Still trying to get this one up to speed. I'm up to 65bpm at the moment and the piece is at 100 I think so it's still far from being done mad.gif But I am making progress with it, but am finding it hard to remember the pattern as the speed increases.

You don't have to get it up to 100 BPM! If you can record yourself playing at 65 BPM I would like to hear it!

Good job!!!! I would suggest to practice it at a slower tempo and make sure you have a full control over your hands! This exercise will help you develop picking and work on chord tones!

Yeah sure, bring it on. I'll keep pluggin away at that one too.
I was wondering, I've got my an exam coming up in just over a month where I have to improvise over progressions, is there any tips you can give me on how to analyze it and really use the modes properly with it.
This is an example of what it will be.
C6, Am9, Dm9, G11, C, Am7, Bm7, D7, G6, G6, F#m7, B9, E, G7#5.
He'll play it once on his own then I improv over the next three times.

Let's work on this chord progression than! If we will analyze the first three chords we will get this:
C6 - C - E - G - A
Ami9 - A - C - E - G - B
Dmi9 - D - F - A - C - E
What I want you to do is to write the rest of the chords the same way and I will explain you what you can play over those chords!

Ok so
C6- C E G A
Am9 - A C E G B
Dm9- D F A C E
G11 - G A D F C
C - C E G
Am7 - A C E G
Bm7 - B D F# A
D7 - D F# A C
G6- G B C E
F#m7 - F# A C# E
B9 - B D# F# A C#
E - E G# B
G7#5 - G B F D#

C6- C E G A
Am9 - A C E G B
Dm9- D F A C E
G11 - G A D F C
C - C E G
Am7 - A C E G
Bm7 - B D F# A
D7 - D F# A C
G6- G B C E
F#m7 - F# A C# E
B9 - B D# F# A C#
E - E G# B
G7#5 - G B F D#

G11 - will be G - B - D - F - C
G6- G - B - D - E

The rest is correct!

Now let's analyze the chord progression:
C6, Am9, Dm9, G11, C, Am7 part of C major scale
If we will use numbers we will get:
I - VI - II - V - I - VI
So you can play:
A minor pentatonic

D minor Pentatonic

E minor Pentatonic

C major Scale

I would like you to analyze this part now:
Bm7, D7, G6, G6
Use the same technique that I have been using!
Let me know if you have any questions!

Bm7 - B, D, F#, A
D7 - D, F#, A, C
G6 - G, B, D, E
This Is I belive a progression in G major.
A minor pentatonic, B minor pentatonic and E minor pentatonic.
The way I look at this progression is that if there's D7 there, 7 chord is normally the 5th degree of a major (G).
Would I then be more inclined to use the phrygian over the Bm7 as the 3rd mode or is that not the way to analyze it?

You are absolutely correct! And F#m7, B9, E, G7#5 are from E major!
Now I would like you to start practicing using the method I showed you!
To start let's keep it simple!
For the first part C6, Am9, Dm9, G11, C, Am7 play:
A minor pentatonic
For this part
Bm7, D7, G6, G6 E minor/ A minor pentatonic
For the last part F#m7, B9, E, G7#5
E major pentatonic
We will start adding new scales to it every other day!
Do you have a backing track to practice this progression?
Let me know if you have any questions!

No I don't have a backing track, but I can record myself playing the piece and then improvise over it.

The chord progression is the same as you gave me one bar each chord and the tempo is 100 BPM
Let me know how you feel about it and we can start getting into playing over it!

Yeah I like it. I'm having trouble with recording on reaper at the moment but I'm hoping to get it sorted tomorrow ( got practice tonight) so will be good to go after that. Just out of curiosity what software do you use to record on and do you have any reccomendations?

Awesome! I am looking forward to hear your take!
I use Logic and I think this is the best software for recording! I use it all the time and all my tracks are done through it!
