Well folks, as you may know I recently bought an 8 String ESP LTD guitar. With Dual 808 Active EMG's with the Second Battery Mod! KARUNCH! smile.gif

So I tried all my FAV amp/cab/fx emulations on it and it was just HORRIBLE. I was dejected. All my presets, just sounded....well, they sounded terrible. I was about to give up when it finally hit me. I used to have to play through a Bass Amp Combo with my 7 String to get anything deep and chunky enough to make my hair stand on end. So After not touching my amp forever, I pulled out my cabs/amp/etc. and BINGO! HUGE KRUNCHY CHUNKY THICK TONE OF DEATH! Now I have to mic this thing up to try to capture some tone. Here are a couple of pics in the mean time.

That's awesome man! How about modifying your presets a little? Surely you can use your emulations as well. Can't wait to hear what you got to show us!

I've tried modding and even adding bass cabs in software and such and none of it sounds like I"m wanting sadly sad.gif But the good news is, I pulled out my 15 inch driver bass combo and hooked my gnx3 up (cranked the skreamer emulation on board the pedal) and it sounds pretty freaking sick smile.gif Tried it through two regular guitar cabinets and neither one did it justice.

There is an old Death Metal trick of running one of your cabinets as a 15 or 18 inch driver just mounted in guitar cab, or using an actual bass cab under your regular cab. Then of course you have to mic it partially as you would a bass guitar cabinet with a mic that has extended low range. The standard Sure SM 57 sounds great for guitar but makes a poor bass mic typically and I had the same experience on the 8 string.

I have found that a nice condenser mic with a large diaphragm does a very good job! But you have to keep the volume pretty low!

Todd

You shouldn't really have that much trouble setting up a solid tone with an 8. Nor should you need a bass cab, in fact most players I know that specifically use 8's think its harsh for the tone. I'd say though that since you are dealing with an 8 you are reaching into the bass territory, but you don't want it to be as bassy as one, in a recording, any low end you receive from the bass cab would be cut anyway (mostly). And, these guitars aren't meant for great chordal clarity with that low F (in most circumstances thats what I think). That low string is really meant to stand on its own, like Meshuggah. So maybe focus on that aspect a little.

Also, 8's are almost entirely aimed at Metal players, and there are TONS of equipment such as cabs, heads, pedals, that are designed for balancing the range of an 8, I'd check in on the forums at Sevenstring.org, you wont find a bigger group of 8 string players than there and some of them have a good amount of experience.

It is smile.gif It's got the "Dual Battery Mod" so there are actually 2, 9 volt batteries powering the EMG's. Just a MONSTER!

You don't "need" a bass cab really, IMHO it just sounds a bit better. Guitar speakers are simply not designed for that low a register. They can sorta handle it, but larger drivers just seem to handle it a tad better. Too each his own though, the folks you know that play 8's probably have found whatever works for them which is great smile.gif

I understand your reaction though, I though similarly before trying this 8, through my 15inch bass combo. But having tried it, and compared it personally against two other guitar cabs, I can tell you from experience that the combo just sounds better and even though it seems like it wouldn't it does. smile.gif

You nailed it on chordal clarity though! Very little of that on the low string, it's most for counterpoint/djent/chunk chunk etc. So yeah thats what I"m focused on. smile.gif And yup, there are cabs/mods and such that Metal guys use for 8s. As I mentioned, an old trick is to just one one bass cab, and one regular cab, or (as in my case) as bass combo amp instead of a guitar combo. There are a thousand ways to any give rig of course depending on whatever. But I'm glad I kept my bass combo from when I got my 7, it's certainly come in handy with my 8.

If you have not tried an 8, get one and give it a shot. It's quite an experience.

Played one for awhile, fun but I can't write music that makes use of an 8th string, so its useless to me sad.gif

I personally think if you are seriously going to start delving into 8 string playing, look up making custom speaker encasements, I've heard some amazing results with simple construction.

OR....

You could get a Diezel Mark V....Only like $4,000 laugh.gif

Excellent use of deductive reasoning! And I love the photo angle of that first pic. smile.gif It looks like a production advertising pic to emphasize the 8 tuners.

I'm using a custom speaker encasment smile.gif Well, not really custom. Just a 15inch bass combo. But personally, I love it. I"ll record some stuff and post it.

Wow good luck taming that monster! wink.gif

I have always been a bit curious about a 7 string, since several bands I listen to, like Periphery, are pretty attached to their 7 strings.. Also Ola E on Youtube uses one, and he is awesome wink.gif

But an 8? I would consider that a full workout whenever you wanna play that haha laugh.gif

Well said smile.gif it's a big workout each time I pick it up. Trying to do pinch harmonics on the 7th and 8th string will put serious stress on your hands and pick. I've actually cracked a clayton 1.5 pick in half on this monster. I've never seen that before.
