Wow Canis that's a great comment - I have worked very hard to improve my recordings. I realised that my recording chops were very week compared to others here. I'd love to share what I learned during the last year recording-wise (al though I still have A LOT to learn). Is there anything special you are wondering about, regarding the sound?

Hehe, you do indeed deserve the "Skill Talent" mark tongue.gif

Well, I have pretty much no skill whatsoever when it comes to proper recording. I just plug from my guitar to my amp, and from my amp to my line in, which results in a pretty boring, tame and dry tone. I guess part of it is my guitar which isn't exactly up to industry standard, but I was wondering how your studio "wiring*" goes?

*Don't know the actual industry-word for it, but I mean the "guitar -> amp -> line in" talk tongue.gif

You can get great result even with cheap guitars! My chain looks like this

guitar > amp > "red box" through speaker out on the amp > into computer sound card
however this setup would give just as good results:
guitar > pod > into computer sound card

Some additional things to help you fatten the sound:

* record at least two identical takes of a riff - and "hard pan" them left and right
* I also overdub with a synthesizer ("square lead", a pretty common synthesizer sound), you can do the same with strings or whatever synth sound you have. Mix the synthesizer so low that people don't really understand that it's a synthesizer that makes it so fat.

Other small tweaks which are important but don't really make it sound super-fat - it just makes it work better in the mix etc

* apply "low cut" on the guitars below 100-200 khz
* "scoop out" some middle frequencies, experiment and see what works with your sound
* add slight compression
* make the same eq adjustments to your synth over-dubs and your guitars.
* apply slight chorus effect
* multiband compressor - compress the lower frequencies of the guitar sound

The most important thing is probably to tweak your guitar sound correctly before you record it. I would advise you try to get a cool riffing sound - which sounds good on it's own. Then roll off the bass and drive (having too much of these will make it sound bad when you add multiple over-dubs). Also make sure there is a little mid range (some people choose to completely scoop the mid range away which make the sound hard to work with).

That's all I can think of for now...!

Did you use emulation software or a real amp?

Real amp! A peavey triple X amp through a Hughes & Ketner "Red Box" (it's a speaker simulator so that you easily can plug your amp to the computer without using a mic - it sounds awesome!).
