GMC Forum _ THEORY _ What Time Signature Is My Riff?

Posted by: thefireball Oct 1 2010, 04:11 AM

I recorded a quick sample with my computer mic. Can any of you help? Maybe offer some advice on these odd time signatures? It's really hard to count it out. I know it's got some time signature because I'm consistent. I was just playing around with riffing and came up with this. I can only count and play 4/4 time I think. unsure.gif

Sounds like 5/4 timing. You have the opposite problem of what I have, I always come up with stuff thats odd timing... 6/4 and 5/4 usually smile.gif If you have Guitar Pro you can transcribe it, that will help you with figuring out the timing.

Well, I do have Powertab Editor smile.gif close.

Thanks man. I wanna broaden my horizon beyond 4/4. I just need to get the feel of these odd-time sigs. I gotta do some serious thinking on this one anyway.... smile.gif

I'm trying to count it... urg...even if it's 5/4 time...i can't count it well sad.gif

down with you 4/4! laugh.gif

You should check out Soundgarden if you like odd time signatures, alot of their stuff is in odd timing. The song "Outshined" is a good example.

or listen to still hurts by marco sfogli.. smile.gif It has all the 5/4, 7/4, 4/4 wink.gif

sounds like 7/4 to me.. count till 7 and it repeats..

Nice riff !! happy.gif

cool! You guys are awesome! And thanks! I'm gonna use it in a future song!

Yep, that's definitely 7/4 time!! smile.gif cool!!! I just have to learn to count at a constant bpm and notice when it starts over! Well, that is if it is the quarter note that gets the beat - which in this case is so! happy.gif

Well, it is odd timing for sure, 7/4 probably!

But.... what if the riff did'nt start over? And just went into something else? Would you just count on or... How do you know when to stop counting?

Posted by: maharzan Oct 4 2010, 08:17 AM

You will have to count and figure it out.. I am not sure if theres any other method but if its not 7/4 you can't count and it screws up or just go through the flow of the song if you don't like counting.. (I don't too).. listen to Still Hurts by Marco Sfogli, he has all sorts of timings in that song so a song can be made up of various timing mixes. smile.gif

well.. the music seems to flow but when I saw the tabs, I was like.. what where did all those timings come from? smile.gif I have yet to count though.. wink.gif

How to count time signatures smile.gif

wow this is gonna be harder than i thought

Posted by: BedroomBozo Oct 5 2010, 05:29 AM

I was thinking more like 7/8 time..... but that could very well be wrong... sounds like 7 eighth notes to me, not quarters.

hehehe, yes, of course. It is smile.gif

It sounds 7/4 dude!
But it depends on the drummer wink.gif

Posted by: Opetholic Jul 24 2012, 10:03 PM

To me it sounds like
one 7/8 bar followed by a 8/8 bar and again 7/8 followed by 8/8.

PS: Sorry for posting on something too old tongue.gif But I think I counted differently than everyone else. So what was the final answer ??
