I felt like this when i got my pod and you just need to keep making tones and eventially you'll have a decent idea of what to do. Also try reading bits of the manual cos they can be useful.
Congratulations on your new device mate.
With these kind of devices it is best to read the manual nicely. Do some light reading in the evenings, and try to apply the stuff tomorrow. Also take your time with the manual, it's not like you have to read it all at once.
You use effects like you would use them in normal situations. Try to see what effects are being used in the music that you like, then try to find similar presets with your device. Factory settings are quite often too "wet". It means that they purposely put heavier effects to "advertise" the possibilities of the device. Your device should have the ability to store patches that you create. Once you find effect that you thing sounds nice, you store it. As you start to make presets, you will generally tend to make more wet presets, but later on you will tend to make your presets sound a bit dryer and more transparent. In other words, lots of effects usually muddy the signal, so a simple setup usually sounds great. This is not a rule, just a tip or a guideline. There are of course some types of music where a nice thick effect is welcomed, so experiment and see what you can come up with.
Also bare in mind that on high volumes, effects tend to change sound, specially with those kind of units. It is highly likely that a patch stored at home will sound not that good in studio when playing loud - most of the time, you will have to cut down the effect a bit, but as I said before, it is up to you to make presets, and see what you like.
