Hello good sir! Cosmin man, again thank you for affording me the opportunity to have personal interaction, real feedback, and ability to grow my playing -and- creative skills with your influence. I like so many types of music, anything from tribal grunting chants, to Mozart, to the Police, I guess what matters to me is how the melody makes me feel, if my brain likes it, its good music....LOL! Anyway, you have a very appealing quality in your musical expression; both in your style of play, and in the melodies that flow from your creative focus. Your ability to combine those qualities gives your music -synergy- my friend!:D Most hard working musicians have an element of talent, but few have synergy. I'm not saying this just to make you feel good, I say this because it is true, and I want to have a synergy in my playing some day, and having an instructor that blasts out synergy in drop D like a beast, is such a blessing!!
My gear as of right now (I'm broke from school) is an Ibanez Gio, Les Paul shaped guitar, I love it Stage 6 13 watt amp, big Crate 2 speaker amp that sounds pretty mean, and I recently bought a Korg ToneWorks AX30B...lol, which is for a bass, I'm such a dork haha! Other than that I have a few guitar cords, a tuner, string winder, and 2 Dimebag Darrel Riffer Madness books.
I used to play some, never advanced far, but I played enough that by nature I can play decent rhythm guitar, and pick. However, I just came on fire a few weeks ago, and man I want to play for real, play better, and play what I want. My motivation believe it or not is inward. I don't have any desire to be famous, or legendary, for that matter even be in a band...I want to play because the way it makes me feel man Is that a good motivation, what do you think? To be great you need to have bigger dreams?
I very much want to improve my technical skills Cosmin, my knowledge of music and guitar etc...I don't want to just focus on becoming a fantastic technical player, but I want those skills Fro example: I know 6 chords: a, g, e, f, d, c,a-minor. I can play bar chords all the way up the fret board, and lots of power chords. I just do not know what they are... ...my muscle memory is somewhat developed, lol I can play level 4 riffs, but what key is it in, I do not know lol
Ok my friend, next week I will be able to get some of the gear I need to make a video. If you would like man, let me know what things I should include, so you can get a good idea of where I am at. Much is improvement needed lol
Ah man, Metal Metrics 5, I've been working it the past couple days and almost have it smoothed out. Gah, I love the part where the rythm slows down, and becomes the pure essence of what hard core is! lol
Once again, thanks man, ttys! Please Let me know any info you would like from me, or any questions you would like to ask, so you can get me going in the right direction
Btw, I enjoyed the video session man

Hola again Cosmin! I'm struggling pretty hard with the 7 6 5 4 3 2... transition in MM5. I'm not sure if it is simply that I'm just not fast enough, or my technique is hindering me... lol. It's hart to tell me much without a video, but any thing you can think of in the meanwhile, tips, pointers, or ideas would be much appreciated good sir! I've been running it as an exercise over and over to try and pick up speed...I think I'm close, but its tuff on me haha

Hey Tucker just got in front of the PC. That part is a bit difficult indeed the idea is that there are 4 16th notes followed by triplets. You have to take it slowly and clean - give yourself some time to develop it at speed and then implement it in the context.
Let me know how it works - just take care to make it sound as 'machine gun' like as possible, in sync with the drums!

Perfect! Thank you sir, I will build up to it. I think I am trying to force it as fast as I can. I'll slow it back down to square one, then correctly build my speed. I've got to get it down, any transition in a song that must sound as close to a "machine Gun" as possible, gets me freakin' excited haha! Awesome man, gracias!
Btw, my right arm hurts so bad man...ugh. >_<! <---That sounds kinda bad, lol! But I don't no any other way to say my arm is going to fall off at the elbow from not having anymore strength left to hold it in place haha!

Have you forced yourself while playing? Regarding elbow and arm strain, I highly recommend this little vid by Guthrie take the time to listen and apply the stuff he advises here, k?
Now, I want to thank you for your kind words you have no idea how good it makes me feel, knowing that I can be a source of inspriation for people Tell me mate, how much time can you practice each day?

I think I force quite a bit when I'm playing, but lately I've trying to ease off a little and work slow, more patience. I've put my goal at 1 hour a day, guitar in hand practicing. Sometimes I only get 15 or 20 minutes, but other times I'm able to hit it for 2 or 3 hours. How does that sound? I'll take any advice on a structured practice routine...
Well, after Guthrie's video, I see I've been practicing some bad habits. I've been using the thinnest pick I can find (I thought it would be easier), my picks are rounded, so I have now used scissors and made them all have a point and I need to not leave so much pick sticking out. Haha, very good video sir! I think I've got a comfy method that is correct now as far as arm movement! Lol, I'm ready to do some work and form some good habits now
Thank you much Cosmin for the direction sir I'll get a vid camera soon! haha

yessir, I cannot wait to get a video up to get your feedback!! well, I'm not looking forward to putting my lack of skills on display, haha but I think the best thing for my progress right now would be a straight up critique by yourself, it would be invaluable, especially since I want to emulate your style to such a hi degree. Next week I should get my scholarship $$, with which I'm going to get setup with a decent camera, so video will be soon, sir!
Cosmin, when playing, should I try in use hammer ons and pull offs as much as possible, or approach everything as to pick as many notes as possible?

Wow dude you got a scholarship! It means you are studying hard man! COngratulations
About alternate picking and HO/ PO - everything has to have a balance mate, use them when you feel like it these two techniques have different effects and sounds so they should be used where they are called upon in a context
Let's see the videooooo

Wow! Hey man looking forward to seeing the takes - don't be nervous, it's only you in there a few tips:
- relax! Without being relaxed, you won't be able to give it your best - you are NOT in a competition - take time to record as MANY TAKES AS NEEDED, until YOU are satisfied - post them here and we'll discuss them so that you may get a BIG 10 in the REC zone if you choose to post them there as well
best of luck Tucker!!

Cosmin good sir, I have my new camera, its just a little handheld on by Nikon that takes high def video, and my amps, guitar, some various cables, etc. Do you have any advice on how to record my video so the sound is ok? I tried it with just setting the camera on a shelf and hitting record, but the sound is very bad. I'll keep seeing if I can get better sound, but if you have any advice, I am all ears I have a web cam mic also...

Hey Tucker congrats on your new acquisitions mate, I suggest the following:
- record the video with the cam - record audio in the same time in a DAW software - there's this nifty movie here teaching you how to do it
blend the two of them in a movie editing software, Vegas maybe? and there ya go - hiQ vid and audio
what do you say? now until you get the hang of things, you can also post the videos with the camera sound here in this thread, let me witness a sample of your recording just as it is now, k?

Hey Cosmin, I followed your link, and got all the software, I'm making a video this moment! Lol, I have to admit, this process is so fun man, I can't wait to post my first video right here! Ok sir, after you watch me play, I can put in two to four houra a day practicing, with the minimum being two hours, and probably the mode closer to 3 or 3 1/2 hours per session. I'll go in any direction you point and follow the system. I'm learning chords and scales steadily on the side, and have charts I am learning. I am not to focused on creativity right now, I am highly focused on technique and form. As an adult, I am still afraid of the dark, because of goat legged faceless creatures I am just positive exist, so I have an imagination lol I'll have fun with creativity later. After you see me, whatever you say...

I'm posting them here in a bit, right after I close down the Accouting Lab, and take one more shot at the machine gun in MM4! But like , I really am sir HAHA! I have a mic and no more excuses to delay my first video up on GMC!!!! I am putting 3 tracks in each video, and the videos are straight through so you can see all my mess ups, my whole process... I am so embarrassed about everyone (at least that clicks in) seeing me play. Man Cosmin, am I on the right track in thinking that watching me play, uncut and with all my mistakes a great way for you to see my weaknesses, and what needs the most focus?
Haha, man for some reason as I read your "nice RIG man" comment, my sense of well being elevated into bliss for a while. LOL

Duuuude welcome back! Man, you've got an awesome balance when you are playing! The things which you have to work on is the attack in your right hand for this sort of riffing, you are a bit too soft you need to be more aggressive but keeping the tightness. The single note riffs towards the end were a bit unsure, but with a little more practice and keeping in mind what I told you above, you can rip this lesson apart
Congratulations my friend! I like your playing - so, the Pillar style lesson? I can move on to the details with ya, that's great!

Pillar Style? Oh, Sir you mean the single best union of melodic permutations ever conceived of, and transcribed from mind to material experience with all existential riff perfection in uniform translation to a tab sheet? LOL, I am on my 28th take or so, it will be posted shortly! Along with some MM4 and 5 if possible. I want you to see as much as possible man. Just the instruction in you reply to the video is worth the 6 month membership fee. Thanks man
I definitely see what you are saying. When I watch the video, my attack looks really weak ( when I observe objectively). It seems maybe by increasing my confidence, my attack will get stronger? I will work on that, awesome.
P.S. Cosmin, man i am so glad to be back in the program I am having a hard time dialing in the tone I think Pillar Style is worthy of, so I'm using the best sound I can do Ok, back to video...

I will have around 3 hours a night, and sometimes as much as 4 to 5 hours I would like to commit to! I am very pensive about my speed and attack man. I do not even know a good finger exercise that will build endurance, muscle memory, and speed. An exercise like this it seems is must have in the practice arsenal for students, haha I have several tabs from some of the other instructor's lessons, but I don't know where to start bro Anyway, I await your lesson plan sir!!
-Tucker
P.S. LOL, I added a goofy riff on the end of Metal Metrics 5, I think I might be OCD (Obsessive Compulsive), or something, but its like I have to put it on there!! Haha! Don't laugh too much man.

I had to post those vids on youtube and imbed them, I can't seem to upload anything...Haha, I blocked comments though, people can get really nasty, real often, kind of sad LOL
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 14 2012, 01:17 PM
Hey Tuck! Great to see you back man
Dude, let's take things one at a time:
1) The vids are ok, by this meaning that I can see and understand what you are playing 2) The first thing I would suggest to focus on, is timing and for this, we should try and work on the lesson parts separately, starting at half the tempo. This style of playing requires maximum tightness and impecable timing so this is what you need to build up mate
Regarding the schedule I will make a post today for all my mentoring army, which will be directed towards this idea and you will ALL benefit from it, k?
Cosmin
Posted by: TuckerG May 15 2012, 01:18 AM
Awesome, I will be looking for the post. Man, i'd really like to get my timing down tight.
I was just reading several comments in Dinaga's thread about the insane lessons, and breaking down a lesson in to sections at slower speeds seems to be the way its done! This sounds great sir, tell me what lesson and section to get to work on, and I'll get to work!

Alright Tuck let's start with the Metal Metrics 5 lesson - almost forgot to tell you - congrats on nailing the 16th notes and triplet little phrase that one is very tricky at higher speeds
So, isolate the first part, take it to 50% and play it with the metronome, bringing it up to speed. Focus on timing and perfect execution Then, do the same with every other part.
I noticed that you had trouble with part 4 (the verse part finishing with the octaves) that one should be treated with care
Let's see a recording at 75% speed and let me know if there's anything more you'd like to know
all the best

Cosmin, I am having some trouble with the BPM, the tab says its 105, but on my metronome and drum machine thing, 105 is way slower than the lesson. I've just been practicing at much lower speeds, which I am now playing the lesson RIGHT btw like really, but I don't know how to dial in 75% of 100% of the regular lesson speed on my gnx4, because 75% of speed seems more like 10%, lol! I use the lesson track at 75, but I don't know how to record me with that for you to see, good sir
Anyway, just seems the bpm aren't translating for me, or i am noob, probably the latter haha I also want to get it right for my journal entries...
If i am confusing you, just say bust! And I'll post up a recording of me playing MM5 at a slower speed, rightly, and with better timing, somewhere around the 75 of speed mark lol, im a dork
-Tucker
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 17 2012, 07:22 AM
Hey Tuck hmmm 105 BPM should be 105 BPM on any device, now, in order to calculate 75% out of 105, we have the following formula:
(75/100) x 105 = 0.75 x 105 = 78, 75 which we shall round up at 80 BPM
Use any metronome on the internet (search 'online metronome' on Google) and set it at 80 BPM, playing quarter notes, ok?
Record yourself having the metronome playing and there you go you can record in the same fashion using the provided backing tracks
let me know if it works

Cosmin, good sir do not disown me , please haha!! lol, the bpm on MM% is 105? Man, I think it may be that there are more notes per beat? I am going to do some research on notes real fast, i think that may be my issue. I was an applied physics major before I switched to Acc/Econ, so I can convert pretty much any quantifiable integers with counting properties using a standard set of differential equations, however this is because its interesting, not because I'm smart!! LMAO So, I am stuck on this, which i think I need to study some music theory bro, having you as a mentor and the opportunity to learn how to play right is worth the study . Also, I was doing the main riff wrong, that is corrected now. I bought GuitarPro so this will help much! Anyway, Posting video tonight of MM5 sir!...and my excel goal chart for you to see.

Sir Maestro! Here is MM5 @ appx 75% of speed. Man, this riff is fantastic when played right, it is not a simple riff I have found. It sounds great, but the sequence is not what it seems, as I was playing it while leaving many intricacies out man. Great riff Cosmin, for real! I am ready to work up full speed, after I get your feedback and direction good sir

Alrightie man! This sounds good! Clean and accurate! Good work! the only details you should focus on, would be the 16th note and triplet lick - you played 8 sixteenth notes instead of 4 sixteenth notes and 3 triplets. Its 1 2 3 4 1 2 3
Focus on this little issue and then raise the speed. Oh and don't gallop before playing the octaves at the end of each verse part keep them straight- as I played them in the lesson. It's not wrong, but if you wanna take it to the REC section, you will lose points
Keep it up Tuck! Good work!!

Hola good Maestro! I sir, have been in the Dominican Republic for the past few weeks with my in laws. However, I am back now and with my guitar!!!! Haha! Hope you didn't think I put down my axe for good. I'm back home in my groove ring sir, time to continue...
Ok, I am going to pick right back up where we left off if that is ok man? I'll video Metal Metrics 5 the right way on video, then record a second take just straight audio, and pan the two takes in opposite directions? I understand that to be the technique y'all were talking about...
Anyway, I'm happy to be back once again bro, let's get me learned on guitar, lol.
-Tucker
P.S. BTW, awesome new lesson my good mentor!
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 9 2012, 02:27 PM
Welcome back Tuck! Thank you very much!
Well, I think it would be better if you would record two audio shots and pan them, while shooting the video shots as well the realism will be WAY BETTER
Mix one video shot with the panned audio shots and that should do the trick
let me know if you need anything else ok ?

Hello my friend!! The internet company wants me to pay them last months bill before they let me back on at my house, LOL!! My internet is currently not operational until I get my school money next week, or my dad steps up and forks up some of the money I earned last week castrating a bunch of goats and stapling tags to their ears, which ever comes first! However, I have been practicing like crazy, you would be proud of me Sir!! my video is made and ready, and I so so ready for the next step! LOL, Ive been playing the same stuff for 2 weeks . Anyway, I will be back online within a few days Cos, the trip to the Dom Rep just took all the money I had The video is pretty good, I spent lots of time on it, haha!

Haha! Gosh, it is a place of beauty...for the -rich- Americans at the resorts, but for this broke gringo its street side grills, no air conditioner, and 12 ppl to a cab... I sir, am going to post up a couple videos using the internet at my school, I think it will let me do that. I am so ready for your next set of instructions and a new lesson, I can wait no longer HAHA I'll be able to afford me some internet when the bulk of my financial aid rolls in around the middle of August. I'd like to try and squeeze in a few lessons before then, even though I can't communicate daily. Also , I actually wrote my on song/riff for your viewing pleasure, Maestro. You will be proud, entertained, or hate music forever after you hear it lol. TTYS Cos.

Cos Good Sir, I am putting in 2 to 3 hours a night! I just need internet soooo badly for my mentorship man, for real. I get financial aid for fall semester any day, I cannot wait... Anyway, I am at the university right now putting the finishing touches on the poster. They delayed the tournament until three weeks from now, so I have to get the flyers and posters out!! Oh man, it will have Aria, your youtube page, and facebook page plastered all over it, I even put a link for GMC
Cos, I had an opportunity to buy an Ibanez RG470 guitar for 200 bucks, and I freakin love it!! Is it similar to your Ibanez sir? Best guitar I have played yet!
I'll get back to you this weekend man, I have to for the tourney deadline!!

Cos, Good Sir, I have consistently found it more comfortable, smoother sounding, and have more control when I play with my finger instead of a pick. Is this a bad habit to get into, or simply a different yet equal style preference?

Howdy Tuck! Looking forward to seeing that poster man! About the playing with the fingers, that's a different approach to playing - if you like it, we can most surely discuss about it, but riffing will not be included, as for that you need the pick

perfect, all I needed to hear man! Finger picking is no longer on my radar. ASU decided to not open the computer lab today, so postings tomorrow good sir! but, it was nice in that I had no choice but to practice all day haha! Thanks for the input, man. hasta manana Maestro!

Well, it's not like you have to avoid it I love finger picking, as it provides a great way to be expressive when playing smooth lead lines for instance. It's just that it's different and it is good to be used in a different context.
We can tackle both directions, you know

Awseome Cos, at some point I would like to mass around with fingerstyle a little. Ok, Man I just put down a deposit on an Ibanez RGD320... It sounds brutal good sir! It is set up for D standard tuning, which is what my guitar is in 90% of the time (thanks to the style my mentor happens to play) LOL kidding man But I love it! I cannot wait to start practicing with it Cosmin! It was made for shredding and the style of music I am learning, gah I am so excited haha Any thoughts on if this is a good guitar for me sir?
-Tucker
P.S. ASU is shut down for the week (week before fall semester) so I am locked out of the MCS building which is my only access to computer, and all our tournament project stuff. So tournament is dalayed a week, which is good in a way... soon as i get in there, I'll get your ok on the poster and start printing copies lol.

Mornin' Tuck!
Well, the guitar is good for you if:
- you like the way it sounds - you like the way it feels in your hands - it's well built and looking beautiful and you like looking at it
This is all there's to it actually
Regarding the poster, no worries man, when it's ready, let me know!

Yes sir! I have been practicing like crazy, also using my practice log (works well for me). I'm gonna lose my mind if I don't get a good internet connection at my house soon so we can get moving on my lesson plan Fin. Aid/scholarship payout is set for the 21st, so I should be back in business with some videos then, and you can look over my progress and take me to the next step man.
Man Cos, this is my riff I came up with. It sounds to much like Metallica, I want to make it more modernish haha. I did 4 tracks and panned them everywhere. The lead is horrendous, but then again, I am not very good yet If you have a chance Cos, would you mess with it, modify it, add, take away, or anything and record how you would play it? Maybe I could use that as a lesson, by practicing it to your specifications and timing etc, I would could learn so much from the comparison of what I naturally played and recorded, to how it's done by a professional. Just an idea, I would love that as a lesson bro.
If I could upload videos, I would have made a video man. If you can make it for a lesson for me sometime, I'll get a video up somehow some way asap. The school opens back up Monday so I could do it then.

OMG, That is awesome Cos! Did you do it yet? If you haven't, I will be be there for the live chat no matter what! My internet is scheduled for reconnect Friday, and GMC just drafted my bank for my 6 month renewal, so I'm almost back in the game!
My goal for this semester is to put in a minimum of two hours a night during the week, Minimum of 10 hours per weekend, and attend 2 video chats per week. Obviously if I don't have homework I'll be able to practice a lot more than that. Also, to keep you updated on my equipment, I had the Ibanez RGD320 for about three days and loved it, but at the music store I had also played an Ibanez SA series 260, and it was literally the most comfortable feeling guitar I have played yet, so after your comment about "getting what I like," I went back and swapped guitars. Oh man Cos, It's just the perfect guitar for me. The salesman also talked me into buying a Blackstar HT-5 Ministack.. and a Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker. Man, I don't have much experience, but Blackstar amps impressed the heck out of me!
Also, My Frat's golf tourney was pushed back until October 19, I'll start putting posters all over town the first part of September after I get your approval. Hope you're having a good week!
-Tucker

Hey Tuck! Great to hear that man - once you go for what you like, you'll never be wrong
Regarding the Blackstar! Go for it! Great amps! I haven't done the v-chat yet, as I was waiting for your approval and also, please tell me in which of the upcoming Thursdays in September you will be joining my chat, so that I can prepare it for then
