Hi Sunny!! Welcome to your thread for Gab's Army! In this thread we will work together to become more complete guitarists / musicians.
Please share with me all the information possible to let me know you as well as some videos playing.

Some extra questions:

- How long have you been playing guitar?
- Which are your favorite bands /musicians?
- How many hours a day can you dedicate to guitar?
- What do you know about theory?

Hi Gab, thanks for opening a thread for me. smile.gif

I'll start by answering your questions.

QUOTE
- How long have you been playing guitar?

Playing guitar one of my hobbies and I've been playing since high-school, around 25 years. I haven't been playing regularly because too often life got in way (especially work and kids). I started to play more again around two years ago because I find it so relaxing.

QUOTE
- Which are your favorite bands /musicians?

That's difficult to say, let me try. I listen mostly to metal and jazz, lately I've been focused on progressive metal. I loved Judas Priest and King Diamond since forever, lately I admire BTBAM the Parallax albums, Scale the Summit, Soul Cycle albums, Gojira to name a few.

I enjoy playing different stuff than I listen to now (curious isn't it?), old metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Helloween), punk (Sex Pistols), alternative rock (The Cure), also classical pieces.

QUOTE
- How many hours a day can you dedicate to guitar?

Heh, hours are a luxury. Realistically I'm able to practice 20-40 minutes per day and lately I've been practicing regularly 2x 40 min and 2x 20 min weekly.

QUOTE
- What do you know about theory?

Quite a lot, but from a piano player perspective. I've attended music school for 10 years (elementary and high) very long time ago. I haven't studied any of guitar theory - it should be more or less the same but it seems so awkwardly explained that I avoided indulging into it. I'd like to though, I'm curious about it.

I'll get to describe my goals and my practicing routine later when I have another moment free. I can tell you more about my skills and you are probably interested to see me play. I'll try to record some riffs and technical stuff I'm working on later too.

Cheers,
Sunny

Hi Gab and merry Christmas to you. \o

I'm working on a setup to record my playing. I've finally found a satisfactory camera today to record video. I have to record audio separately so I guess I'll have to manually sync the tracks. I'm curious if it is how it's usually done? I have no idea how hard it can be to sync the tracks and how accurate the result is going to be. Would it help to not use headphones so that camera records audio track that can make syncing easier? Or is there any other "trick" you know of that would make syncing easy?

Should I use a metronome if there is no backing track to record over? Does it help judge the timing or is it in a way on recording? These are all probably silly questions but all are popping up now that I'm messing with this stuff. smile.gif

Thanks,
Sunny

Hi mate! There are never silly questions. wink.gif

I also record audio on my Daw (Cubase) and video with my Camera, and then sync both things with Premiere or Vegas. This is not something difficult but there are some tips that can make it easier.

- Use the same audio sample rate with your daw and video. If your camera records audio with 48000 Hz, set your daw with the same bit rate.
- Don't use headphones unless you are micking an acoustic guitar. If you are using electric guitar, then it will be easier if you can hear the camera audio capture to sync the audio track.

- It always good to have a pre metronome to sync both audios. If you aren't using a backing, using a metronome would be always better than nothing, unless you prefer a free tempo in your take (for artistic reasons).

I hope that this clarifies your questions. smile.gif

These are all great tips (thanks!) and I finally got to record my playing yesterday. smile.gif

In this first video I'm playing a lesson from Ben's Bushido:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Hand-Basics/

I mastered this lesson some time ago and together with Todd's Bootcamp it helped me get grip on alternate picking. I lost a bit of speed and accuracy since then I see due to not practicing. I could play it at 140 bpm and here I am not fully accurate at 120 bpm.

This second video is the rhythm lesson I'm currently working on:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-gu...c-metal-rhythm/

I haven't learned it whole yet and though I mostly practice it at 100 bpm I recorded it at 90 bpm as I'm more accurate at that speed. It's really hard for me to step up the tempo, galloping and left hand jumps being the most problematic. But as it has interesting rhythm patterns, it's pretty cool to play it at lower speeds as well, I actually had to work a bit to bring it down to 80 bpm and then record it at 90 bpm. tongue.gif

The errors in the second part are due to me being nervous to make it all in one take and of course I need more practice as that's the most recent part I learned.

I'm looking forward to your feedback. smile.gif

Next I'll tell you about my goals, where I see my weaknesses and my practice routine.

Let me know also if you have any feedback/advice on recordings, for instance if the camera angle is ok. I recorded sound with GarageBand and put together video & audio in iMovie, removing the audio track from the video after syncing. It was very easy to sync audio track to video with audio.

Hi mate! Exciting stuff! The videos looks fantastic! The video quality, lightening, camera angle and audio are top level so there is nothing to criticize. I can notice that you are a bit more advanced with the right hand picking lesson. There are obvious timing issues (mostly in the triplets section) but it's just a matter of practice. Your body and both hands and arms are too rigid, I think that relaxing them will make you playing flow better.

The rhythm lesson is not bad at all! Your tone is very clear and helps me to notice that your palm muting technique is very consistent. There are some timing issues but once again, some diary practice will help you to master this one and to slowly increase the tempo.

So.. to summarize. You are doing a very good job with these two lessons. You can keep on playing these ones the whole week and maybe we can add some other ones that cover other topics.

Thanks for the good feedback, it's really encouraging and makes me want to play and practice. biggrin.gif

I'll be working on these two lessons more this week and I'll try to be more relaxed when playing. I didn't realize I was so stiff until I saw the video. ohmy.gif

There are few more lessons I'm working on right now and I'm alternating between them mostly according to what I feel like playing at the moment. I selected them in aim to cover different techniques. I'm still looking for lessons that cover sweep picking and tapping. For rhythm I chose the ones that sound good and are easy enough for me. I'll try to post videos for all of these too.
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Land-Of-Legato/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginn...String-Bending/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey-5/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Sum-41-Style/

My practice looks like this:
- I start with warm-up stretches, 1-2 minutes
- then I alternate between chromatic exercises and playing scales, 5 minutes
- next is either one or two blocks of 20-30 minutes practice, depending how much time I have
I do a technical lesson followed by a rhythm one when I do two blocks and I often take the lessons that I've practiced the least recently.

Hi friend. It's a pleasure to work with you! I have to say that you are totally on track with your routine. The lessons chosen are exactly what I would recommend you so let's go for them. Also, It's very important that you practice every day unless for 30 minutes or 1 hour to see real results so always try to find that time for you.

So let's work on this during this week and please keep me updated!

Hi Gab, how are you doing? It's been a while since I posted but I have been practicing more or less regularly. I had some breaks due to work but now it looks good and I've got a new video for you. smile.gif

It's your (awesome) lesson Sum 41 Style:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Sum-41-Style/

I haven't been able to learn it at 180 bpm, so I'm playing it at 160 bpm. I double tracked the guitar to get the fuller sound and to hear if I'm off the beat any. Surprisingly it doesn't sound that bad at all, apart from the first bar, which is a disaster. tongue.gif
Does double-tracking make it hard for you to judge my playing? Btw, interesting tidbit, I've spent 8 hours total on this lesson.

I've been careful how much I mute different strings in different parts of the song. I chose to play all down-strokes for practice sake. The hardest part for me was learning the rhythm riffs in higher tempo. I mean lesson is level 3 and I'm not even close to 180 bpm in that part. Ouch! laugh.gif
Overall I'm pretty happy with where I got with this lesson, and am a bit fed up with it right now, so I think I'll pick another one and start working on it. It will be one of yours, either Metallica or Iron Maiden (for the beginners). I won't forget this one, and I'll work on whatever you say I should improve.

The rest of the lessons I'm working on are the same as I previously posted.
* It's going well with Basic Metal Rhythm lesson; I can play it at 110 bpm and will record it next.
* Ben's land of legato is difficult, I'm barely at 90 bpm, so I have quite some more to work on.
* On alternate picking front life is good and I'm working on hand sync. I'm not following any special lesson, but doing a bunch of different exercises.
* Bending.. yes, bending.. well, my fingers have stopped bleeding, so I can concentrate on getting the right pitch.

That's it for now, thanks for your time! \o

Hi Sunny!! Awesome post! I have to say that everything you said here sounds great for me. The take is very close, it sounds clean, it sound polished and the only details is that timing is not 100% tight, but it's nothing very dramatic. Just focus on it.

If you feel a bit tired of this lesson, don't worry, give it a rest and go for another one. Always remember that we are not here working on lessons, we are taking your playing to a new level every time so the goals is always over the particular lesson you are practicing.

Iron Maiden or Metallica for beginners are two good lessons to start working. Choose one of them and start as soon as you can!

And regarding the double guitar, it's ok for giving feedback. There is no problem with it.

Ok mate, keep on the hard work and let me know when you have news.

Hi Gabi, I'm back practicing again after quite a pause!

I've been following the forums and have seen that there has been a lot going on for you and your band Cirse. BIG GRATZ on your success, I'm very happy for you! \o

Myself I've been practicing for a while back then but haven't posted anything, then I stopped for summer due to projects and summer vacation. Later I put too much time into sporting outdoors, running and cycling mostly, and I lost the routine and couldn't get back to regular practicing.. sad.gif ..until now. smile.gif

I gave myself some goals too. I want to get comfortable recording my playing, and make the whole process a routine. It has stopped me earlier from posting my progress to you here and I have never posted a REC, which is my second goal, to post and pass one REC. For starters. tongue.gif

I dug out my old routine and started working on the following lessons to practice picking, legato and sweeping (new to me).
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Hand-Basics/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Hand-Synch/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Land-Of-Legato/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Sweeps_Major_and_Minor/

I must say that I had a hard time finding a good sweep picking lesson. All that I found seemed too hard, or too complicated. I bookmarked three more but chose to go with Lians, which feels comfortable right now (I've just started so we'll see).

For bending, phrasing and rhythm I got a selection of lessons to choose from, but haven't decided yet which ones I'll work on. I'll focus more on phrasing too, in my earlier routine I skipped it completely, intentionally.

So my plan for the following weeks is to work on the above lessons and foremost record myself more often.

Thanks for reading, off to play now! laugh.gif

Hi Sunny! Great to hear from you again here! smile.gif

I think that the list of lessons that you suggested is great. You would be covering a wide range of techniques in your diary routine. It would be important to divide your routines in blocks and dedicate the same amount of time and focus to each technique to balance your technique practice. I think that something like this could work:

1 x 25 m - Alternate Picking

1 x 5 m - Rest

1 x 25 m - Legato

1 x 5 m - Rest

1 x 25 m - Sweep Picking

1 x 5 m - Rest

1 x 25 m - Phrasing

1 x 5 m - Rest

If you have more time you could repeat this whole routine later the same day.

Please start working during this week and keep me updated about how you feel, and off course post here videos, no matter if you feel that they don't reflect your current skills, it's another thing that needs practice: recording.

Hi Gab, how are you doing? It's been a while, I'm happy to be back.

I finally started practicing again. I have been trying to pick it up again ever since summer when I was away and dropped the routine. I found motivation in your guitar gym (thanks!) and in learning some old Metallica songs. tongue.gif

Now I've got a question for you. I'm interested in learning some djent and prog rhythms, and have been looking at these two lessons, but they are too hard for me:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Djent-Time-Signatures/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Fast-P...-Metal-Riffing/

I'm working on them in very slow tempo but I have issues with slowing them down correctly, they are too fast for me to follow even when instructors show them slowly.

Do you know of an easier lesson here at GMC that features the rhythms in this style of playing? Or can you suggest some rhythm exercises that I can work on to slowly build up my "djentiness"? smile.gif

A while ago I listened to some of the Cael's work here on forums and his playing sounded beautiful, not complicated at all, but he is talented and it may be it looked easy just because of that. I don't know maybe I should analyse his work and learn more that way, from him?

Hi mate! Great to see you back here!

There are different ideas that come to mind. At first I think that this lesson has strong Djen influences and it's easier than the ones that you shared: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Papa-Roach-Goes-Djent/

Besides this, I think that it would be helpful to use guitar pro speed trainer and loop the different rhythms of those lessons starting at slow tempos. You can use a similar method than the one that I'm using at the Guitar Gym thread. You can take 4 rhythm patterns each week and work on them diary. What do you think?

Also, have you seen this old thread: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=40594
