GMC Forum _ Uploads _ Orange Jam

Posted by: wrk Jul 8 2009, 08:43 PM

I wanted to share with you a take i did on "Orange Jam". The beginning is obviously inspired by Jack Thammarat's take, but i tried to develop my own melodic ideas after the first 20 sec.

The backing is available for free at rotosound and bluesjamtracks if someone want to give it a try. I think it's a really nice backing ..

Hope you like it smile.gif

Very Nice Andy! Great control over your phrasing and the tone fits nicely. smile.gif I'm surprised that you used the Ibanez over that backing and not your strat.. tongue.gif

Yeah, the strat is down atm .. since a while i need to change frets. Now it becomes really difficult to play it. The frets have sharp corners everywhere and with all these slides it's hard to reach the right notes ... smile.gif

But i like the Ibanez, nearly feels like a strat, at least as comfortable ... laugh.gif

Hey Andy this was another really nice take you uploaded. Everything sounds nice! tongue.gif wink.gif
I listened to it several time and also Jacks new upload which I didn’t know about until this. Thanks, I’m a Jack fan also. biggrin.gif

You have always given me honest and very helpful comments to think about when I uploaded things that have helped me, so I noticed a few small things that I wanted to share with you. Hope you don't mind or take offence. smile.gif

Everything was nice but the sweet spot for me started at 0:28 where you switched your pickups. That tone was just beautiful and worked great till 0:56 and you adjusted your volume knob. Everything at that point was still great until you hit the bend at 1:07. In my opinion the volume knob should have been turned back up to give you that sweeter, more out in front tone you had previously. Licks and chop where still great after that but I thought I heard some string noise here and there, probably because you were trying to pick notes harder to increase the volume.

This was just awesome and I hope you will find something I commented on helpful. smile.gif

Thank you Jeff for taking such a deep look into this take. No offense at all smile.gif .. it's really helpful to get your opinion, especially as i try now to work more on my own solos.

Actually what i did at 1:07 is to kick in a tube screamer on my pod live to add a bit more gain. I kind of liked the more singing sound at this point, but in the battle i simply forgot to switch to the bridge pickup on the bend at 1:14. A bit more attack would have worked better from there on.

Yeah, there is some string noise, worst at 1:13, maybe i should avoid the extra gain after all (?). The faster part at the end turns out differently ever time. Will not say it's improvised, but i'm not aware of every singe note and it easily get sloppy then.

You should check out some of Jack's tunes in detail .. i think they will be interesting for you and your style. The reason i play some of his songs is, that he uses some nice licks which i can easily reuse. Compared to Guthrie's take for example, .. it's amazingly awesome, but i have no idea what he is doing there .. laugh.gif

Amazing as always

Amazing take! I really like your tone after 28 seconds, I love your phrasing, and your vibrato have a lot of feel to it!

One particular part I enjoyed was the tapping part about 1:30 into the song. It was really well done and it sounded.. "Uninterupted", if that makes any sense tongue.gif It just melded into the song without getting any attention with a small break that could signify that you were moving your right hand from your pickguard to your frets ^^

It was probably not that big a deal though, it's just that I've been extremely cautious on just that with my own playing lately tongue.gif

Great take Andy !
I haven't heard Jack play over this type of backing but it definitely suits your style. I can just recommend more spacing in solos in terms of rhythm balance and motive development.
Great job man smile.gif

Andy could you send me backing track for that jam via PM or email please/

Yeah, i know exactly what you mean. It's not easy to switch from tapping to picking back and forth .. i'm cautious about this as well and impressed how people do this ohmy.gif . Here it is a bit easier as it's more like tapped trill or something like that, not 100% in time, but the switch went well .. laugh.gif

To add a few more interesting rhythms would be nice, i noticed a lot of licks are a bit repetitive in terms of rhythm, did you mean this?

Sure, i can send you the backing. I'm not at my computer atm, but i can send it tonight or you can download it http://www.rotosound.com/downloads.html as well, incl. Guthrie tabs and video. It's free.
