I am really impressed with your singing! Love your voice and style! To start I need to understand a little bit more about your theory knowledge that's why I cam up with this little test for you smile.gif
1) Build F major triad
2) Build a D major scale
3) A - B - C - D - E - F# - G What mode is that?
4) How many sharps in E major scale?
Don't worry if you can't answer on some I am just trying to figure out where to start!
Happy to have you on board!

Ok cool! So let's start with a simple assignment that will help you develop your picking technique and will get your hands in sync!
I would like you to add it to your warm up routine! The trick is slower you will practice it better results you will get! Always practice it using a metronome!
Here is the tab:

Ha-ha!! Game on smile.gif

I am crap at sight reading tab and extracting rhythm - my piano teacher beat staff notation into me as a kid so that's the only thing I can sight-read rhythm from... So anyway, I read your reply and thought, yeah I can do this easily. Ha!

Then I opened up the .GP5 file and hit the semi-quaver section at the end - "Holy-Turn-Down-The-Tempo-Batman!!!" Loving it wink.gif

I'm down at 50bpm at the moment and slowly crawling upwards while concentrating on technique.

One question about technique- where I'm playing runs over a five fret range and hitting the 1st, 3rd and 5th frets in that span, should I be putting the extra stretch in between the index and middle fingers or the ring and pinky? (...and as an aside, are they still called P.I.M.A. fingers on your fretting hand??). Is there a "correct" approach to that fingering or should I just go with what feels natural?

Cheers!

Z.

I am glad you like this exercise! It will help you a lot and very fast! I always suggest to do how it is comfortable for you if it feels right to use different fingers just go for it, if you will decide to use pinky and make it stronger you can do it as well!
This exercise is meant to connect your left and right hands together
the reason it's hard to play fast is in your left hand being out of sync with the right! As soon as you will get them together you will see a huge results!
Let me know if you need help or have questions!

60bpm is reasonably consistent now. Having some occassional wanders up to 80 and the odd flirt with 90. Will post a take when I've got it closer to nailed.

Cheers -

OK - this is now officially doing my head in!

I am now pretty consistent at 80 bpm, but anything faster rapidly turns into slop. I'm also finding that when I'm running from the high E string and going to the G string, (like in the start of the last phrase), I am catching the B string just slightly. Not sure what to do about this...

Still going hard at it in practise. Will post an update shortly.

B.

I can suggest to practice this part at a very slow tempo and you will get it! Just loop it and play it say 100 times without any mistakes and it will sound perfect very fast smile.gif
I am looking forward to hear your take let me know how it goes and if I can help you with the B string issue!

Okey-dokey - this is as close as I can get at the moment. Coming along - just slowly. Will post a video take once I get over red-light fever from the webcam and it's a little more polished.

http://soundcloud.com/qwerty_zoot/ex-1-90bpm

You can hear the B-string catch in this - think it's just a matter of practice as you said.

Ciao,

Z.

It sounds like your timing is good, but it's hard to tell because there is no click to refer to, If you don't mind adding it for your next take!
You did a very good job learning it and it sounds great! I just would like to be sure that it is 100% correct! smile.gif

Hi Alex -

Here's another video - this time @ 90bpm. Still sloppy, but indicative of where I'm at - couple of examples of the string catching thing I've been getting caught with.

Let me know if anything looks weird.

Cheers!

...and I've been meaning to ask you recommendation on the following points for a while now -

1. For the sake of my marriage, give me something else to practice! wink.gif
2. I normally have 1 - 2 hours per day to play. What's your recommendation on how I should spend my practice time?

Cheers!

So I have a new assignment for you!
Here is the backing track that you can use to practice your assignments!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/blues-mentoring
It's a standard I - IV - V blues progression in E
So the chords are: E7 - A7 - B7
I would like you to jam over it and get use to the feel and the groove!
For now I would like you to use E minor pentatonic in this position:

Ha-ha! Love it! Nice track Alex - hard not to feel the groove in that one. I've set up a 30 min loop in my sequencer and have been jamming around this. First time it ended I thought something had broken - couldn't believe that 30mins had already gone past.

Fun!!
