I am learning a song, that has three strings appearing like this:
------6-----5----8-- ---------------------- ------3-----2----5-- It isn't hybrid picking either...just fast power chords. If the middle string is muted, it would have an X on it. What's the story here? -------------------- Ben

And if it was played open it should say -0-
You can always pick one string with your ring finger if you don't care to mute the string in between. I'd rather find "my" way to play something than trust tabs which too often are incorrect anyway. Though some things are impossible to find out, I know -------------------- My bands homepage

Easier to tab than putting an X there. I never ever bother putting X's in places where they don't play a vital part to the way the music sounds. Choose however way to play those notes that you find working. If its muting the string between or hybrid picking it is up to you (and as you said, they aren't hybrid picked. So there's one option left)
Those who tab are also often lazy, don't go deep into details, or trust, on tabs you don't pay for (like GMC tabs) This post has been edited by Sollesnes: Apr 28 2011, 02:25 PM |

A lot of jazz - particularly early George Benson, Charlie Christian and Tal Farlow - involves double notes on non-adjacent strings. You can either finger pick it or use a combination of pick and one finger. The non-fretted string in a doble note - assuming that this is the case here - isn´t meant to be played, muted or open.

Just place your index finger to upper string, and your pinky to lower. Since it didn't show what to do with the middle string you can either play it open or you can mute it with your side of the index finger while fretting the upper string

Octave based power chord. Bands like Godsmack use them all the time.
Take a look at this lesson from Gabe, it may help you get a hold on it. http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/godsmack-style-lesson/ -------------------- |

Yeah, I've heard it called split chords. As some have said, you mute out the middle note. Yes, it is clearer if you place the X on the middle string so the person knows what you are playing.

You can use hybrid picking there, or you can just mute the string. It won't make a terrible difference if the muted string is being heard, specially on hi-gain settings.
