Teaching Kids. Options

I've been asked to give guitar lessons to an 8 year old boy with no experience of playing. I've been giving lessons to a couple of guys now for about a year but they all knew a few chords and how to play to an extent. But I'm wondering how to begin with him, do I try and teach him a few easy open chords maybe a simple little tune or just work on his handling of the instrument? How have you guys approached teaching youngsters Just realised there's a similar post on so sorry if it seems i'm asking the same thing. Advise would still be appreciated though

Mate, kids love stuff which allows them to receive fast and interesting results pick up kids favorites and before starting, ask him/ her what his favorite song is and what he would like to learn how to play.

Go for the easy stuff and always have a final result and never make him feel like he is having to attend a lesson that's the tricky part with kiddies, at least from what I am used to - they DO NOT like to know they are having 'A LESSON'

Make it fun, interactive and worth his attention and there you have it hope this helps

I had some kids as students and my experience is that the way to go with them is to teach them to play the things that they like to hear... maybe cartoon tunes, or any other thing that allow them to play something that they like in a short period of time. That's the only way to make them connect with the instrument and keep on playing. They will only understand the purpose of exercises and theory when they need it to play a more difficult tune but that they also love.

Indeed. These guys tell the truth. When I started playing piano, my first lesson consisted of learning a few things of the piano and how to properly play with my fingers. However, I started playing a few simple songs right away. I was eight years old at this time.

Thanks for the advise guys. He's oming over on Tuesday so I think I'll just try a couple of easy nursery rhymes first to get him used to fretting and ask him what tunes he likes and take it from there. Hopefully within a few weeks we can start on the extreme metal stuff

Try some easy songs, it will be fine! Don't force him anything, and always, always let him concentrate on only one thing at a time. Wait for him to finish playing, and let him raise his head in desire to have some more. I always wait for that "what's next" look

GREAT advice from Cosmin here! Finding out what song/songs the student likes and want's to learn gives them a place to start from and you a place to teach from. And it will help keep the student motivated. Hopefully it's something with power chords!
