At the beginning of this song at the slow part - Angus Young plays notes that sounds like he's pinching the string as he's plucking it - thats the best i can describe it. i have heard this on other songs as well. what is this technque.

Hey my friend ! I know the exact bit you mean.. I love that song.

Use the middle and ring finger on your picking hand. Rest them on the 2 strings that are being played and pluck them upwards. It's a kind of pulling motion. It's also a very staccato sound so as soon as you've played the note you need to put your finger back in place on the string to mute them just before you play them again.

This technique works for people who are using a guitar pick. You can still hold your pick between your thumb and 1st finger like you normally would do because you're not using them for this part. It's the 2nd and 3rd finger that do this job

It's not easy to see but you can just see his fingers doing the pulling motion. The whole hand moves with it too.. as you pull upwards to sound the notes the hand moves away from the strings in rhythm with the technique.



P.S. Update... I've just picked up the guitar to try it and I realised there's 3 strings being played for the intro so you will need to use your pick as well !

That's it. I think the Who - Pete Townsend used it on a few songs as well. I will have to try it when I get home. I was getting a similar effect by pinching a high string with my thumb and index fingerand pulling up slightly and then muting it right after but the other way seems more efficient.

Yes you could do it that way too, although you'll need your thub and 2 fingers and somewhere to store your pick temporarily !
