What are some power chords that sound egyptian? I play in drop D mostly. Just messing around on the low D I was thinking open D, E, F, A flat, A sounded close. Also how would I write an egyptian lead over power chords?

I think you could get a bit of Egyptian vibe if you'd play power chord driven riffs over Phrygian mode/scale notes.
Here is a cool lesson for inspiration: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Around-The-World-Egypt/
You could try using the same scale for power chord riff construction and lead, to stay on the safe side.

When it comes to lead, besides scale choice the interpretation is important in order to transfer the oriental vibe.
Try incorporating lots of trills and hammer-on>pull-off licks played half step apart. Sinisa's lesson is a great example of this. With oriental vibe I think these embellishments are more important than actual note choice. When playing quick trills, you can pretty safely use "wrong" notes as well because you won't really play and keep sustained those "outside of the scale" note for too long, rather they will be more like passing notes.

Please let me know how this goes, I'm interested to hear the results smile.gif

I did see that lesson-but I was wanting a heavier vibe. But it will help me learn and hopefully I can go from there. I guess what I struggle with is knowing how to make up a lead that is in key over power chords. It just confuses me. I can look at tabs and play simple leads (I can not shred) but I want to make up a cool egyptian lead over power chords. I just dont know how.

Have you tried playing the chords E5, F5, G#5(NB this power chord should have the notes G# and E) and A5? Particularly the E5-F5 movement will give you an exotic feel. Many metal songs are pretty much based around those two chords only.

Recording a riff using those chords, and then solo using the E phrygian dominant scale:

To make it sound even more exotic, use subtle techniques such as micro bends and slides. Sinisa's lessons are good examples of this.

It would be interesting to hear how this works out for you!

Thank you so much! I do have a question before I work on this- Do I stay in that scale even when the power chords change? Are there certain notes I need to hit as the chords change? or will it not matter as long as I stay in that scale?

Exactly, you can do what you want as long as you are playing in that scale.

I havent had a chance to work on this much-between work (12-14 hour days) , gym, girlfriend and learning other songs with the band I have been swamped. Ill record something once I do come up with a decent sound. If any of you wanna share a recording in the egyptian style, feel free!

That's fair enough. I'm sure you'll come around to it smile.gif

I have never actually worked on anything egyptian sounding. Maybe I should do so?
