GMC Forum _ Alex Feather _ Rhythm Corner

Hey guys I have decided to create a Rhythm Corner once a week every Tuesday I will be posting new exercises that will help you develop timing and be in the pocket!
All Lessons will be Tabs and GP 5 files!
There is only one rule:
ALWAYS PRACTICE THOSE EXERCISES USING A METRONOME AT A VERY SLOW TEMPO
If you not ignore ignore this rule you will harm the whole process of developing your timing!

Here are three exercises to start with!

I'll be dropping by this for sure. Cheers Alex.
I'm always am in a hurry to play faster without really nailing it first at slow speeds. Guilty!

Alex
what about the picking direction? Can you elaborate. I guess the first exercise is strictly alternate picking then....?

Thanks
Carmine

Exactly what i need thank you Alex , you rock wink.gif

Hi Alex,
first of all, nice to meet you. Thank you for this corner which is so important. It's really exciting to work with you this way. If you agree, I wish to submit you a recording of this first step at 120bpm. The third part was really tough, and I hate triplet 4th (is that the right name for the last measure ?).
I've learned it by reading, so I hope I didn't misunderstand any part of it. I join also an image of your work for those who wouldn't have GuitarPro or TuxGuitar and who, as I do, don't understand anything to ASCII tabs smile.gif
Best regards.

I would suggest alternative picking for all the exercises

Sounds good! Just practice at a slow tempo and you will sound great in no time!

Hey guys! I have decided to post a new exercise a little earlier!
So here is the track
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/rhythm
Tempo is 90 BPM
So what I want you to do is to listen drums very carefully and play on every snare hit!
This exercise will help you develop your timing and you will learn how to play together with drums!
For now play on snare only and nothing else!
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

Alex,
what about where there are rests?. Just skip the note but keep to move my hand up and down? And the triplet, just follow the up down motion?

Thanks
Carmine

this is what i could do with the drum only backing track. Wait for your comments.

Hey Carmine,
nice attempt here. But I think you didn't answer the right question wink.gif You play on the snares AND the kicks.
I'll try to give it a go later myself.
Cheers.

Good job! The only thing you play on kick and snare this will be later for now concentrate on snare only!
About your take you are not really locked with the groove try to really focus when you are playing and make yourself play lay back!
And for now do only snare!

Carmine

Hi!
Kick is a big drum that is on the floor (Low pitch) and snare right by the drummer (hight pitch)
Usually kick is coming on one and snare on two
So if we will count
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
Kick Snare Kick Snare Snare

So I want you to count and play on the snare
GrindGuer got it right so you can refer to his take to get an idea as well!

Let me know, please.
Were you playing something similar in your lesson: Funk Rhythms?

Thanks in advance

Good job!!! You got it!
Some hits were a little bit off but nothing major!
I did similar idea in Funk rhythms!
My advice would be to practice it every day a few times trough you will see the difference in your timing in a week!
Just try to concentrate, focus on the beat and hold yourself back and you will do great!!
As I was saying before everybody has their own inner groove you are walking, talking, breathing and even blinking at your own tempo we just have to connect with your playing!

Alex
how do you get the "classical" funky tone, a' la Nile Rodgers? Should be a single coil guitar, but what about amp and effects?

Thanks in advance

Ideally you need a single coil but it's not necessary
There is not that much! smile.gif You can use a fender amp or simulation in POD Farm add maybe a little bit of chorus and wah if needed and you good to go!

My pleasure! I am happy to meet you and I am glad you have decided to join my rhythm corner!
You did a very good job!
The first exercise was perfect
When you got to the second and the third one you started to rush on triples
try to practice triplets only for a while and really concentrate on the groove it will help!
If you have to do it even slower and you will get it!

Thanks Alex for your comments. I've continued working on this. here is what I'm able to do right now. is it any better ?
Cheers.

Still using the same track (Drums only)
The chord I am using is E7#9

I did a short video to give you an idea

Please let me know if you have any questions!

So this is the one I did by mistake the last time? Should play better by now, hopefully happy.gif
Thanks for posting the video.

Can you move this thread to the "Pinned" one, please?

Hey Alex,
is it correct to say you play the E bass over the kick and the full chord over the snare ?
I'm on it smile.gif
PS : you did not comment my last attempt on the first assignment. Is it that bad ? huh.gif

You did a very good job! The third phrase is a little off and for some reason I hear two guitars?

Posted by: GrindGuer Apr 16 2012, 09:21 PM

Hey Alex,
you're right, there are two guitars. I thought that with two guitars, I would know if my timing was good. It seems not sad.gif

I've worked on your third task. It's harder that I thought, but it' really fun. I hope I understood well what you were waiting for. Tell me what you think. smile.gif

Sounds good! On the second strum you are rushing sometimes but it's almost there! I also will suggest to turn off overdrive and go clean, because you will have more control over your sound!
I will post a new task tomorrow and looking forward to hear your next take!

You are almost there! Try to listen to what I played carefully and you will notice the difference!
Also you are rushing a little bit. What you can do is concentrate on the drums while you are playing and force yourself to play behind!
Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions!

Very nice take! You are playing too much ahead and rushing! What I would suggest is to try to concentrate on the drums and really force yourself to play behind! It will feel like it's too much, but try to record yourself and you will hear the difference!
The thing about rhythm is you have to understand the groove and feel it than you have a full control over it and can do anything you want!

You did everything correctly I just want you to learn how to feel the groove try to do that:
Really listen to the drums and try to hear exactly what he is playing, after that start playing the exercise I gave you and really focus on your rhythm! Every take you do record yourself! I will give another exercise on Wednesday it will be really simple and it might be easier for you to start with! Also try to learn my Funk Rhythms lesson it will help you a lot as well!

Thanks.

Idea of this exercises is for you to also analyze rhythm guitar and learn how to hear the strums!

Hi guys! I have a new assignment! This one is a very good exercise! I have two tracks with my guitar and click only!
The second track has two bars with the click and two without! The trick is to keep the tempo even when click is gone!
This exercise will require a lot of concentration and some work! But it will improve your timing very fast!!!
Tempo is 80BPM
The chord is still E7#9

It is a very tricky exercise! You are rushing a little bit try to focus on the click more and really saddle with the beat!
Right now you are ahead of the beat try to hold yourself back you can even overdue it a little bit and pull too much, but I want you to hear and feel the difference between rushing and pulling back!
Let me know if you need any help!

Once i've post my take could you tell me if a play too behind the beat? i tend to play behind the beat and this its a thing I would like to correct. Thanks!

I have a new challenge for you guys! It will be a series of 3 exercises posted once a week every other exercise will be a little more complicated! To practice this exercises you can use any song you want or any chord progression!
Ex. 1
1) find the tempo of a song you want to practice.
2)slow down the tempo to half of what it is normally (half time). For example, if your tempo is at 120 BPM (beats per minute), slow it down to 60 BPM. But while doing this, keep your “internal clock” beating at 120 BPM, but then make the clicks of the metronome at 60 BPM be beats 1 & 3 of the measure.
What you are essentially doing is removing beats 2 & 4 from the count of 120 BPM. So it’ll be up to you and your internal clock to keep in time with the beats you don’t hear.
This is a very simple and helpful exercise! It is also beginners friendly!!!
Let me know if you need help or have any questions!

Posted by: Alex Feather May 17 2012, 05:33 PM

Hi guys I have a new exercise!
Exercise #2

This is practically the same principle behind exercise #1, but instead of removing beats 2 & 4, remove beats 1 & 3 instead. So really you’ll only be hearing beats 2 & 4. I think you’ll find this one much more challenging.
Always use a metronome when you are practicing those exercises!!!
Please let me know if you have any questions!

Posted by: Alex Feather May 26 2012, 09:40 AM

Exercise #3

Here is the last basic exercise! Next week I will start giving more complex tasks, so make sure to do those simple exercises first to get into routine!
We’re going to take it a step further here. Let’s set the count of our metronome to 120 BPM and then cut that in half to 60 BPM (like the above examples). But then, let’s take it even further, and cut 60 BPM in half to 30 BPM (you’re metronome might not go that low!). This will only provide us with the first beat of the measure. It’s then up to you and your internal clock to stay on time with the other “beats” you don’t hear!

Posted by: Alex Feather Jun 9 2012, 06:42 PM

New exercise is ready! This is a single note exercise it will help you to control your hands and will make your timing improve much faster! Just practice it for a few days and you will see a big difference!
Here is the drum track
