Hey everyone,
So I've been looking for a lute. I live in Toronto and have found some manufacturers, but their costs are $5000 and up. I'm not looking for anything special at this point as I've never even played one. I've found some on ebay, but since I've never played one and can't find any stores that actually sell them, I'm not really sure how to go about buying one. Here is one that I found that is probably around the price I'm going to be willing to pay: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/7-COURSE-ROSEWOOD-T...=item519d9725fe and that is a cheaper version of a more expensive type like this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/RENAISSANCE-LUTE-Ha...=item4aaceda2eb I've never bought an instrument on the internet before. Anyone have any tips? Has anyone even played a lute before and could help me out? I'm trying to avoid spending $600 on something that is the equivalent of a $100 beginner guitar. Any advice will help! Also, if you're interested in why I want to play a lute, I was inspired by Kvothe from the book series Kingkiller Chronicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Name_of_the_Wind). I highly recommend reading this if anyone is interested in fantasy or science (it kind of combines both in an epic story). Thanks! |

Hey mate! I don't have any experience with this instrument but I'm amazed of the fact that you have been inspired by a fantasy book to start playing the instrument. Regarding buying instruments Online, I don't recommend it since I prefer to try an instrument before buying it, check how it feels, how it sounds and if it's comfortable for you. However I assume that maybe it's difficult for you to try this instrument since there isn't one near from where you live. I hope that somebody here could help you.
Maybe this site could help... http://www.lutesoc.co.uk/pages/introductio...on-the-internet -------------------- Visit my Personal Board

Yea, I don't like buying instruments on the internet for this reason. I found a place in Toronto that has a lute available to rent in August, but I will be moving to Alberta in June, so that's out of the question. Perhaps I can find some sort of group on the internet that would be more knowledgeable about the different quality of lute available. I'll definitely check out that site you provided. Thanks! Also, the character in the book that inspired me is awesome - you'd have to read it to fully understand, but he is a prodigy and masters the lute. I started watching videos of lute players and I want one to tinker around with and use in songs that I write. |

If you are a fan of fantasy and Science, I recommend the Coldfire Trilogy. I lost count at how many times I have re-read this series. I have gone through two, if not three sets of paperbacks! I have even given a couple away! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldfire_Trilogy EDIT: I just wanted to post bookstuffs. Sorry, but I cannot help with the lute(I am a huge nerd) ^^ This post has been edited by Nihilist1: Feb 22 2012, 08:35 AM -------------------- All the elders have fallen down...

Ah, amazing instrument! Unfortunately I never had a chance to play the lute, but I would recommend you NOT to buy it over the internet. I'm not thinking about possible fraud, etc., but simply - you do not know what to expect !
QUOTE Construction and finishes consistent with traditional practices. Oh,this helps a lot. -------------------- |

I like fantasy books so I could add this one to the list of books to read. Nice! It's supposed to be a 3 book series and there are 2 out right now. The story is really interesting because it's not standard type of fantasy you would expect. Kvothe is badass! |
