Hey guys. Wondering if any of you more knowledgeable and experienced players can help me out with this. I'm trying to analyze the solo from Metallica's Master of Puppets, and I can't figure out what scale is being used for it. Looks to me like it's some sort of a mix between a minor scale and a blues scale. Am I on the right track? I've attached a screenshots of the tabs for the solo.
BTW, Ouch! Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=546KjKMB9kw ![]()

Looks mainly E minor- i see some 7# there too making those parts E harmonic minor (for a little bit of added flavour i guess)
edit: yeh that video is hilarious i have it favourited lmao i should probably explain - the note that makes it hamonic minor would be where the D# appears, it may seem like it doesnt sound quite right with the rest of it. A normal E minor scale would have a natural D (minor 7th). SO if both appear (didnt scan thoroughly) then Kirk is swapping and using both. yep Em Pentatonic
the majority of Metallica's earlier solos were done with the pentatonic scale. Same goes with a lot of similar bands from that time period. Because of the small number of notes in the scale, a lot of his solos sound the same, but they rock if you ask me... he's my biggest influence by far |
