Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Neoclassical Etude #1 by Marcus Lavendell

Taking a break from Bens vibrato odyssey 5 since my fingertips are getting pretty worn out :D Im really struggling with this one, so I would love to hear as much constructive feedback as possible.

Hey matey!

Happy New Year and glad to see you in the REC zone again smile.gif

This piece ain't an easy one and I think you are on the right path with it - but since we're at it, I'd like to share some thoughts based on what I've noticed - you are somewhere between 95-99% close to nailing this one, but it's clearly still not comfortable for you. In my opinion, you should slow things down and focus on slowly rehearsing the lesson with the slowed down backings while taking care of:

- being in perfect synch with the backing - some licks are a bit blurry because of the speed - see min 0:12 for instance
- your right hand looks a little stiff and your picking occurs from the elbow, a bit smile.gif In the same passage, for instance, around 0:12 it is visible.
I think that slowing down and focusing on picking as relaxed as possible and using your wrist, is something that will definitely make things better - I do remember that you mentioned your picking technique in your introductory post, right? smile.gif
- the vibrato around 0:08 could be a bit wider

I think that if you try these things, you will not only have a better take but also, you will take a step on the path to developing a healthy right hand technique.

All the best and keep rocking!

Cosmin

Hi man, this is pretty good. I mentioned in a previous REC that you were using economy picking and I can see you using it here. If it's a conscious part of your style then that's totally cool, ignore what I said in the previous REC comments. If you can use economy picking and make it work for you then do it smile.gif

I'm pretty sure Marcus uses it anyway, just like one of his biggest influences, Yngwie.

The only things that that stand out as needing immediate improvement are some co-ordination issues and fretting hand issues.

-The E string licks around 0:12-0:13 have a couple of wrong notes, which are just caused by your finger hitting the wrong fret accidentally. That happens a lot with these types of licks that jump around the string.

-Watch out for the timing on this lick around 0:24. It's easy to go in front of the beat, especially when using economy picking

-Try to clean up the triad arpeggios around 0:26 and beyond. They get better as they go on but they can be very difficult to get clean.

All in all, a very good performance !

Hey Kaaba!

Aloone the fact that You are able to challenge that lesson is a huge plus for You smile.gif

Unfortunately Your both hand seems to be a bit out of sync - just a little bit still visible when sometimes one is a bit before the beat while other still not on the right note. I found not more than 2-3 spots where You hit wrong notes but it was easy to miss in that "tornado" of notes smile.gif

I think You could spent more time maybe not even on straight practice but on some research for right hand angles and motion. I think that's where the problem is. You do some good job muting low strings with Your right palm (anle of the wrist) but at some points thing could be asier to play precisely if You find just a slight mod in Your hand position - like a bit wider movements in that -mid-speed tempo.
You can also try to relax the hand on all other notes than the very first once on each string, while string skipping. Sometimes it helps smile.gif

Hi Kaaba! I can see that you've already received great feedback here.

I have nothing else to add regarding the things to fix, but I would like to say that your energy and tone on this take are so great! Work slowly based on the comments that the other instructors have already shared and keep on rocking! wink.gif

Cheers,

Gab.-
