GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Best Action Movie ?

Posted by: Ben Higgins Oct 14 2011, 10:09 AM

What is the best action thriller movie of all time in your opinion ?

For me, it will always be The Bourne Identity. Other films I really dig of this type are Luc Besson style films - Transporter series, Hitman, Taken. I really like films that are set in Europe because they seem grittier and easier to identify with, opposed to Hollywood movies.

The new one! biggrin.gif That Momoa dude is a killer on the loose laugh.gif I like his role as Khal Drogo in the Game of Thrones!

Matrix, (the original, not the sequels). Yes I know, it's more sci-fi than pure action but no action movie left such an impact on me.

I don't like today's action flicks much, it's usually just brainless entertainment (for example I was so hyped about The Expendables and was left VERY disappointed), but action movie with a cool story - that's what I like to see.

FaceOff was a great JOHN WOO action pic wink.gif Felt like his I really his early work from Hong Kong Action Cinema (Woo helped define the Hong Kong Action genre). Before he became Holly Woo instead of John Woo. But I still dig his new stuff, though not as much.

John Woo and the triad films
See also: Heroic bloodshed, Gun fu, and Girls with guns
As a producer, Tsui Hark facilitated the creation of John Woo's epoch-making heroic bloodshed movie A Better Tomorrow (1986). Woo's saga of cops and the triads (Chinese gangsters) combined fancifully choreographed (and extremely violent) gunplay with heightened emotional melodrama, sometimes resembling a modern-dress version of 1970s kung fu films by Woo's mentor Chang Cheh. The formula broke another all-time box office record. It also jump-started the faltering career of co-star Chow Yun-fat, who overnight became one of the colony's most popular idols and Woo's favorite leading man.[3]
For the remainder of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, a deluge of films by Woo and others explored similar territory, often with a similar visual style and thematic bent. They were usually marked by an emphasis on the fraternal bonds of duty and affection among the criminal protagonists. The most notable other auteur of these themes was Ringo Lam, who offered a less romanticized take in such films as City on Fire, Prison on Fire (both 1987), and Full Contact (1992), all starring Chow Yun-Fat. The genre and its creators were accused in some quarters of cravenly glorifying real-life triads, whose involvement in the film business was notorious.[15]

Speaking of car chases: Should we consider the original Blues Brother's movie an action movie? Cause this movie totally rocks!

Bourne identity is cool movie, the first one, the only film where Mat Damon played a good role IMO, his other roles are very weak.

Not sure about other movies, the latest I watched and I liked is "The next 3 days" with Russell Crowe. Great ending, adrenaline stuff.

I was aware of the books and that the recent films are quite different but didn't know about an older film. Thanks, I will check it out ! smile.gif

Has anybody seen the film Unknown, starring Liam Neeson ? It looks really good, kind of like Taken.. I really want to see it. biggrin.gif

There's also a film called Hanna, which people have described as a Bourne type film but weirder. It got mixed reviews. Anyobody seen that ?

Posted by: Fran Oct 16 2011, 11:53 AM

I watched Hanna the other day, it was good enough to watch but no biggie, at least for my taste.

Oh by the way, Payback is an awesome action movie if you haven't seen it.

Edit: Talking about more recent stuff, I really liked Wanted and Salt. Ok, maybe sweet Angelina has something to do with it, but still, I really had a blast watching both movies. I must have watched Wanted like four times laugh.gif

'Unknown' looks very promising, don't think he'll dissapoint....If you've seen Liam Neeson in Taken
i wouldn't hesitate wink.gif
