get serious deja vu quite often.

I'm currently playing CALL OF DUTY INFINITE WARFARE (Speaking of endless call of duty games) and it does combine all the usual bits you'd expect. Grapple wire, first person shooter, fighter pilot game, stealth, big cut scenes, etc. I must say I did enjoy it though smile.gif But just as a rental. I don't plan on buying it. It's one game that uses the HAVOK engine instead of UNREAL smile.gif

BTW do you mind sharing any games you've worked on?

Sure, although I can't name any of the large titles you might expect wink.gif
The largest title I was a part of was Sacred 3 and that was anything but successful. This is actually a story where you can see how much a publisher can destroy a game. The Sacred series was always a well-known German Action-RPG series and had quite a dedicated following. When the original publisher went bankrupt they sold the license and it was acquired by Deep Silver. We (keen games) won the pitch to make the game (and the pitch was actually pretty close to what the series was all about). (A pitch is a prototype that shows what you as a studio can do and then the publisher picks the studio that made the best pitch. Kind of like a casting).

After that it all went downhill. Deep Silver was afraid to get into the ring with Diablo 3 which was due to come out pretty close to when we were scheduled to so they just took the name Sacred and wanted to make something completely different out of it. And they did. Much to our frustration and that of all the deceived players out there. One single event sums it all up pretty well: When the Avengers movie came out, the publisher took us all to the cinema and told us: "That's how we want the game to be". Just compare that decision with what Sacred stood for and that's all I need to say.
We certainly made mistakes as well, but basically the publisher overruled most of our decisions.

But enough dwelling in the past smile.gif
After that our company split up and I joined the branch concentrating on mobile games. Our current games are Royal Revolt II and Olympus Rising (which is a pretty similar game but in another setting). Especially Royal Revolt was (and still is) pretty successful. At least we have way more freedom to do what we want now and that's a pretty important thing.

Ah btw: we're called keenflare but that's most likely not a name any of you have ever heard. But that's fine smile.gif

Very cool that you are developing mobile games smile.gif IMHO that is where the market is heading. The "Console Era" seems to have reached a plateu in terms of growth while mobile is growing like a weed. Mobile has the potential to faaaaaar eclipse the numbers of console gaming. In simple terms, nearly everyone has a mobile phone or will have one soon, while just not that many folks (compared on a global scale) have a console or the cash to spend on one, which also needs a television and probably an internet connection/wifi. The economy of scale has limits on consoles that don't really exist on the mobile platforms imho. Mobile games can be freemium (free to get then pay to get add ons). Which is a production model that seems to work well for mobile games smile.gif The same thing of course is happening in consoles too, but it requires the console.

The current thing is PS4 and XBOX trying to release incremental versions of their previous consoles. If you want 4k gaming, you buy the .5 ps4, but then you need a 4k TV as well smile.gif I for one, will not be purchasing a 4k tv or 4k gaming console any time soon. To those who do, God Bless smile.gif

That's awesome Wyverex! I dabble in making games, and love to play them when I get the time. Today I have the day off from work (and the family is out), so after my guitar filled morning, I'm about to sit down to some Far Cry 4. That's very interesting that you're a fulltime game developer. Here is my last game, it took me 3 years (WAY TOO LONG) to make, but it's 100% my work done in my free time. It was definitely too ambitious, I'm going to check out Royal Revolt now.

I didn't know you were a developer? Very cool that you made your own game!!! Congrats!!!! That's a huge feat to accomplish on your own. I'll check it out!

While we are talking about games, I found this indie game very disturbing. I still don't know why I find it as disturbing as i do since it's not really that crazy, maybe it's the juxtaposition of the Sailor Moon gal in the bottom corner against the violence and occult symbology in the game. Quite a contrast.

True but consoles are far from dying out. It's just a separate way of playing that becomes more attractive with better mobile hardware.

That's THE way to market any mobile game at the moment and will be in the near future. We do the same, basically every big player in the market does it. It took some getting used to, coming from pay-once games, but it just works so well on mobile. I don't have the current numbers but at least some years ago the largest percentage of players (>= 90%) weren't paying a single penny for freemium games. But you could comfortably live and grow from the rest because some of them spend an absurd amount of money in those games. Sometimes you are like "why do they do that?" but I won't complain because they pay for my job tongue.gif
One downside is that there is a huge amount of players spamming the forums with complaints about what the game should do, how shitty it is etc. etc. while not having paid anything for it. Players are getting used to take it for granted that games are just there for free and that they have some kind of right to dictate how it should behave. Everyone is welcome to share their opinions but sometimes it's really gross what those people demand.

It's getting harder and harder to make a game on your own these days but apparently you did and that's a great feat! Being too ambitious is pretty normal, that's why most free-time projects fail. But (without having seen the game yet), since you didn't fail I'd say the ambition was just about right smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 13 2016, 10:28 PM

I hear ya! It's heading the same direction as music in a way, where folks sorta expect "free games", then they only start spending once they are "IN GAME" and need some upgrade to a weapon or something smile.gif Such is life eh? Still, it would be tough to listen to all the complaints when the game was free smile.gif

I recently rented TITAL FALL II as mentioned and CALL OF DUTY INFINITE WARFARE. I enjoyed the campaign on both! But I will NOT be keeping/buying either one. Once Titan fall goes down to $5 or something, I"ll pick it up like I did Titan 1. But I"m not paying 50 bux. that's why I rent games these days. So I can play through them and see if I want to buy them when they get cheap. For the price of a few pricey games, I could get a decent used guitar! So I'm a confirmed "renter" on PS4 games.

I did really enjoy the INFINITE WARFARE campgaign in the recent Call of Duty release. Here is a vid direct from my PS4.

Both my Bassbreaker and Helix are mailed off for repairs right now, so I've been taking a bit of a guitar break. The VSTs just aren't as inspiring to play through. So... I finally got to revisit my Steam library and have started playing http://grimrock.net/. It's pretty awesome so far and it's the first game I've tried to use the Steam controller with, working pretty great. I try not to use the mouse too much when gaming because it makes my wrist sore. I also got this indie game, http://gamejolt.com/games/enhanced-elections/122374, last night because the concept was so great it's a really clever game too.

But as if now I've been playing some Pillars of Eternity.

I'm interested in Pillars of Eternity too, it just hasn't dropped to my <$10 price point (that I know of). I usually wait for the Steam sales and get stuff on the cheap. It's so much better coming from the PS3, the content on PC is virtually infinite. I just got Legend of Grimrock II from the https://www.humblebundle.com/nicks-staff-picks-bundle, you might want to check out the current sale, you can get it for as low as $1.00 TIS-100 and Infinifactory are awesome too, I love Zachtronics games though.

I'm a Mac guy so my gaming is done pretty much on the PS4. I usually try to rent the big titles as they come out smile.gif Usually they are just to pricey to buy, but red box let's you rent them for the weekend for 6 bux. This is a good example of cut scene and game play on the start of infinite warfare. The graphics really were amazing and there was emotional connection to the characters for once.

Also it's very easy to take screen grabs on PS4 and xbox, you just hit one button and it uploads it to youtube.

Damn, graphical wise the game looks amazing, but i am easy to impressed biggrin.gif, considering the fact i am still stuck in 2000-2008.

The graphics are amazing on PC or PS4/Xbox1. Here is some standard FPS play in COD infinite warfare. They manage to combine every type of combat you can think of from space battle to dog fight to fps /etc. It's a killer campgaign. Worth at least a rental smile.gif here is another vid fresh from the tap of my PS4. It's the entire ending sequence where our Hero meets his glorious end. Spoilers!

Peace to the fallen.

Gday All,
I was always into PC Open World MilSims. I stopped playing COD after COD II.
Massive fan of Battlefield 2 through to Bf4 but havent played Bf1 yet and probably won't as I just don't have the time anymore.
I was very heavily (understatement) involved with ArmA II -ArmA III core platform and Mods for a long time.

ArmA II DayZ/Epoch:
I played this Mod for god knows how long and just thousands of hours. Myself and a small group of like-minded work mates at the time built a huge community and ran 4 servers in Australia. So much fun but hard work all the same.

ArmA III: When I think about it now I had a serious addiction to this particular game.I helped out (code building/scripting) in many communities with many mods using the A3 Engine. One of my favorite Mods was and still is "The Eridanus-Insurrection" a great multiplayer faction military simulator with some of the best ingame modelling that I have ever seen.

My brother is WAY in to destiny. I played the first one but didn't buy all the extra content. He got the full mega version of destiny 2 and has gotten sucked in to it in a big way. I'm going to try to stay away from it as it get's a bit overwhelming at times and I end up spending way to much time doing something entirely unproductive. Don't get me wrong, I love gaming, but I like to be able to put it down and unless it's "finished" it's hard to put down. I got in to Battle field 1 but refused to get all the expansions for that very reason. I try to rent games from REDBOX which is a kiosk game rental thing we have here in the states. That way I can't play it for more than a weekend as I take it back on monday after getting it friday.

This works much better or me than spending 50 bux on a game, then another 50 for all the season pass/etc. That's 100 bux worth of gear I could have had. So I try to just spend the 10 bux on renting a game for the weekend, get what I can out of it and then return it. I used to use gamefly.com which is a monthly rental thing but it's 30 bux a month and some months there are no games that I want. So I killed it and went to red box.

Not everybody has redbox though, so they have to self police which can be tough on games sometimes. I do plan on renting the new COD and the new BATTLE FRONT among others. A bunch of cool games come out near xmas every year smile.gif

Just be careful not to get sucked to far in!

I'll try not to. I've been sucked by MMORPGs in the past, they are my nemesis laugh.gif

It's all about balance smile.gif With Video Games I have had real struggles keeping balance with everything else. I got really in to the last METAL GEAR SOLID 5 and almost lost myself in the game. My base got just HUGE and became nearly hell bent on making it even more huge. I even built some nukes until they were stolen smile.gif I realized I'd finally just gone to far when I went through the entire campaign AGAIN on "Extreme Difficulty" and just stopped playing it.
Here is a capture from one of the missions set on "extreme"

Just a mesmerizing game IMHO. Kojima is a master of game narrative imho.

These days, I try to limit my play time to a couple hours a week on weekends only. Otherwise, I just get sucked in and find that I'm not practicing as much as I should and not writing/recording, at all. Just be careful smile.gif

WOLFENSTEIN: Youingblood
This game is getting a lot of mixed reviews. Some people truly hate the game. It's got issues to be sure, such as the fact that there are no checkpoints! If you get killed in the middle of a hard level, you start ENTIRELY OVER and you don't get your ammunition restored. So you can start a very hard level, with zero ammunition. This does get to be a pain. Some people like the challenge of scrounging for resources. Some games are based on that very idea. I'd like checkpoints and more ammo! That said, it's non stop action and fun. Well worth a rental or a borrow, but NOT worth the retail price to buy imho. Have you guys played it?

ANTHEM : PS4This game is getting a LOT of bad reviews. It's got issues to be sure. However, it's a FUN game for a weekend of action and it's got some of the best graphics I've seen. It's like being inside of a great sci fi movie. Well worth a rental or borrow. I've seen it as low as $15 to buy and at that price, it's worth getting. Anyone else played this?

I heard the developers already treat Anthem as a dead game but I haven't played personally to give my opinion. Same goes for Wolfenstein but it seems a bit more promising. I like having limited ammo in FPS games myself and this made Conflict: Global Storm the best shooter I've played. I also heard Destiny 2 will be moving to Steam which should increase the player base by a bit. Regarding MGS, I can only play what is available for PC which makes me sad because I remember playing one of these on old PSX as a kid. But I agree that Kojima is a genius wink.gif

Yeah, Anthem is a "Dead game" which is why it's only $15 to buy. It's worth it at that price. Just to fliy around the world (you character can fly) and explore. It's huge and and very relaxing to just roam around. But yeah, it's a dead end for developers.

Lots of HATE for the new wolfenstein as well by reviewers. Again, worth a weekend rental, not worth paying $50 and not worth owning. But that's most of my games, weekend rental just to play through it and have some fun.

I LOVED that last Metal Gear Soliid game, but that too got a LOT of hate from people. I liked it so much I actually bought it! I built up my huge military base and everything. IT's still there but I don't play the game anymore. I played every inch of it though smile.gif

Its sad that no other country on earth seems to have video game rentals? From what I hear we are the only ones? Every else has to pay up to $100 per game!! That's assuming they can even get a copy of the game which sometimes they cant. Here, a service like gamelfy.com will send you any game you want to try for as long as you like for about $15 a month. Way cheaper than blowing wads of money on games. I hate spending gear money on games!!

Me too! I'll probably watch my friend Youtuber's let's play first to see him struggle on a blind play while I gather funds to upgrade my PC.

As a person who spent countless weeks playing this pearl, I can't express how happy I am to see it happen!

I thought it would only release for Playstation and not PC. Well, initially at least.

The YouTuber will play it on PS and I skipped the speech part, so I didn't hear if they mentioned a PC premiere. That much I would understand with my Japanese. They can and they will delay the PC premiere a bit, as always with console games but by the time they release on PC I might have the rig to run it.

Glad to hear you will at least get to play it smile.gif I just hope my PS4 holds on till then. It seems to have been slowing down in the menus etc.

Same here on the PS4. I finally added a small 1TB USB3 drive to my PS4 and it really helped speed things up. I think the main drive was getting too full. It was a really easy installl. Just plug in the usb cable and menu pops up to format the drive. It's a small drive so it's bus powered. Very handy.

Do you have a link for it? smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Sep 20 2019, 01:56 AM

Sure! Best part is that it's only $50. It loads every game twice as fast as my internal drive. Bus powered so just put it in to a usb port and bam ready to go.

Here is a pic for size comparison. It's very small.

Crazy fast, crazy small, crazy cheap. I think I'm gonna get a few more of them. They work great for project drives and backup drives as well.

CONTROL (PS4/STEAM/XBOX)

One of the best games I've ever played. It's somewhat rare these days to see a well thought out single player game with a strong narrative and amazing level design with great game mechanics and inspiring game play. This games does it. It's nothing less than amazing.
Here is a preview clip.

Here is my beating the final level (without the shield ability) which was seriously tough but enormously fun. Took me a few tries.

STAR WARS:
JEDI FALLEN ORDER

I'm currently playing JEDI FALLEN ORDER and I gotta say it's the best game I've played this year. If you like Star Wars and Star Wars games, this is the game for you. I got it for $20 which is crazy cheap. I've just gotten started and I already dig it big time. Anyone else tried this game?

Best game of 2019 IMHO. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. Graphics are amazing, great fight system, very challenging game Loved it. Here is one of my fave sections where you car jack a bit AT-AT (from Empire Strikes Back) and blow up lots of stuff smile.gif

screen grab inside AT-AT

+1 We had to get an external drive so that we could install a new game without having to delete other games to clear space. It works well except now it seems that while getting a game update, I can't put the PS4 into sleep/power save mode anymore because it stops the update when I do. A minor inconvenience.

Same here! This game is sorta huge and I had put a 1 terabyte external usb 3 drive on the PS4 recently to handle overload of the primary drive. That stock drive in there is just to small by todays standards. The game ran great off of the external though! And it's the size of a deck of cards and bus powered!
