Great! I am happy that you have decided to join my program!
Let's start with a very cool and simple exercise that will help you develop your technique and will sync your hands together!
You have to practice it at a very very slow tempo and make sure that you have a full control over both of your hands!
Here is the tab

Hi Alex,
Many thanks for this interesting exercise.
I started to work on it last night. Starting at a slower BPM as you suggested - this is indeed recommended at first for the last section especially-.
I will work on increasing the speed gradually.
I'll try to post my take shortly.
I shall see if my sound card that was presenting some major issues in the last few months will hold and allow me to.
Anyhow, thanks for this 1st exercise. Looking forward to your mentoring.
JPBluestring
PS: I plan to submit my take using Soundcloud. Any issue with that?
Hi Alex,
I am out of the loop again with PC and sound card issues. I am getting desperate with this thing that is slowing me down in my progress in the mentoring program!
I continue to practice the exercise but had to dig out my old Metronome from the attics.
Anyhow I hope you don't think I dropping out.
I'll try to set up my laptop as the studio PC is acting out.
Thank you for your understanding.
JPBluestring
Hi Alex,
Finally resolved my sound card issue.
Compounded problems: issue with driver and configuration after soundcard repair and change of motherboard!
Anyhow, here are two takes of Exercise 1.
I think I have to re-learn how to count - This exercise was good for me to realise that music has a lot to do with counting!
In Take 2 I think I am more in sync with tempo. U be the judge.
I am looking forward for your comments.
Many thanks for your patience!
JPB

Take 2:
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/exercise-1-jpb-20120519-2
You did a very good job! It's almost perfect! The first take you are rushing a little bit and playing ahead of the beat!
The second track you are ahead as well but doing better! My suggestion would be try to control yourself and really focus on the beat you can even try to hold yourself back! You will hear the results fast!
Add this exercise into your warm up routine!
I will create a new assignment for you in in a meantime!
Thank you Alex.
You are right I can see it on the wave shape - my playing Vs the beat. This is a good exercise. There is more to it than it may look like in the first look.
Thanks for your helpful comment.
JPB
Looking forward for a new one! (I will keep practising this exercise from time to time)
Many thanks
JPB
So! I have a new assignment for you!
We will start to get into improvisation a little bit more! And I will explain you how the stuff works
Here is a very cool II - V - I backing track in E minor
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/ii-v-i-jam
Over A7
A minor blues pentatonic
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Over D major 7 F# minor pentatonic
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Try to be as melodic as possible and
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!
Sounds very interesting. I will get to it. Cool I have to learn the dorian scale.
Oups! The pressure is on but that's good I suppose. You know how to trigger the right buttons. I'll try not to disappoint and be creative.
I worked on it last night and really enjoy the challenge with this one. Mixing E dorian with penta is a new territory for me. I'am used to stick with my good old friend "Penta" if you see what I mean. I think I have some good licks over the E dorian but switching to the A penta or F# penta is not obious at first glance. This is good as it forces me to get out of my comfort zone.
Thank you for this relevant exercise.
JPB
Hi Alex,
Here is a first cut - still rough on the edge. With more practice I would improve but I was anxious to get your point of view.
I tend to be stuck on the E dorian mode I think. I tried here and there to include the A minor penta and F# but I seem to lose the momentum.
Somehow I don't really hear those two mixing harmonically with the E dorian. Maybe my imagination?
I value your guidance and insightful recommendations.
Many thanks.
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/ii-v-i-in-e-minor-expression-1#play
Hi Alex,
Gave it a little bit more practice and tried to prolong the backing track in Cubase.
This cut has only one splice at .026 to .031
Allowing more time I would get more ideas as you say and with practice I think it would get more interesting.
Still having some timing issues. Hearing it back after record helps realising this.
This is a good exercise.
Hope you feel I'm going in the right direction?
Many thanks for your comments.
JPB

Thanks
I think I am starting to get it. Adding those responses (Blues inspiration from the cotton fields) creates a new dimension.
I still think I should add more silence in this last take.
Still timing issues. Got to work on this.
Hope I understood the call-response technique.
Thank you Master.
JPB

Cool!
Responding to a Master is not something I do often.
I think I hear your call!
Still timing issues - Sorry

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your comments. I'll give it a try.
BTW I don't understand what happened with my downloads from SoundCloud.
It seems that my last download replaced the version in my last 3-4 postings with the last one for the 8-bar exercise ??
I can't find a way to edit each post with their original versions.
Any idea what might have happened?
JPB
Here is a new attempt going from cage 1 in 5th position to 10th and up.
Timing is getting a little better.
JPB

Could'nt help it when I heard it from Zoom's page. Cool groove!
I tried to incorporate a few silences and be more in time to stay in the spirit of your last comments.
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/blues-groove-3-jpb
Hi Alex,
Feel more comfortable adding those silences now.
It really helps building confidence as you have a little bit more time to breath and think about the next phrase.
Really good advice. Thanks a lot.
Hope you like this take.
JPB

Hi Alex,
I was out of the circuit for a couple of days (extra work-time this week)
Anyhow, back to serious stuff now over the week-end. This backtrak is very interesting indeed!
Anxious to hear what could follow. I think I understand what you mean by "working more on the soloing"
I have a tendency to go back in the same path too easily. I need to explore new territories I guess.
Thanks for your help as always.
JPB
PS: While awaiting to get back on Expression 5 here is a take I could not resist from a backing track from Slavenko's page. I feel the progress. Thanks Alex I think your good advices are paying off. Ooooo!
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/slavenko-blues-trk-jpb-take-2
Hum! I normally copy the link an insert it as a Soundcloud clip.
I can see that by putting my mouse over it it offers me the option to download once it saved on GMC site.
Am I missing something??
Sorry about that.
Here's another trial.
Thanks
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/expression-5
I think I found the reason why. Had to click on "downloadable" option indeed. (Don't know why the option was changed on this one??) Anyhow, hope it works now.
Thanks
JPB
Alex, I think I am lost in confusion with Soundcloud. My save seem to always link to my latest downoald on Soundcloud which may not be related to this tread. (i.e. collab confused with this tread.)
Here is my latest cut for Expression 6.
Hoping it gets to you correctly this time! (NB: I'm using "Copy link location from Soundclourd??)
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/expression-6
Thank you Alex.
I can feel it too.
Many thanks for you good advices.
JPB
Thanks Alex!
This is very interesting.
It sounds a little off while being in the scale. Very Cool Indeed! (VCI)
I like it.
I will try not to disappoint with my take and measure up - if I can
Thanks for the challenge.
JPB.
PS: I see that you are challenging me with an arpeggio now. I'll give it a try Master.
Good morning Alex,
Here's my take for this week.
This duo incorporating distorted and clean guitars is getting interesting.
Of course, I'm still not there but I think your lead is giving me good paths.
Liked the arpeggio in it. This is great.
Listening to your style, I have yet to figure out how you achieve this loose but rhythmic style.
I'd love to be able to get there eventually.
Thanks so much for your time. I really appreciate your guidance.
I feel privileged to jazz with you a little.
JPB
I hope you'll like it!
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/expression-6d
Hi Alex,
Sorry for the delay.
Not quite there I feel but it's improving I think.
Thanks for your patience.
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/expression-6e
Hi Alex,
It's been a busy week for me so I did not find all the time I wanted to trial this out. However I did study your lesson on sweep arpeggios and practiced this a bit using the chords you referred me to in our collab. Great lesson by the way - very instructional.
A few questions:
When playing arpeggios, is it ok to go outside the arpeggio a bit and add one or two notes to help creating a melody?
Do the fingering and picking playing matter much? (hammer and slide, and up down strokes etc.)?
I think I am starting to see the neck differently now as you alluded to. This is great as it seems to open up new opportunities for melody when combining with the scale!!
That said, I find I tend to stick to the arpeggio as represented on the the chord pictogram as opposed to go outside the box and create a melody with the arpeggio notes.
This is new territory for me, I admit. However, nice territory.
Thanks for your guidance as usual. You put me in the right direction.
Sincerely,
JPBluestring
PS: I'll try to post my take over the week-end
Hey Alex,
Here's my take for this week.
I think I'm getting there ??
Listen to the last segment I succeeded in adding one odd note like you do (hey hey! )
I like it
Thanks for your valuable comments - It really helps.
JPbluestring
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/expression-6f
That looks like an interesting exercise indeed.
Thanks I'll get to it.
JPBluestring
Hi Alex,
Thanks for checking up.
Have been practicing the scales and it's going relatively well I think.
Still confused with bad fingering habits. I think I should use the Index, Major and pinky fingers -in that order- but with years of playing using the ring finger for the second not on the string I get confused all the time. Does it really matter if one can do it anyway?
Thanks
JPBluestring.
So here is what we will be doing!
I will be explaining a new theory subject once a week or every other week and will be giving assignments based on it!
Theory questions (will help me to get a better idea where to start! )
- Harmonize G major scale
- Build A7 chord
- Write ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7
- D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F What key this chord progression in?
The theory program sounds very cool!
Thanks for doing this -I know it may become demanding as well.
I think this is a very interesting addition to the Mentoring pgm.
BTW - I am still working on the modes exercise. A bit longer than what I anticipated at first glance.
I guess my memory is failing and I have to get back to reading the tab to follow so it slows me down.
I manage all the modes if I take them slowly while reading them. (Flipping the pages is an issue though.)
I guess it is just a matter of practicing and then I'll remember the patterns.
Obviously it is important to focus on the name of the mode and the key to associate them together.
I think it helps to try to learn by heart the intervallic structure of each mode.
Anyhow, thanks for your mentoring.
This is much appreciated.
JPBluestring.
Hi Alex,
I thought these were a few tough examples of what to expect.
Anyhow here it is:
Harmonize G scale
G A B C D E F G
HARMONIZED WITH A 3RD
B C D E F G A B
A7 Chord
Would be A dominant 7
Chord structure 1, 3, 5, b7
A C E F#
ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7
Thricky starting on a ii with a minor 7th
My guess: Cmi7 Fmaj Dmaj ? (Need to understand the intricacies here)
D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F What key this chord progression in?
D minor
1) Determine A7 structure
I think I will need some help here.
I know the A7 chord per se.
From the fretboard I read from 6th string to 1st: E A E G C# E
However, from the theory
I perspective over A7 is A Dominant 7
Structure: 1, 3, 5, b7
Which would yield:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
1 3 5 7b
A C E Gb
Whats wrong in my theory?
2) Harmonizing the G scale with chords:
Maj Min Min Maj Maj Min Min
Gmaj Ami Bmi Cmaj Dmaj Emi Fmi
?
Thanks for your help
JP
To your Q: b7 or flattened 7th degree from A
Applying the ionian/major scale to my count would work better indeed.
Here we go for the A7 structure: 1, 3, 5, b7
W W h W W W
A B C# D E F# G#
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Not forgetting that the 7th is flattened, we get A7
A - C# - E - G
Nice backing!!!
Thanks this seems to be an interesting challenge.
I like 'pretending'. (Reminds me of a great song from Eric Clapton,.. Pretending! Hum hum!)
JPBluestring
Hi Alex,
Hope you had a good week-end (well deserved)
I don't know if my take will cut it but here it is.
Pretending to be in the key of F ( ) ...
and incorporated progression using Dmin penta, Dmin, Fmai penta and Fmaj
Finally, tried to chip in a G dorian mode scale just to see how it goes.
I know my timing could be better at the end of the soloing.
I guess with a little more practice it would improve.
(Hey, I also tried at the beginning to include a Call/Answer technique wit a few silence here and there!)
I hope you like like it.
JPB

Second download - Sorry.
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/pretending-k-of-f-progression
Clarification please:
( I used your backing above (post 67) where you were only playing rhythm over a drum track - no solo ideas. I added some chords in the background and my own solo ideas from beginning to end)
Is this to say that you want me to create my own backing track and then solo over it progressively and leave half of it with just the backing for the reminder of the track?
Thanks.
JPB
Hi Alex,
Here is a second attempt.
I hope I understand the homework this time!
I tried to be more progressive and build it up.

Thanks Alex,
Glad you like it!
I see the progress. You are pointing me in the right direction. I can feel it.
BTW - Last chat was an eye opener for me. Thanks again.
I am starting to put everything together.
I think you are gonna change my life as Kris put it for the Mentoring Program!
JPB
Here we go. Only pentatonics ovwer the chords as laid out!
Tried to stick with the program as best as I could while keeping the melody.
Hope you concurr ( )

Alex,
Please help.
Is everything about speed?.. getting faster and faster on the lead?
Sometimes I feel that we are forgetting about the melody and the feeling in our playing???
... and maybe, just maybe it is not a question of generation... feelings will always transcend generation in my view.
Where should I evolve to? faster? or feelings?? (Shredding ??? OMG! Sorry guys!)
The Beatles, Clapton, Hendrix, The Stones and BBKing were more about expressing something to generations.
Making even an apolitical point!
There was a cultural message at times,.. even.
Is this Phrasing and lyrics Vs Technique and shredding?
Thanks for your guidance. I understand that there are several markets.
For now, I am trying to understand my connection with scales and melody!
Where do you think the market will evolve in the next 2 years?
So much to learn, so little time to guess!
Guess we're all caught in the same dilemma anyhow!
Thanks for your insight.
JPB
If allowed to say musically..
I meant something like this...
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/blues-expression-1
JPB
I am in for more bending and vibrato.
Please show me the way.
(BTW I agree nobody has a crystal ball!)
JPB.
Ya we'll be monitoring!
JPB
Hi Alex,
Thanks for this new assignment. Seems interesting and I'm trying to link it with the theory.
Question though:
I can hear comfortably Amin penta over Dmin, Gmin penta over Bb, Dmin penta over Gmin but,..
I cannot figure out Amin penta over F. It sounds weird.
There is not even a F in the Amin pentatonic scale.
(Maybe my instinct is to keep wishing to resolve on a F there - Sounds a bit better though if I resolve on the perfect 5th i.e. C)
I understand we are in Dmin progression. (I VI IV III)
Harmonizing for Natural minor I get: Dm - Em - F - Gm - Am - Bb - C
In principle any of these scales (including Am) should sound in "harmony" as this is the "harmonisation" (Right?)
Am I missing a piece here?
(Better to consult with you before I see my doctor for earing testing Haha )
Thanks for your guidance.
JPB
I don't know if I worked this out correctly.
I tried to stick to the scales based on the chord progression.
I find it difficult not to loosen up and go for it on one scale.
The scale switching certainly requires a different concentration
Anyhow here it is.
JPB
PS: I may give it a try tomorrow or Friday if I have the time.

Hi I just wanted to follow up and see how are you doing?
Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!
Hi Alex,
I started to work on the 15-Blues Licks as per your last assignment.
Still working on it but while practicing one of my own composition on the acoustic today,
I surprised myself in incorporating some of your licks into it. (I guess it's getting in somehow..)
Hope you will not be offended.
My rhythm is somewhat different to link with the acoustic rhythm.
Anyhow it also proves that these licks can be interpreted differently from the tab of course.
I'll get back to the assignment this week - promised.
Thanks
JPB.

Well thank you Alex,
Coming from you it's really encouraging.
Maybe I'll try part II later on.
Thanks
JPB
Hi Alex,
Congratulation on your video again- I really like it. It is so original! Really ground breaking! Cool.
Nowadays, I am trying to get back into my own groove.
Got myself a new guitar - An Ibanez AF105 NT - Niiiice!
I think it will be cool for backing.
Changed the bridge for a rosewood to get a richer tone. Did the trick.
Attached is a quick Blues I recorded today.
I tried to keep it dry on the backing to create a cozy dimension.
Now I have to get back on the Modes and get out of my traditional scales. (Got your point on last few posts!)
Backing is a classic I think.
Would appreciate your comments.
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/blues-with-ibanez-af105-nt
Tried something - Not too fast for now. Defining a drum track was not obvious. I'll have to develop my skills in that area for sure.
Only gave it a little time. I am sure I could be more creative but I thought the idea was to get started on this new track for now.
Two tracks attached - one Backing only, the other with a quick fill in for soloing. (To be worked on for sure)
Any how, as usual, I would appreciate your comments.
Many thanks.

2nd Trial: Here is the the second track.
JPB

Did another cut with a better drum track.
This might be more interesting.
Boogie style.
Will need to work on the lead to get out of the usual.
Thanks for your comments.

Decided to dust off the Bass tonight and added one track to it!
This is getting fun but I need to push up the lead definitively.
See 2nd cut.
JPB

Sorry, couldn't sleep with this lead that was bogging me.
Had to redo it but that's it for to night.
Thanks for listening.
JPB

Blues or Boogie shuffle
I - IV - V - VI
I play E5 - A5 - B9 - C9
(E5 and A5 are played in open position with bass line progression on E string, same on A5 with progression on A string)
Rhythm is a steady roll
Thanks
JPB
Anything wrong with my backing? see post 108 above?
Got a track from EZdrummer, added my rhythm and created a bass line with the Bass.
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/little-boogie-1-1
Sorry I should have included a backing track that loops more easily.
I think this one will likely be better for looping in the DAW.
Still learning I guess.
JPB
http://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/little-boogie-contd-backing
Oh my...
Did my take but I am not really satisfied with my backing.
There is a poor transition and that makes things difficult for adding a lead part when looping.
Anyhow, I guess this is something I have to learn to do.
I loved your lead - it was really inspiring (although challenging to follow!!)
Now I have to think about getting more creative if you see what I mean.
I would appreciate your comments.
Many thanks Alex.

Great!
Attached is a new cut wit a little more drive for the AF105NT
I like the idea of combining two scales like you suggest.
Working on it Master!

Many thanks Alex,..
But really we owe you!
I am just starting to understand what I'm doing on the neck! You know!
You're a beacon man! Your guidance is insightful. I feel the progress and I just LOVE IT!
I just wish I could get that sound - that distinctive sound,.. and be able to move from one scale to the other...just like you do.
When I listen to your work it is so unique, present, distinctive and creative!
Your approach to any song always gets us into new territories!
For this, I would like to thank you and recognize this moment... you are making a difference for me,.. and I am sure, for all of us!
(Gee I hope Kristopher reads this!!)
Alex you're the man! Thanks
JPB.
... and what you did for us last December 2nd was just fantastic!
While experiencing a power outage at your home.. and not able to broadcast your video chat session with us..
you went over board and borrowed a minivan from a friend to get to the nearest MacDonald to gain access to a wireless signal to do your lesson.. Man that was out of the ordinary period. (I hope Bogdan reads this!)
I thought... what a nice gesture, what a nice testimony of a truly artistic moment of thinking outside the box!!
You know what I mean,... we were just truly impressed by your "authenticity".
I rest! You have it!
While waiting for the next assignment.
REMEMBERING CCR - JPBluestring
I tried to do one that would loop nicely since the last one was hawful.
Cubase 6 recording- Yamaha Bass, Rhythm and Lead guitar Ibanez AF105-NT - Guitar Rig 5 effect - 120 BPM
I think I got it! In the style of CCR.
Just a groove to add a good lead - (Come on guys!)
We're getting there I think!
Thanks Alex for your guidance.
JPB
https://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/remembering-ccr
Yes you are definitively right! (as usual!)
With some tweaking on the mix down and a better balance between rhythm and lead guitars.
Here's a new take. (Same cut)
Makes sense. Thanks
JPB
https://soundcloud.com/jpbluestring/remembering-ccr-2
How to present it ? _ I don't know quite frankly!
Here is my track after this morning's lesson.
Based on E min of course (definitely a minor!)
I tried to include the principles of harmonization.
I tried to combine scales the best I could while staying creative on the melody!
U be the judge once again!
I worked hard to get one that would loop perfectly.
Kept the lead up front as much as possible.
Gave it some time for the progression to be - allowing a silent here and there.
Balancing the rhythm and lead guitar to give it the right dimension. Worked a bit on panning.
I am sorry, did not include an arpeggio - but working on it.
This is a Salute to a true Guitar Master

Many thanks Alex for the good words of encouragement.
I feel privileged to have learned from a true Master.
You made a real difference not only in my playing but in my understanding of music.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your wife a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Sincere thank you,
JPB
