i have heard some talk about ear training and relative pitch, does anyone know a free site that could teach me to have relative pitch?

How you can tell what exactly? If you have got good relative pitch?

Good training for relative pitch is firstly to understand intervals (you can chek my lesson) then play a note and try and hum a specific interval to it. For instance, play a C and then try and hum a 5th (which would be G). You can find programs and pages on the web that will test you). When you can do that with all the intervals in any key you have great relative pitch

I know a fun way to practise relative pitch!
-Use real songs that YOU LIKE, as your guide.

For example;
Listen to the song "Smells like teen spirit" by Nirvana.
The first interval we will hear is: from the first fret on the low E-string - to the first fret on the A-string.
Though the interval is the same even if you for example play it on the 12th fret on the B-string - to the 12h fret on the high E-string. It's just in a different scale, and octave.

Whoops, you've just learned one of the intervals!

So now, whenever you hear a solo you want to play, refer to "Smells like teen spirit" and listen if that interval match the one in the solo.

Nevermind what the intervals are called, at this stage.
Just listen and recognize the intervals by ear at first.

Easy and fun, huh?

I've only been working on ear training for a few months now, and it's already paying off. www.good-ear.com is a great practice tool.

Make sure you practice intervals on your guitar while you use that website. Memorizing the names of them is easy enough, but applying them to the guitar can be tricky without some hands on practice.

Another thing that works for me is playing little kid songs. Try playing Marry Had A Little Lamb, Amazing Grace, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, your country's nation anthem... pretty much any melody you can whistle. It's a lot harder than it sounds if you force yourself not to look up the sheet music.

that sound doesnt play on the goodear site.........i guess without the sound..i can become a better guesser ayeeeeeeee

i had to install the plugin. i use firefox, at the top of the window it said it needed the plugin. i went to the site, downloaded quicktime, and now the sound works.

i think that tool is useful. not sure why, my instincts tell me that there are some positive effects here wrt getting your brain in better musical shape, sort of like musical brain weight lifting. i have been thinking about this stuff lately. i find myself improving, and wonder, what exactly caused that. i know, practice. but what actually happens in your brain. i was also thinking that proper nutrition and exercise might have a beneficial effect. especially nutrition. something has to be going on in your brain, and anything you can do to help it do the job.
