huh.gif I'm sure the majority of people reading this post have seen footage of Marty playing....and you have probably noticed that his picking hand is bent up towards his body when he plays, like it's wrapped around the bridge or something....resulting in a picking motion somewhat similar to the Italian "whattsamatta you" hand gesture....my question is, does anyone have any insight into the pros/cons of his peculiar picking style? Any idea how it developed? I suppose it's most likely just an idiosyncracy with no real import...simply the way he felt comfortable playing...but I LOVE his style and sound, and if any of it is a result of this picking style or is facilitated in some way by this picking style, then I'd like to at least be familiar with it....any input would be appreciated. Thanks y'all.

As an afterthought....I haven't really tried his stuff yet, but does he incorporate a lot of harmonic minor and diminished scales / arpeggios into his lead work? I know he likes using whatever scales he can get his hands on from whatever corner of the world he can find them in, but it seems like I'm hearing a great deal of those two in the majority of his playing.

Thanks again

That's pretty much what the majority of the technique questions boil down to, I guess....was just curious bc I've never seen anyone else play like that, it seems tremendously awkward.

And yeah, I had the same experience when I tried it.

Well you get a different sound out of it, because the pick is at a different angle and you're picking on a different part of the string. I use it sometimes because it gives me a smoother, rounder sound.

I'm quite heavily influenced by Marty, a lot of the licks that I try to develop end up sounding very Friedman(ish). I'd suggest that a lot of his style comes from the notes that he uses, and about 6 or 7 core "techniques". He tends to favour up picking in his playing, it certainly isn't conventional. But it isn't necessary to copy his picking hand, to get a similar sound. I think he just chose a way that was comfortable for him, and has practiced it to such an extent that it's effortless. I'd suggest that if you choose a picking style that's comfortable, and just stick with it, after massive amounts of practice, you'll be able to play anything you want.
