GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Straight Vs Syncopated Soloing
Posted by: Pedja Simovic May 19 2009, 03:04 PM
Hello GMC !
Welcome to another in class type collaboration. I have to say I was really thinking hard what should be your next in class type collaboration. I was analyzing your solos from previous collaborations and noticed that biggest problem in most takes was your phrasing. To be more exact, I am talking about down beat and up beat type rhythm and playing. This lead me to finally create backing track which is suitable for many sorts of solos (which I will talk about later) but we will use it for Straight vs Syncopated soloing !
Ok, so our topic for this in class type collaboration is Straight rhythm vs Syncopated rhythm soloing !
This means that your solo has to contain both types of rhythms. Straight rhythm is basically if you start on Down beat (1 2 3 4) and play rhythm like Whole, Half, Quarter, Eight and Sixteen notes ! It is essential that your rhythm here doesn't carry over when you are doing this , in other words you are not using any DOTS OR TIES ! (to make things easier for you guys). Syncopated rhythm is opposite from Straight rhythm. You need to start your phrases on Up beat (one AND two AND three AND four AND - so you start on AND always!). It is also essential that with syncopated rhythm melodies or your solo sounds OF BEAT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ! Another trick to achieve syncopated rhythm is to use TRIPLETS. The best triplet to throw you of is Quarter note triplet !!! You can also use doted rhythms when playing syncopated melodies, in fact I highly recommend you do it (dotted quarters will work wonders here of course!). Remember that you can also start on up beat and keep playing regular rhythm and it will sound syncopated !!!
I hope this little information and intro was very valuable for you before you start tackling your solos.
Backing track is at 140 bpm and is in A minor. I used Latin type feel in Bass and Drums with very specific Piano sound. I hope you dig it !
Chord progression is : // A min / A min / B min7b5/ E7 / / A min / A min / B min7b5/ E7 / / A min7 Amin6 / A min7 Amin6 / D min7/ G7 / / A min / A min / A min (E7#9)/ E7#9 //
Notice how backing track has chords entering before they actually need to appear. This is ANTICIPATION, Syncopated rhythm and Harmonic Displacement ! I moved on purpose some of the chords one eight note earlier. See if you can spot where chords appear earlier in the chord progression.
About soloing :
- Use arpeggios (if you want and can - A harmonic Minor is mostly key center - Over A min7 A min6 you can use A DORIAN MODE (G major scale) - D min7 G7 part is A aeolian or A natural minor (A minor pentatonic if you want to simplify it) - E7#9 you can do arpeggios or E altered scale (F melodic minor) as well as E half whole diminished scale.
I hope to hear some cool takes in this one guys. It should be lots of fun and a challenge ( I HOPE!!!).
Deadline for submitting your takes 7th of June ! I have decided to extend the deadline after receiving only couple of takes.
Let me know if you have any questions and need any help !
Enjoy the backing !
Pedja

Hey, I just popped in to see what's happening in this thread and I have listened to the solo! I've finished my first take but this one makes it sound... bad I especially liked the intro rhythmic variations and the run at the end. The tone is also very good, it's warm and natural for my ears.
I wanted to rerecord my take anyway because I messed up something with the input signal, there are lots of buzzing. I'll post the corrected one asap!

Guys I just posted guitar pro file of solo I submitted today.
Use it to analyze rhythms and get ideas. I strongly recommend you try to transcribe my solo by ear as it will help you identify those tricky rhythms on your own !
You can download it on the very first page along with backing track and my take.
Guys I posted Youtube video for my solo, hope that helps as well.

On the other hand, maybe the auto sign-up gives that people who have no time for a collaboration are in one...

Here is another take, perfectly balanced between straight and syncopated rhythms. There might be a tiny little problem to be accepted thought ...
Sorry, just kidding of course. I regular come back to this backing/task and was running out of ideas last night. Always play the same stuff similar to my first take. I thought to study your perfectly tabbed GP file would help to clear my mind and wake up some other ideas. Time is running out soon ...
